Genesis 35:2

Look at what's happening here: Jacob just heard from God — "Get up, go to Bethel" ( Genesis 35:1) — and the very first thing he does is turn to his own household and issue an order. Not "let's go" but "get rid of the foreign gods." That's telling. Jacob has apparently known for a while that his camp wasn't clean. Ten years earlier, when he fled Laban, Rachel stole her father's household idols and hid them under a camel saddle ( Genesis 31:34) — and as far as the text tells us, nobody ever dealt with that. Add to that the recent violence at Shechem, where Jacob's sons slaughtered a city and hauled off its plunder ( Genesis 34), and you've got a household stuffed with pagan trinkets, stolen jewelry, and blood on people's hands.

So Jacob gives three commands: get rid of the foreign gods, purify yourselves, and change your clothes. These aren't three unrelated chores — they're one act of house-cleaning moving from the inside out: first the idols go (the actual objects of false worship), then the body is washed (removing the residue of violence and impurity), then the clothing is changed (a visible, physical marker that something has changed). Notice Jacob doesn't say "believe differently." He says "throw the things away." Sometimes obedience starts with your hands before it reaches your heart Tyndale.

Where Christians have wrestled with this: is Jacob only now enforcing what he should have insisted on years ago, tolerating idolatry in his own house out of weakness or convenience toward his wives? Several older commentators think so, contrasting him unfavorably with Abraham, of whom God said he would command his household to keep the Lord's way ( Genesis 18:19) Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. This moment sits right before Jacob returns to Bethel to finally pay the vow he made twenty years earlier as a frightened young man running from his brother ( Genesis 28:20-22) — a vow long overdue.

Genesis was shaped over a long history, but the patriarchal stories — Abraham, Isaac, Jacob — describe events traditionally placed somewhere around 2000-1800 BC, long before Israel existed as a nation, before the law of Moses, before a temple. Jacob is a wandering herdsman with two wives, two concubines, twelve sons, and a large household of servants, moving through the land of Canaan (roughly modern Israel/Palestine) with flocks and tents rather than settling in cities.

Picture his household at this moment: not a tidy nuclear family, but an entire traveling clan — his wives Leah and Rachel, their maidservants Bilhah and Zilpah, his children, hired shepherds, and servants picked up along the way, many of them Syrians from his years working for his father-in-law Laban in Mesopotamia (modern-day northern Iraq/Syria) Adam Clarke. That region was thick with household idols — small figurines believed to protect a family, guarantee fertility, or guard property. Rachel had grown up in that world and had stolen her father's idols on the way out ( Genesis 31:19, 34).

Then, just one chapter earlier, disaster: Jacob's sons Simeon and Levi massacred the men of the Canaanite city of Shechem in revenge for the rape of their sister Dinah, then the rest of the brothers looted the city — livestock, wealth, women, and children ( Genesis 34:25-29). So by the time we reach chapter 35, Jacob's camp is carrying two kinds of contamination: foreign idols brought from Mesopotamia and probably looted from Shechem's temple as well John Gill, and the literal blood and plunder of a massacre. Jacob has been living in this land for roughly ten years without going back to Bethel to finish what he started there as a young man fleeing for his life. God's command to go up to Bethel (35:1) forces the issue — you cannot stand before the God who met you at that place while dragging Laban's idols and Shechem's loot along with you.

The command Jacob gives is סוּר (çûwr, H5493) — "turn off, get rid of, remove" Strong's. It's a physical verb: get this stuff out of here, off your body, out of the camp. Not "reconsider" — remove.

What gets removed: אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר — "gods of the foreigner." נֵכָר (nêkâr, H5236) means foreign, or a foreigner, or heathendom in the abstract Strong's — the same root behind the idea of something alien, not belonging to the family of God's people. Interestingly, the word used for "gods" here is אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430) Strong's — the very same word used for the true God throughout Genesis 1. The text isn't shy about calling these fake gods "elohim" too — Hebrew doesn't have a separate vocabulary word for "counterfeit deity." It's the same title; what makes the difference is whether it belongs to the Lord or to foreigners.

Then two more commands: טָהֵר (ṭâhêr, H2891), "to be pure" — originally meaning to be bright or clear, used both for physical cleanness and moral/ceremonial holiness Strong's. And חָלַף (châlaph, H2498), "to change, pass on, slide by" — here, change your שִׂמְלָה (simlâh, H8071), your outer garment or mantle Strong's. There's something almost liturgical in the sequence — remove the idols, become pure, put on new clothes — that echoes forward into Israel's later worship, where the people wash their clothes before meeting God at Mount Sinai ( Exodus 19:10,14). Jacob, without any law yet written, is already living out this same instinct: you don't walk into God's presence carrying yesterday's dirt.

This verse is a small, dusty preview of a pattern that runs the whole length of the Bible and lands, finally, in Jesus: you cannot come near a holy God carrying your idols and your filth with you — something has to be put off, and something has to be put on.

Jacob tells his household to bury the foreign gods and change garments before they go up to Bethel, the "house of God," to meet the Lord. Centuries later God tells Israel to wash their clothes before he descends on Mount Sinai ( Exodus 19:10). Centuries after that, the prophet Ezekiel promises a day when God himself will do the cleansing — "I will sprinkle clean water on you... I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols" ( Ezekiel 36:25) — because by then it was obvious that people can't reliably clean themselves up on command. Jacob's household could bury the physical idols under a tree at Shechem, but idolatry of the heart doesn't stay buried that easily.

That's exactly the gap Jesus fills. He is the one through whom God finally does what Ezekiel promised — not just telling us to change our garments, but clothing us himself. Paul will later say believers "have clothed yourselves with Christ" ( Galatians 3:27), and the writer of Hebrews describes believers drawing near to God with hearts "sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience" and bodies washed with pure water ( Hebrews 10:22) — language that deliberately echoes this whole world of ritual washing and changed clothes. Where Jacob commanded his household to purify themselves before meeting God, Jesus makes the purifying himself, at the cross, so that people who could never fully "put away" their own idols could be made clean from the inside. Jacob's Bethel was a place he had to earn his way back to with obedience; the cross is the place where God comes to us in our idolatry and does the burying for us.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what's buried under your tent right now that you've been carrying around for ten years, hoping nobody notices?

Jacob's household wasn't full of strangers to God — these were his own family, his own servants, people who had watched him wrestle with an angel and walk away limping ( Genesis 32:24-31). And yet idols had been quietly riding along in the luggage the whole time. That's usually how it works. Nobody sets out to worship something else. It just gets carried along — a habit, a comfort, a fear, a relationship, a way of numbing yourself — until one day God says "get up, go to Bethel," and you realize you can't walk into his presence with your hands full of both.

Notice Jacob didn't wait for a feeling of readiness. He gave an order. He said get rid of it, get clean, change your clothes — today, before we go. That's the part that costs something. Repentance in the Bible is rarely a mood; it's usually a decision followed by an action you can see — an idol physically taken off, buried, thrown out, given away. What is it for you? Not necessarily a statue — maybe it's the way you use money, the person you keep going back to for the comfort only God should give, the resentment you've been quietly worshipping instead of forgiving.

The good news buried in this hard command is that Jacob's household did it, and then God met them — protecting them, blessing them, renaming Jacob at Bethel. Obedience that costs you something real is never obedience into nothing. It's obedience toward a God who is actually there, waiting at the top of the road.

• Lord, show me what I've been quietly carrying that doesn't belong in a life devoted to you — even things I've stopped noticing because they've been with me so long.
• Give me Jacob's courage to name it out loud to the people around me, not just privately in my own head.
• Purify me — not just my actions, but the parts of my heart that have made peace with a rival to you.
• Thank you that you don't just command me to be clean, but in Christ you actually make me clean.
• Help me take one concrete, visible step of obedience this week, not just a feeling of conviction that fades by tomorrow.

• Jacob tolerated this in his family for years before finally acting — what have you been tolerating in yourself, hoping it would quietly disappear on its own?
• What would it cost you, specifically, to "bury" the thing God is naming right now — not just resolve to ignore it, but actually get rid of it?
• Do you tend to treat obedience as a feeling you wait for, or a decision you make and then act on, the way Jacob did?
