Genesis 1:1

Look at how the Bible opens. No argument for God's existence, no warm-up, no defense — just a flat, world-tilting announcement: God was already there, and everything else got its start from him. The very first thing Scripture tells you is that you are not the center; God is, and you are made.

"In the beginning" means exactly that — the starting line, before which there was nothing but God. Time itself begins here. The Hebrew word for "created" is one the Old Testament reserves for God alone; no human ever does this kind of making Tyndale. We rearrange things that already exist; God brings the things into being.

Here's what's easy to miss. This isn't a chapter title floating above the action — the careful Hebrew shows verse 1 is itself the first act, the foundation the rest of the chapter is built on Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. And notice the polite war it's waging: Israel's neighbors said the world was born from gods fighting, or that the sun and stars were gods. Genesis quietly demotes all of it. The sun is just a lamp God hangs up later. There's one God, and he made the rest.

Christians divide over how — whether these are six 24-hour days, long ages, or a literary frame. That argument is real, but it isn't the point of verse 1. The point is who and that: the one true God, and he made it all. Don't let the fight over the clock make you miss the announcement.

Picture the people who first heard these words. By long tradition, Moses gave Israel these opening lines, and whoever you credit, the audience is a people freshly hauled out of slavery in Egypt — or their children wandering the wilderness, somewhere in the second millennium BC, with Egypt behind them and Canaan ahead.

That matters, because both places were swimming in gods. Egypt worshiped the sun as the god Ra; the Nile, the sky, the frogs, the cattle — all sacred, all divine. Up ahead in Canaan, the locals told stories where the world got made when storm-gods butchered sea-monsters and built the sky out of the carcass. Creation, in those stories, was an accident of divine violence.

Now hear Genesis 1:1 land in that world. No fight. No carcass. One God, calmly, deliberately, making everything. The sun the Egyptians bowed to? Just a thing God made — he doesn't even name it until day four. This opening verse is a quiet act of liberation: the God who broke Egypt's chains is bigger than Egypt's gods, because he made the stuff their gods were made of Tyndale.

It also steadies a frightened people. They'd just watched the most powerful empire on earth, and they were about to face fortified cities. Is the God who made all this also good? The chapter answers — six times it stops to say "it was good," like a refrain meant to be felt, not just known. The Maker is good, and he's on their side. That's not abstract theology to a former slave staring down a giant; that's the ground under your feet.

Four words carry the weight here.

רֵאשִׁית (rêʼshîyth, H7225) — "beginning," but richer than a stopwatch starting. It's the word for first in rank, even firstfruit — the first and best of a harvest Strong's. So this isn't just "once upon a time"; it's the headwaters, the source everything flows from.

אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430) — "God." Here's a wonderful puzzle: the word is grammatically plural, but the verb tied to it is singular Strong's. Not many gods — one God, so full and great the language strains to hold him. Plain Hebrew majesty.

בָּרָא (bârâʼ, H1254) — "created." In the whole Old Testament, God is always the one doing this verb Strong's. You and I shape, build, cook, carve. Only God bara's. It's a making no creature can copy.

אֵת (ʼêth, H853) — a tiny word you can't even translate; it just points at the thing being made, like a finger underlining "the heavens and the earth" so you don't miss them as the real, solid object of God's work Strong's.

שָׁמַיִם (shâmayim, H8064) and אֶרֶץ (ʼerets, H776) — "heavens" and "earth," the lofty arch above and the firm ground below: a pair meaning the whole of it.

Don't read this verse as if Jesus only shows up later, in Bethlehem. He's here in the first line.

John opens his Gospel deliberately echoing this verse — "In the beginning was the Word... all things were made through him" ( John 1:1-3). John wants you to hear Genesis 1:1 humming under his words. When God spoke the world into being — "And God said, let there be" — that speaking Word was the Son. Paul says it flat out: "by him all things were created... and in him all things hold together" ( Colossians 1:16-17). The hands that made the galaxies are the same hands that would one day be nailed to a beam.

Hebrews picks up the same note, taking an old psalm about the Creator and addressing it straight to Jesus: "In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations of the earth" ( Hebrews 1:10). The carpenter from Nazareth laid the earth's foundations.

Here's the wonder that should stop you. The God who needed nothing — who was perfectly happy and full before there was a single atom — chose to make a world, and then, when that world rebelled and broke, chose to step into it as one of us to buy it back. The same verb that says he created points forward to a new creation he's making through the cross ( Isaiah 65:17; 2 Corinthians 5:17). The Maker became the Mender. The one who said "let there be light" is the Light that came into the dark. Genesis 1:1 is the first sentence of a love story that runs straight to an empty tomb.

Sit with the simplest fact this verse hands you: you are not the beginning. God was here first. You are made, not maker. That sounds obvious until you notice how much of your daily anxiety comes from forgetting it — from living as if the universe runs on your effort, your control, your management of every outcome.

If God made the heavens and the earth out of nothing, then he is not stretched thin by your problem. He is not waiting on your resources. The God who spoke light into a void can speak into the dead places of your life. That's not a slogan; it's the logic of this verse. Whatever you're white-knuckling tonight, you're holding something the Creator made and has never lost track of.

But here's the cost. If he made it all, then it's all his — including you. Not part of you. Not the religious slice you've fenced off for Sundays. All of you, made by him, owed back to him. Creation isn't a neutral fact; it's a claim thegospelcoalition.org. The Maker has the right to the made. So the honest question this verse presses on you is: where are you living as though you own yourself? Your money, your body, your time, your future — are you stewarding gifts, or guarding possessions?

To take Genesis 1:1 seriously is to lay something down. Maybe a plan you've gripped too hard. Maybe the pride of self-made achievement. Maybe just the exhausting fiction that it all depends on you. The first verse of the Bible invites you to exhale, kneel, and let the Maker be God — which, it turns out, is the only place a made thing was ever meant to rest.

• Father, before I existed, You were. Teach me to live as someone made, not as someone who has to hold the world together myself.
• You made everything out of nothing — so speak into the empty, dead places in my life that I've given up on.
• Forgive me for the corners of my life I treat as my own. All of me is Yours by right; help me hand them back.
• You called Your creation "good" six times over — help me trust that the God who made me is also truly good, even when I'm afraid.
• Jesus, You were there in the beginning and You laid the earth's foundations; let me see You at the center of everything You've made.

• Where in my life am I living as if I'm the maker — the one who has to control every outcome? What would change if I really believed God was here first?
• If everything I have was created and given, not earned and owned, what am I gripping too tightly right now?
• The chapter says creation is "good." Do I actually believe the God behind the universe is good — or do I secretly suspect He's against me? Where did that suspicion come from?
• This verse demoted everything Israel's neighbors worshiped to the level of made things. What "made things" — money, status, security, a person — have I quietly let become god-sized in my life?
• If the same Word who made the stars came to save me, what does that tell me about how seriously God takes both His creation and me?
