Genesis 16:13

Look at what's happening here: a pregnant, runaway slave woman, alone in the desert, has just been found by an angel who tells her to go back to the mistress who mistreated her — and she responds not with despair but with worship. She names God. That's the plain surface. But sit with how strange that is: in the whole book of Genesis, Hagar is the first person, male or female, slave or free to give God a name Matthew Henry. Not Abraham. Not Sarah. An Egyptian slave girl nobody would have bothered to remember if the story hadn't insisted on it.

The name she gives is El Roi — "the God who sees me." And then she adds a second line that's genuinely hard to translate, which is why you'll find different English Bibles handling it differently: "Here I have seen the One who sees me" — or, as some older readings put it, "Have I even here seen him who sees me, and remained alive?" Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. That second reading matters because in the ancient world, and in the rest of the Bible, seeing God face to face was supposed to get you killed (compare Jacob's shock in Genesis 32:30, or Exodus 33:20). Hagar isn't just naming God's attentiveness — she's marveling that she looked straight at him and lived.

Easy to miss: this is a woman with zero standing — foreign, enslaved, used and then discarded by Abram and Sarai's household — and God finds her, in the wilderness, before he finds anyone else in this chapter. The narrative doesn't even bother to record God speaking directly to Sarai in this story. He speaks to Hagar. That placement in the larger story matters: Genesis 16 is the ugly detour where Abram and Sarai try to manufacture God's promise through Hagar's body instead of waiting on him, and it's Hagar — the collateral damage of their impatience — who gets the theophany. Commentators have long debated whether this "angel of the LORD" is a created messenger or God himself appearing in human form John Gill; the ancient Jewish Targums leaned toward reading it as the very Word of God speaking, which is worth knowing even though it's not something you need to resolve to feel the weight of the verse.

Genesis as we have it was shaped and passed down within Israel's story, traditionally associated with Moses (roughly the 1400s–1200s BC), though the events it narrates — the world of Abraham — reach back much earlier, somewhere around 2000–1800 BC. This is the world of tents, flocks, and clan alliances, long before Israel existed as a nation.

Hagar herself was Egyptian — likely acquired by Abram's household during their time in Egypt ( Genesis 12:16 hints at how such servants entered the family). In that world, a slave woman's body belonged, legally and practically, to her owners. When Sarai, unable to have children, gives Hagar to Abram to bear a son in her place ( Genesis 16:2-3), she's using a customary practice of the ancient Near East — surrogate motherhood through a servant was a recognized way to secure an heir when a wife was infertile. It wasn't scandalous by the standards of the culture; it was standard damage control. But once Hagar conceives, the power dynamics shift, tension boils over, and Sarai treats her harshly enough that Hagar flees into the wilderness — specifically toward Shur, on the road back toward Egypt, her homeland ( Genesis 16:7).

That desert road was genuinely dangerous — no cities, no protection, a pregnant fugitive slave with nowhere safe to land. She has no legal recourse, no family to shelter her, no god of her own she can appeal to for rescue (Egyptian religion offered her nothing here). It's in that exact spot — at a spring, a rare lifeline in the wasteland — that the text says "the angel of the LORD found her" ( Genesis 16:7). The well she names afterward, Beer-lahai-roi ("well of the Living One who sees me"), apparently kept its name for generations; the text notes it was still called that "to this day," a marker that this was a real, known location travelers passed by long after the events. Verses like this — where someone marks a place with a name commemorating what God did there — show up again and again in Genesis ( Genesis 22:14, Genesis 28:17, and later in Judges 6:24), a common ancient practice of naming a site to preserve a memory of divine encounter for anyone passing through Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

The name Hagar gives God centers on two small but loaded Hebrew words. First, אֵל (ʼêl, H410) — the basic word for "God" or "Mighty One," used across the ancient world for deity in general but here pointed straight at Israel's God. Second, רֳאִי (rŏʼîy, H7210) — "sight" or "seeing," built from the verb רָאָה (râʼâh, H7200), "to see" Strong's. Put together, El Roi means something like "the God who sees" or "the God of seeing" — not just a God with eyes, but a God whose seeing is active, personal, penetrating.

Notice too that the verb Hagar uses for what God did to her is דָבַר (dâbar, H1696) — "to speak" Strong's. This God isn't a silent force watching from a distance; he sees her and then he talks to her, by name, in the desert. That combination — seeing and speaking — is what makes this more than surveillance. It's relationship.

And the name of the LORD she invokes is the sacred name יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068), rooted in the idea of "the self-existent" or "the Eternal One" Strong's — the same covenant name God will later reveal to Moses at the burning bush. Hagar, an Egyptian slave with no covenant claim on this God, is nonetheless the one using his personal, intimate name here, generations before Israel even exists as a people.

The tricky word is אַחַר (ʼachar, H310), "after" or "the hind part" Strong's — the word buried in Hagar's second exclamation, "have I also seen... after him who sees me?" Its ambiguity is exactly why translators and commentators through the centuries have wrestled with the second half of the verse Adam Clarke.

Here's the quiet thread running from this desert well all the way to the New Testament: God keeps showing up for the people everyone else has written off, and he keeps letting himself be seen without destroying the one who sees him.

Hagar is astonished that she looked at God and lived — because seeing God was supposed to be lethal, a barrier no sinful human could cross and survive ( Exodus 33:20). That barrier is exactly what Jesus dismantles. John opens his Gospel by telling you plainly: "No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known" ( John 1:18). What Hagar got — a fleeting, overwhelming glimpse in the wilderness that she had to name just to hold onto — believers get permanently, fully, in a person. Jesus tells Philip, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" ( John 14:9). The God who sees has become, in Christ, the God who can be seen and touched and eaten with, without anyone being consumed.

There's also a pattern here worth naming honestly, not stretching too far: Hagar is a foreigner, a slave, a woman used and discarded by the covenant family — and yet God meets her personally, before he's even finished dealing with Abraham and Sarah's part of the story. That's the same shape you'll see over and over in Jesus's ministry: he stops for the Samaritan woman at another well ( John 4), for the woman caught in adultery, for the outcasts nobody else would name. Hagar's well isn't a direct prophecy of Christ, but it's an early, unmistakable rehearsal of exactly the kind of person Jesus goes looking for — the ones outside the promise who still get seen by the God who made it.

Here's the question this verse puts to you directly: do you actually believe God sees you — not in some abstract, "God is everywhere" way, but in the specific, humiliating, unglamorous mess you're standing in right now?

Hagar wasn't in a good spot when God found her. She wasn't praying a tidy prayer or having a good day. She was a pregnant runaway who'd been mistreated and had made her own mistakes too — the text doesn't pretend she's innocent ( Genesis 16:4-6). She was as far from anyone's spotlight as a person can get. And that's precisely where God shows up and names himself to her, not the other way around. She didn't find him. He found her.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty about where you actually are. It's easy to talk to God from your best angle — after you've cleaned up, after you've figured out how to explain yourself. Hagar talks to God from the desert, mid-flight, with nothing sorted out. If you're waiting to feel presentable before you believe God is looking at you with anything but disappointment, this verse says you've got it backwards. He sees you now, in whatever wilderness you're actually in, not the version of you that shows up on Sunday.

And there's a second cost, quieter but harder: after this encounter, Hagar goes back. The angel tells her to return to Sarai and submit to her ( Genesis 16:9) — a genuinely hard word, not a rescue that removes her from difficulty but one that gives her the strength to walk back into it, seen and named by God. Being seen by God doesn't always mean your circumstances change. Sometimes it means you can bear them because you're no longer invisible.

• Give me Hagar's honesty — help me talk to you from exactly where I am, not from the cleaned-up version I'd rather present.
• Where you're asking me to go back into a hard situation instead of escaping it, give me the strength that comes from knowing I'm seen and named by you.
• Thank you that in Jesus, the God who sees me let himself be seen and touched, so I could know you're not distant.
