Psalms 97:10

Look at how this verse is built: it's a command wrapped around a promise. "Hate evil, O you who love the LORD" — that's the command, and it's addressed to a very specific group: people who already love God. Then comes the promise: "He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked." Notice the logic isn't "hate evil so that God will protect you." It's more like: if you love the LORD, hating evil is simply what that love looks like on the ground — and meanwhile, God is already doing the protecting.

The easy thing to miss is how the verse pairs an inner disposition ("love," "hate" — real emotions, not just behaviors) with outer danger ("the hand of the wicked" — real enemies, real threat). This isn't abstract piety. The psalmist assumes that loving God and hating evil will put you in the crosshairs of people who don't love God and don't hate evil. That's why the promise of preservation and deliverance comes right on its heels — you need it.

This verse sits near the end of Psalm 97, a psalm celebrating God's kingship over the whole earth (verses 1-6 describe him arriving in storm and fire, verses 7-9 show idols and idol-worshippers put to shame). Where Christians have sometimes disagreed: does "hate evil" mean hating evil people, or only evil actions? Most careful readers land on the latter — you can hate what someone does and still be commanded elsewhere to love them — but the verse itself doesn't spell that out, so pastors have had to fill the gap with the rest of Scripture. Psalm 97 belongs to a cluster of psalms (93, 95-99) often called "enthronement psalms" because they all shout some version of "the LORD reigns." We don't know the exact author or date with certainty, but many scholars place these psalms either in the period of the Israelite monarchy, sung at festivals celebrating God as Israel's true King over against the kings of the nations, or later, reworked for use after the Babylonian exile — when Nebuchadnezzar's armies had crushed Jerusalem in 586 BC and dragged the survivors off to Babylon, leaving the nation wondering if God still ruled anything at all.

That second setting matters for verse 10 specifically. One well-respected reading points to the tension of the Maccabean period, several centuries later (around 167-160 BC), when Jewish believers who stayed loyal to God faced enormous pressure — social, economic, sometimes lethal — to blend in with the surrounding pagan culture, to "ogle" at foreign gods and easier ways of living. Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament Whether or not that's the exact original setting, the pattern repeats constantly in Israel's story: a small community of people who love the LORD, surrounded by a much larger culture that either doesn't care about him or actively hates those who do.

Picture the audience for this psalm: not comfortable people. People who knew that clinging to God's law while their neighbors worshipped Baal or bowed to Babylonian idols could cost them a job, a friendship, sometimes their life. The word "saints" here (we'll look at it closely in a moment) doesn't mean stained-glass figures — it means ordinary loyal people who'd chosen a side in a world where that choice had teeth. This verse was sung, not just read, by people who needed the reminder that their love for God and their hatred of evil weren't naive — God himself stood behind both.

The command runs on two verbs sitting right next to each other in Hebrew: אָהַב (ʼâhab, H157) — "to love, to have deep affection for" — and שָׂנֵא (sânêʼ, H8130) — "to hate, personally and strongly." Strong's These aren't polite preferences. Hebrew doesn't really do lukewarm; you love or you hate, and the psalmist is saying your love for God should generate a real, gut-level revulsion toward רַע (raʻ, H7451), evil — the same word used all through the Old Testament for moral wrongness, harm, and ruin.

Then the promise: God שָׁמַר (shâmar, H8104) — "guards, hedges about, protects" — the נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh, H5315) of his saints. Nephesh is a rich word — it's not just "soul" in the thin, disembodied sense English speakers often mean; it's your whole living, breathing self, your life. Strong's God isn't preserving some ghostly inner spark while your body takes the hit — he's guarding you, the whole person.

The word for "saints" is חָסִיד (châçîyd, H2623), from the same root as chesed — God's loyal, covenant love. A chasid is someone marked by that same quality: not sinless, but loyal, devoted, faithful to the relationship. Strong's Finally, God נָצַל (nâtsal, H5337) — "snatches away, rescues" — his people out of the יָד (yâd, H3027), the "hand," of the רָשָׁע (râshâʻ, H7563), the actively wicked person. "Hand" in Hebrew often pictures raw power and grip — God pries you loose from a grip that was closing on you.

Psalm 97 opens by declaring "the LORD reigns" — and the whole psalm builds a picture of a King coming in fire and glory to judge and to save. The New Testament doesn't let you read that as merely poetic. It points straight at Jesus, who reigns now and will come again in exactly this kind of unveiled glory (see Matthew 25:31, Revelation 19:11-16). So when this psalm turns, in verse 10, to tell the King's loyal subjects how to live under him — hate evil, love him — it's describing life under Christ's own reign before his name was even given.

But look closer at the shape of the verse itself: love produces hatred of evil, and that costly loyalty is met with a promise of preservation. That's the whole gospel pattern in miniature. Jesus is the one who loved the Father perfectly and hated evil perfectly — he never once flinched from calling sin sin, and it cost him his life, delivered "into the hands of sinful men" ( Luke 24:7). He is the ultimate chasid, the loyal one, who walked straight into the grip of the wicked rather than escape it — and the Father's preservation of him wasn't avoidance of death but resurrection out of it ( Acts 2:24).

That's why this verse isn't just a moral instruction floating free — it's a promise that only makes total sense once you've seen it kept in Jesus. Paul picks up this exact language in Romans 12:9 — "detest what is evil, cling to what is good" — for people who are now "in Christ." The love that fuels your hatred of evil isn't sheer willpower; it's love for a Person you've come to know through the cross. And the deliverance promised here finds its final, unbreakable form in him: not a guarantee you'll dodge every hard hand raised against you, but a guarantee that no hand can hold you past the grave he walked out of.

Here's the uncomfortable part: this verse assumes your love for God will show up as hatred. Not tolerance, not neutrality, not "live and let live" — hatred, of evil. Most of us have been trained to think hate is always the bad guy in the story. But this verse says the absence of hatred toward evil is actually evidence something's wrong with your love.

So ask yourself honestly: is there evil in your own life — habits, patterns, compromises — that you've made peace with? Not evil "out there" in people you already dislike, but evil close in, in your own schedule, your own screen, your own mouth? Loving God costs you the comfortable arrangements you've made with your own sin. That's the specific cost this verse names. It's easy to hate evil in other people. It's much harder, and much more honest, to hate it in the mirror.

And here's the flip side, just as real: if you do take this seriously — if you actually start hating evil, calling it what it is, refusing to shrug at it — you will find yourself out of step with people around you, maybe at real cost. That's why the promise sits right next to the command. God isn't asking you to hate evil and then leaving you exposed. He's telling you: I will guard your life. I will pry you loose from hands that close around you. Trust that promise enough to actually let it change what you tolerate today.

• Lord, show me where I've made peace with something you call evil — don't let me hide it from myself any longer.
• Grow in me a love for you that's strong enough to actually produce hatred of evil, not just polite disapproval.
• Where following you is costing me relationships or comfort right now, remind me that you preserve the souls of your saints.
• Deliver me, like you delivered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, from the specific pressures pushing me to compromise.
• Teach me to hate sin without hating people — help me tell the difference in my own heart.

• Is there a person or habit in my life I tolerate for the sake of comfort, that God would call me to hate outright?
• When was the last time loving God actually cost me something socially, financially, or relationally?
• Do I trust God's promise to "preserve my soul" enough to take a risk for what's right this week?
• Where in my life am I confusing "hating evil" with simply disliking people who annoy or oppose me?
