Psalms 87:7

Picture the scene: a parade, singers out front, flute players weaving music through the crowd, all of them moving toward one city — Zion, Jerusalem, the place where God had put his name. That's what this whole psalm has been building toward. Psalm 87 starts by saying God loves Zion's gates more than anywhere else in Israel (v.2), then makes a startling claim — that people from Israel's ancient enemies, Egypt ("Rahab"), Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, even Cush far to the south, will one day be registered as citizens of Zion, born there, even though they were born somewhere else entirely (vv.4-6). It's a vision of a city bigger than its walls — a spiritual homeland gathering in outsiders.

Then verse 7 gives you the soundtrack. The singers and the pipers — the whole worship band, essentially — are not singing about Zion's real estate or its history. They're singing one line, and it's the line that matters: "All my springs of joy are in you." The "you" is God himself, not the city. Zion is glorious, but only because God lives there. Take him out, and Zion is just a hill with some walls.

What's easy to miss: this is first-person, personal. Not "our springs" as a nation, but "all my springs" — every single source of my joy, refreshment, life — traced back to one address. Not some of them. All of them. That's a comprehensive claim, and it's costly to actually believe John Gill.

Commentators have long debated whether this psalm was written when Zion was flourishing, celebrating what God had already done, or written in the ruins after the Babylonian destruction, as a hope for what God would yet do Matthew Henry. Either way — feast or ruins — the song's confession doesn't change. That's worth sitting with.

This psalm is credited to "the sons of Korah" — a guild of temple musicians and worship leaders descended from a man named Korah, who, generations earlier, had actually rebelled against Moses and been swallowed up by the earth for it ( Numbers 16). His descendants somehow survived and became some of Israel's most trusted worship writers — a detail worth remembering: the psalm about God gathering foreigners into Zion was written by the family line of a man who himself had once been an outsider to God's favor.

We don't know the exact date. Most of the Korah psalms come from sometime in the era of the Jerusalem temple, roughly 1000–500 BC, and many scholars place this one either in the glory days of Solomon's temple, when Jerusalem really was a magnet drawing pilgrims and tribute from surrounding nations, or after 586 BC, when Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian army had torn the city and temple down and marched its people into exile. If it's the latter, this psalm is an act of defiant hope sung by people whose city was rubble — insisting that God would still make Zion the center of the world, still bring foreigners home to her, even though right then nothing about Jerusalem looked like a magnet for anybody.

Either way, the picture in verses 4-6 — nations like Egypt, Babylon, and Philistia being "registered" as native-born citizens of Zion — would have sounded almost absurd to the original hearers. These were Israel's historic enemies and oppressors. Singing that they'd one day belong in Zion the way a native Israelite did was a massive stretch of imagination, only possible if you believed God himself was doing something bigger than tribal loyalty. The temple singers and instrumentalists mentioned in verse 7 were an actual, organized institution — 1 Chronicles 23:5 tells us David set apart thousands of Levites specifically to make music for worship. So this verse isn't poetic flourish; it's describing real people with real instruments, standing in a real building, singing this exact confession out loud.

The verse pairs two kinds of musicians. שִׁיר (shîyr, H7891) means "to sing" — it's the ordinary word for singers, the vocalists Strong's. Then there's חָלַל (châlal, H2490), and this one's fascinating: at its root it means "to bore" or "pierce," and from that same root you get meanings like "to wound" or even "to profane" something. But here it's used in its more specialized sense — "to play the flute" — because you literally bore holes into a reed to make one Strong's. So the picture is concrete: people breathing life through a pierced piece of wood, and music comes out. There's something almost too on-the-nose about that image sitting right next to a line about where joy comes from.

The word that carries the theological weight, though, is מַעְיָן (maʻyân, H4599) — "springs." It comes from the word for "eye" (עַיִן), because a spring was pictured as the earth's eye, water welling up from some hidden source underground Strong's. It's used both literally — an actual water source in a dry land — and figuratively, as "a source of satisfaction." That double meaning is the whole point. In a land where water wasn't a given, where you could die without a spring, calling God your "spring" wasn't a soft metaphor. It meant: you are not decoration in my life. You are the thing without which I don't survive.

Notice it's plural — "springs," not "spring." Every different stream of joy in this person's life, traced back to one wellhead.

This verse is doing something the New Testament picks up and runs with: it locates all joy, all satisfaction, all life-giving water in one place — with God himself, not in the city, not in the temple, not even in the music. And then Jesus shows up and says something startling to a woman at a well in Samaria: "whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst... the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life" ( John 4:14). He doesn't point her to Zion's temple, which by then still stood but wouldn't for much longer. He points her to himself. He's claiming to be the spring Psalm 87:7 is singing about.

John's Gospel opens with the same logic — "From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace" ( John 1:16). Jesus isn't just near the source; he is the source, in flesh, walking around.

And the picture doesn't stop at his earthly life. Revelation ends the whole Bible with this same image blown up to cosmic scale: a river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb ( Revelation 22:1), and an open invitation — "let the one who is thirsty come... and drink freely" ( Revelation 22:17). The city Psalm 87 dreamed of, where foreigners from Egypt and Babylon get citizenship papers in Zion, becomes in Revelation a city with gates that never shut, filled with people "from every nation," gathered around exactly the spring this psalm was singing about.

So when the psalmist sings "all my springs of joy are in you," you're allowed to hear that as a prayer that gets its final answer in a person — not a place, not an institution, but Jesus himself, cracked open at the cross so that living water could actually reach you.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts in front of you: if you made an honest list right now of everywhere your joy actually comes from — not where it's supposed to come from, where it actually comes from — would God be on the list? Would he be at the top, or would he be one tributary among many, competing with your career going well, your relationships working out, your body feeling good, your plans succeeding?

The psalm doesn't say "some of my springs" or "my main spring, among others." It says all of them. That's either a wildly overstated poetic exaggeration, or it's a claim that reorders your whole life. I think it's meant as the second thing.

This is costly, because most of us have built quiet backup systems for joy — things we run to when God feels far away or boring or silent. That's not necessarily sin in itself; good gifts really are good. James 1:17 says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights. But a gift is not the giver. If you've quietly made a gift into your spring — if your joy actually depends on the promotion, the relationship, the applause, the numbers on a screen — this verse asks you to notice that, and to name it honestly to God, not to pretend you've already arrived at singing this line with a clean heart.

The invitation isn't guilt, though. It's an offer. Isaiah 12:3 says you'll "draw water from the springs of salvation" with joy — not gritted teeth, joy. The whole point of a spring is that it doesn't run dry when you drink from it. Go ahead and drink deep today. See if he holds.

• Lord, show me honestly where I've been drawing my joy from lately — and where it isn't actually you.
• I confess the backup springs I've built — things I run to when you feel far away. Forgive me and draw me back.
• Thank you that you are not a stingy source — that your springs don't run dry no matter how much I need.
• Teach me to sing "all my springs are in you" not as a performance but as something true in me.
• Like the exiles who sang this in the ruins, help me trust you're still the source even when nothing around me looks hopeful.
