Psalms 83:18

This is the last line of a war prayer. Look at what comes right before it: the psalmist has just spent seventeen verses begging God to humiliate a coalition of nations that wants to erase Israel "so that the name of Israel be remembered no more" ( Psalm 83:4). Then, at the very end, the prayer turns. It's not ultimately "make me safe" or even "make me win." It's "may they know." The goal of the whole request is that Israel's enemies come to a real, personal recognition of who God is.

Notice the phrase "You alone." The Hebrew makes this almost a double statement stitched together — "that You, Your name alone is Yahweh" John Gill. This isn't a claim that God has a nicer name than the other gods. It's a claim that there are no other gods in the category God occupies. Everyone else's "god" is a local trademark; this God is the self-existing, eternal One (that's what the name Yahweh, or "the LORD," is pointing at) who happens to also rule every square inch of the planet — including the very nations plotting against Israel.

Easy to miss: this psalm isn't really about geopolitics for its own sake. Matthew Henry points out that Asaph is likely writing about a real, terrifying military alliance — several nations banding together against Judah Matthew Henry — but the prayer's climax reveals what the psalmist actually cares about underneath the fear: not vengeance, but that God's name gets known rightly, even by the people currently trying to destroy his people.

Where this sits in the bigger story: Psalms is Israel's prayer book, and this is one of the "imprecatory" psalms — prayers that ask God to judge enemies. Christians disagree sharply on how a follower of Jesus should pray these today: some read them as raw honesty God invites, others as prayers only rightly prayed by Jesus himself against ultimate evil, others as needing to be filtered through Jesus's command to love enemies ( Matthew 5:44).

Psalm 83 is attributed to Asaph, a worship leader from David's court whose family kept leading Israel's music for generations (see the heading of this and eleven other psalms). Because the psalm lists a specific, unusual combination of enemies — Edom, Ishmael, Moab, the Hagrites, Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia, Tyre, and Assyria ( Psalm 83:6-8) — many scholars link it to a real crisis rather than generic enemy language.

Matthew Henry connects it to the account in 2 Chronicles 20:1, when a massive alliance of Moabites, Ammonites, and others invaded Judah during King Jehoshaphat's reign, roughly the 9th century BC Matthew Henry. Picture the scene: Jehoshaphat gets word that a combined army from three directions is marching on Jerusalem, and Judah has no military answer to it. His response wasn't to muster troops first — it was to call a national fast and stand in the temple courts praying out loud in front of the whole nation. Psalm 83 reads like the liturgical, sung version of that same desperate national moment — a hymn meant to be prayed together by a threatened, outnumbered people who have nowhere else to turn.

This is also the political and religious world of the ancient Near East where nations understood their gods territorially — each people had its patron deity, and a nation's military defeat was read as proof that its god had lost to a stronger, rival god. That's exactly the assumption Psalm 83:18 is smashing. The psalmist isn't asking Yahweh to prove he's stronger than Chemosh (Moab's god) or Milcom (Ammon's god) in a fight between equals. He's asking these nations to discover that there is no fight between equals to be had — that Yahweh is "Most High over all the earth," including over the very lands and peoples who worship other names.

The verb that drives the whole verse is יָדַע (yâdaʻ, H3045) — "to know." But this isn't head-knowledge; the word covers everything from intimate personal relationship to firsthand experience gained by seeing something happen Strong's. When the psalmist prays that the nations will "know," he's not hoping they pass a theology quiz — he's hoping they encounter something undeniable, the way you "know" fire is hot after you've been burned.

שֵׁם (shêm, H8034), "name," in Hebrew thought isn't just a label — it carries a person's honor, authority, and character packed into it Strong's. To know God's name is to know who he actually is at his core.

That name is יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) — Yahweh, translated LORD in small caps throughout your English Bible. Strong's roots it in the idea of "the self-existent or eternal One" Strong's — the name God gave Moses at the burning bush, distinct from the more generic title "God" (Elohim) used earlier with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (compare Exodus 6:3). This is God's personal, covenant name — the name he shares only with the people he's bound himself to.

Finally, עֶלְיוֹן (ʻelyown, H5945), "Most High," literally means "elevation" or "loftiness" — the highest point there is Strong's. Interestingly, pagan nations around Israel used similar "Most High" titles for their own chief gods John Gill — which makes this verse a direct, public challenge: whatever throne you think is highest, it isn't. There's only one, and it belongs to Yahweh, over all of ʼerets (H776) — the whole earth, not just Israel's small patch of it.

This verse's prayer — that the nations would know Yahweh alone is Most High over the whole earth — is exactly what the New Testament says begins happening at the cross and resurrection. Paul writes that God highly exalted Jesus and gave him "the name that is above every name," so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — not just Israel's knees, but every knee "in heaven and on earth and under the earth" ( Philippians 2:9-10). Psalm 83:18 asks for the nations to know God's name over all the earth; Philippians 2 shows us the name they'll finally bow to is Jesus's.

There's also a quieter thread here. Psalm 97:9 makes almost the identical claim — "You, O LORD, are Most High over all the earth" — and Revelation later pictures a scene where "the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ" ( Revelation 11:15). The whole arc of the Bible is God's name going from being known by one small, embattled nation surrounded by hostile empires, to being known and worshiped by "every nation, tribe, people, and language" ( Revelation 7:9). Jesus is how that expansion happens — not by military defeat of the nations the way Asaph's enemies feared defeat, but by the nations being invited in as worshipers themselves.

It's worth being honest: this isn't a direct prophecy of Jesus the way, say, Isaiah 53 is. It's more of a deep pattern — God's ancient desire that his name and lordship be recognized by all peoples, not just his covenant people — a desire that reaches its full answer in the Great Commission ( Matthew 28:19) and in Jesus, the one through whom "every knee will bow" ( Romans 14:11, quoting Isaiah 45:23). The prayer of a threatened people in Psalm 83 gets its yes in a King who conquers not by crushing enemies but by dying for them.

Here's what should stop you cold in this verse: the psalmist is terrified, surrounded, and outnumbered — and his deepest prayer isn't "save me." It's "may they know you." He wants his enemies to end up worshiping the God he worships, not just lying dead at his feet. That's a different kind of prayer than most of us pray when we're scared or wronged.

Think about who's in your life right now that feels like an "enemy" — not literal armies, but the coworker who undermines you, the family member who's cut you off, the person whose success or cruelty makes your blood boil. Your honest prayer for them is probably closer to "let them get what's coming to them" than "let them know you." Psalm 83 gives you permission to bring God the raw fear and anger — Asaph doesn't pretend he's fine — but it doesn't let you stop there. The prayer has to end somewhere, and this psalm ends at God's glory being known, not just your safety being secured.

The cost this verse asks of you is uncomfortable: can you actually want the people who hurt you to come to know God, even if that means they're not punished the way you'd like? That's not weakness. It's aiming your fear and anger at something bigger than your own vindication. It's trusting that God being known and God being Most High matters more than you getting the last word.

And there's comfort buried here too. You're not the center of this prayer — God's name is. Whatever's threatening you right now, however outnumbered you feel, the same truth stands: he alone is Most High over all the earth. Not just over your enemies. Over the thing that's scaring you tonight.

• Lord, I bring you the people and situations that genuinely frighten me right now — I ask that you would be known as Most High over them, not just that I'd be rescued from them.
• I confess that my prayers for people who've hurt me are usually about punishment, not about them knowing you — soften that in me.
• Thank you that your name and rule don't depend on my safety — you are Yahweh, self-existent, unshaken, whether or not my circumstances change.
• I pray for the nations, leaders, and powers that feel opposed to your kingdom today — let them come to know that you alone are LORD.
• Give me the same instinct Asaph had: to let my fear turn into worship instead of only into self-protection.

• Who in your life right now would you rather see punished than see come to know God? Sit with that honestly.
• When you're afraid, does your prayer usually end at "save me" or does it get further, to "let your name be known"? What would it cost to let it get further?
• Do you actually believe God is "Most High over all the earth" — including the specific situation that's scaring you this week — or does that feel like a Sunday-school phrase right now?
• Asaph brought raw, unfiltered fear and anger to God rather than hiding it. Where are you editing your prayers to sound more "spiritual" than you actually feel?
• If God answered this prayer in your own life — if the people who oppose you actually came to know him — how would you feel? Relieved? Resentful? Be honest.
