Psalms 73:24

Look at what just happened in this psalm. Asaph, the writer, spent seventy-plus verses in a spiritual crisis — he watched arrogant, cruel people prosper while he suffered for trying to stay clean before God, and he says his feet "had almost slipped" ( Psalm 73:2). He's one step from walking away from faith entirely. Then in verse 17 something shifts: he goes into the sanctuary of God and sees where the wicked actually end up. And now, here in verse 24, he lands on solid ground. Two verbs carry the whole verse: God guides him, and God will receive him.

The guiding comes first — "with your counsel," meaning God's wise direction, His plan, His advice for how to actually live Strong's. This isn't a vague feeling of being led; it's the idea of a shepherd or a guide walking someone through unfamiliar, dangerous terrain step by step. Then comes the "afterward" — a small word doing enormous work. It signals that guidance now leads somewhere later. And that somewhere is glory — being taken (the same Hebrew verb used for Enoch being taken by God in Genesis 5:24, and for Elijah's whirlwind ride in 2 Kings 2) into weight, splendor, honor Strong's.

Easy to miss: Asaph never says his circumstances got fixed. The wicked he was jealous of aren't mentioned as punished here — he's simply found something better than an explanation. He's found a relationship that survives past death. That's a massive leap for an Old Testament believer; resurrection hope isn't spelled out clearly yet in most of the Hebrew Bible, and scholars have long debated whether Asaph is glimpsing life after death or just poetically describing being rescued from present trouble Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Older commentators tend to read it as full eternal glory; more cautious modern readers note the ambiguity. Either way, this verse is the emotional turning point of the whole psalm — despair resolved not by answers, but by nearness to God Tyndale.

Psalm 73 is attributed to Asaph, a Levite musician appointed by King David to lead worship ( 1 Chronicles 16:4-5). Twelve psalms in the Bible carry his name, though some may come from a "sons of Asaph" guild of temple singers who kept writing under his name for generations after him — which matters here, because some of the language in nearby psalms (like Psalm 74) seems to describe the Babylonian destruction of the temple in 586 BC, centuries after David's Asaph would have lived Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. So this psalm could come from anywhere in a window of roughly 1000 to 550 BC — either from Asaph himself in David's court, or from a descendant carrying his role and his name.

Whichever the date, the setting behind Psalm 73 is a small, agrarian society organized around covenant faith: you kept God's law, you trusted He'd bless faithfulness and judge wickedness. That's the deal Asaph grew up believing. But real life in ancient Israel — like real life anywhere — didn't run on that neat arithmetic. Corrupt landowners, crooked officials, people who mocked God openly, were living fat and easy ( Psalm 73:3-12), while Asaph, trying to keep his hands clean, kept getting hammered with trouble. This wasn't an abstract theological puzzle for him; it was the kind of thing that makes a devout person quietly stop praying.

His turning point comes "when I entered the sanctuary of God" ( Psalm 73:17) — meaning the temple or tabernacle worship space, where sacrifices were offered and God's presence was understood to dwell in a special way. Something about worship — not argument, not evidence — reoriented him. Verse 24 is the fruit of that reorientation: not a solved puzzle, but a settled relationship.

The verb translated "guide" is נָחָה (nâchâh, H5148) — a word that pictures leading someone by the hand through territory they don't know, and it's even used for transporting people into exile or new settlement Strong's. That double edge is worth sitting with: the same root that can mean "march someone off into captivity" here means God personally walking Asaph through his confusion and grief.

"Counsel" is עֵצָה (ʻêtsâh, H6098) — advice, plan, or prudence, from the verb "to counsel/advise." It's not random guidance; it's God's deliberate, wise plan for this specific person Strong's. John Gill reads it as covering everything from God's providence to His written word to the Spirit's inward direction John Gill.

The hinge word is אַחַר (ʼachar, H310) — "afterward, behind, after." It's a small preposition, but it's the whole engine of the verse: guidance now, glory after.

Then "receive" is לָקַח (lâqach, H3947) — a common, wide-ranging verb simply meaning "to take." But its resonance is huge, because it's the exact verb used when God "took" Enoch ( Genesis 5:24) so that he didn't experience death. Asaph reaching for that word here is not incidental Strong's.

Finally, "glory" is כָּבוֹד (kâbôwd, H3519) — literally "weight," used figuratively for splendor, honor, substantial worth Strong's. In Hebrew thought, glory isn't shiny and thin — it's heavy, solid, real. Asaph is saying: after all this vapor and confusion, God will take me somewhere that finally has weight.

Asaph doesn't know Jesus' name, but he's grasping for exactly what Jesus makes certain. The pattern here — God guiding a suffering, faithful person through confusion and then taking them up into glory — is the shape of Jesus' own life turned inside out and made solid. Jesus was guided by the Father's counsel through the worst injustice imaginable (the wicked prospering while the righteous one suffered, which is literally Asaph's complaint, taken to its extreme at the cross), and afterward — that same little word — "God exalted Him to the highest place" ( Philippians 2:9). Jesus is proof that the pattern Asaph glimpsed by faith actually happens.

And because of Jesus, Asaph's hope stops being a hunch. Jesus tells His disciples plainly, "I go to prepare a place for you... that where I am, you also may be" ( John 14:2-3) — the same "afterward, glory" logic, now spoken with a name and a promise attached. Where Asaph could only reach toward something like resurrection through worship and instinct, the New Testament stands on the other side of an empty tomb and can say it outright: "when Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory" ( Colossians 3:4).

Notice too the word for guide — the same root used for God leading Israel by the hand. Jesus takes that role directly onto Himself: "I am the good shepherd" ( John 10:11), and He promises His Spirit will "guide you into all truth" ( John 16:13), a cross-reference that lands right on top of Asaph's confession. What Asaph experienced as one man's private turning point in the temple, Jesus offers as a standing promise to everyone who trusts Him — guided now by His Spirit, received later into a glory with actual weight to it.

Here's the hard thing this verse asks of you: it doesn't fix your problem, it changes what you're asking for. Asaph never gets the wicked punished on-screen. He never gets a tidy explanation for why his suffering happened while easier lives got easier. What he gets is God's hand and a promise of "afterward." If you came to this verse wanting an answer to why your life is unfair, you might walk away disappointed — because the verse doesn't answer that question. It replaces it.

That's costly. It means some nights you will not get the explanation you're owed. You'll do everything right and still watch people who don't care about God coast through life untouched. Asaph felt that rage — read verses 3 through 14 sometime, it's raw. The turn doesn't come from him winning the argument. It comes from him showing up in worship, tired and bitter, and letting God's nearness be enough when God's explanations weren't offered.

So ask yourself honestly: are you willing to trade "tell me why" for "hold my hand"? That's not a downgrade — it's actually a bigger promise, because explanations run out and presence doesn't. The guidance is for today, in the confusing middle of your story, when you can't see two steps ahead. The glory is for later, and you don't get to see it yet either. Both require trust that has nothing to prove itself with right now.

If you're in a season where God feels absent and the unfair people around you seem untouched, don't skip past that anger the way a nice devotional would tell you to. Sit in the temple with Asaph. Let the confusion stay confusing. And then let this verse be the small, solid thing you hold onto — not because it explains everything, but because it names the only two things you actually need: a hand now, and a home later.

• Lord, I confess the bitterness I feel when I watch people who ignore You get everything I'm still waiting for — don't let me pretend that anger away.
• Guide me today with Your counsel in the specific decision I'm avoiding, even though I can't see where it leads.
• Give me the patience to trust Your "afterward" when I want answers right now.
• Thank You that Jesus walked through injustice worse than mine and was received into glory — let that be more solid to me than my circumstances.
• Teach me to find You in worship the way Asaph did, even when I walk in with more complaint than praise.

• When was the last time you were honestly angry with God about unfairness, rather than pretending you weren't?
• Where in your life right now do you need guidance more than you need an explanation?
• Does "glory later" actually feel real to you, or is it a phrase you say without believing it? Be honest.
• What would it look like this week to bring your bitterness into worship instead of leaving it at the door?
