Psalms 69:13

Look at how the verse opens: "But my prayer to You, O LORD." That little word "but" is doing a lot of work. David has just spent twelve verses describing being drowned — mocked by his own family, made "the song of drunkards," sinking in mud with no foothold ( Psalm 69:1-12). And then, instead of hitting back at his accusers, he turns. But as for me — whatever they do, whatever they say — my prayer is to you Matthew Henry. That's the pivot the whole psalm hangs on: not silence, not retaliation, but prayer as the only weapon he reaches for.

Then comes the specific ask: "for a time of favor." He's not just asking God to notice him eventually — he's asking for this moment, right now, in the middle of the mess, to be the moment God moves. And he grounds the whole request in who God already is: "abundant loving devotion" — not a thin trickle of mercy but a flood of it — and "sure salvation," a rescue you can actually stand on, not a maybe.

Easy to miss: David doesn't argue that he deserves rescue. He doesn't say "because I've been faithful, save me." He appeals entirely to God's character — his loyal love (chesed) and his reliability (emet, the same root as "amen"). This is a man who has run out of arguments for himself and is leaning his whole weight on who God is.

In the shape of the psalm, this verse is the hinge between lament (the drowning, verses 1-12) and renewed petition (verses 14-18), before the psalm turns again toward praise. Where readers disagree: some read this psalm as pure historical autobiography of David's own suffering; others read it — following its heavy use in the New Testament — as a psalm David wrote about himself that God intended to point beyond David, to someone greater who would suffer even more unjustly. Both readings can be true at once, and the New Testament itself treats this psalm both ways.

This psalm is attributed to David, most likely written sometime during his reign (roughly 1010–970 BC), though we don't know the exact crisis behind it. What we do know from the psalm's own words is the shape of the trouble: false accusation, public shame, rejection by his own brothers, and religious zeal that got twisted into a reason for mockery — "zeal for your house has consumed me... the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me" ( Psalm 69:9). This wasn't private pain; it was public humiliation. Verse 12 pictures him becoming a joke sung by drunks in the city gate — the ancient equivalent of being the punchline in every bar in town.

Prayer itself, in this world, wasn't a quiet private habit the way it often is for us — it was often public, vocal, sometimes accompanied by fasting, sackcloth, and visible mourning (see verse 10-11, where his fasting and mourning clothes themselves became fuel for ridicule). So when David says "my prayer is to you," he means: even while they're laughing at the way I pray, I keep praying.

This psalm became enormously important to later Jewish and Christian readers precisely because of how much unjust suffering is packed into it — hated without cause, given gall for food, zeal for God's house consuming him. Centuries later, the writers of the New Testament kept reaching for this exact psalm to describe Jesus, more than almost any other psalm outside of Psalm 22. That's not a coincidence readers should skip past — the early church heard David's voice here and heard something bigger echoing underneath it.

The word for "prayer" is תְּפִלָּה (tephillah, H8605), which comes from a root meaning to intervene or plead a case — this isn't casual talk, it's David formally bringing his case before the one Judge who matters Strong's.

"Time of favor" translates עֵת רָצוֹן (eth ratson) — eth (H6256) just means "time" or "the right moment," and ratson (H7522) means delight, pleasure, or acceptance — the sense of God actually being pleased to act Strong's. David isn't asking for a random opening; he's asking for the moment when God's own good pleasure lines up with his need.

Then two words carry the weight of his hope: רֹב חֶסֶד (rov chesed) — "abundance" (H7230) of chesed (H2617), that famously untranslatable Hebrew word for covenant loyalty, loving devotion, the kind of love that keeps showing up because it made a promise, not because it's earned Strong's. And "sure salvation" is אֱמֶת יֶשַׁע (emet yesha) — emet (H571) meaning firmness, trustworthiness, the root that gives us "amen," and yesha (H3468) meaning deliverance or rescue Strong's. So the last line of the verse is really: "answer me with the trustworthiness of your rescue" — not just save me, but save me in a way that proves you're solid.

Finally, the verb "answer" — עָנָה (anah, H6030) — means more than acknowledging; it carries the idea of paying attention and responding in kind, the way you'd answer a call that actually reaches you Strong's.

Paul quotes the sister verse to this one — Isaiah 49:8, "In the time of favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you" — and says point-blank: "Behold, now is the time of favor; now is the day of salvation" ( 2 Corinthians 6:2). That's the same phrase David is praying for here — a time of favor — and Paul says it has arrived, in Christ. What David asked God to do for him, God has now done through Jesus, for anyone who trusts him.

But there's a deeper thread than just word-matching. This whole psalm — the hatred without cause, the zeal for God's house consuming him, the gall and vinegar offered for food and drink ( Psalm 69:21, quoted directly at the cross in Matthew 27:34) — reads like a map of Jesus' own suffering. He was mocked while he prayed. He was rejected by those closest to him. He was made a public spectacle. And like David here, he didn't retaliate — he "entrusted himself to him who judges justly" ( 1 Peter 2:23). Hebrews puts it even more starkly: "He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence" ( Hebrews 5:7).

That's the real weight of this verse landing on Jesus. He is the one who prayed exactly this prayer in Gethsemane and on the cross — for a time of favor, for God's abundant loving devotion, for a rescue he could trust — and the Father answered, not by removing the cross, but by raising him from the dead on the third day. David's hinge-verse, "but as for me, my prayer is to you," becomes the very posture of Jesus in his darkest hour. And because he was heard, you can trust that when you pray this same prayer in your own drowning, you're not shouting into silence.

Here's the cost this verse asks of you: when people mock you, misread you, or make you the joke of the room — especially for something that came from actually trying to follow God — the temptation is to either go quiet and hide, or to fight back and defend yourself loudly. David does neither. He turns to God instead. That's the hard, unglamorous move: not winning the argument, not proving them wrong, just praying.

Notice what he doesn't say. He doesn't say "prove me right." He doesn't build a case for his own innocence. He asks for favor he can't earn and loving devotion that's already abundant before he ever asked for it. If you've been waiting to pray until you feel like you deserve an answer, stop waiting. That's not how this verse works, and it's not how grace works.

And be honest with yourself about the timing question buried in this verse. David asks for "a time of favor" — meaning he knows there are times that aren't. Silence from God is real. Waiting is real. This verse doesn't promise instant rescue; it models what to do in the meantime — keep bringing your case to the one Judge who actually judges rightly, instead of trying every other exit first.

So here's the ask for you today: the next time you're the one being talked about, misunderstood, or quietly humiliated, resist the pull to defend yourself to everyone in the room. Take it to God first. Not because he needs convincing of your side, but because he's the only one whose loyal love is actually deep enough to hold what you're carrying.
