Psalms 45:7

Look at the shape of this verse: it's a because sentence. "You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness" — that's the character. "Therefore God, your God, has anointed you above your companions" — that's the consequence. The love and hate aren't feelings that flicker; they're settled loyalties. This king doesn't just approve of righteousness in theory — he loves it the way you love a person. And he doesn't just disapprove of wickedness — he hates it, viscerally, the way you hate what threatens someone you love.

Then comes the strange line: "God, your God, has anointed you." Read that again. This king is being addressed as one who has a God — someone above him — and yet the very next verse (45:6) has just called him "God" outright ("Your throne, O God, is forever and ever"). So within two verses you get a king who is called God, and who also has a God over him. That double reality is exactly what Christians later saw pointing straight at Jesus — fully God, and yet, as man, one who has God as his God John Gill. This isn't a contradiction the psalmist is worried about; it's a mystery he's simply stating.

Psalm 45 is a wedding song, written for a royal marriage (see the superscription and 45:1, 45:9-15), but it explodes past any ordinary king almost immediately — his throne lasts forever (45:6), his name will be remembered "through all generations" (45:17). Most readers across history, including the author of Hebrews, have concluded this psalm was never really about any human bridegroom on his own — it's about a King who was always meant to be more Matthew Henry. Where Christians disagree is exactly how directly to read it: some see David or Solomon as an original historical occasion the psalm later transcends; others say it was messianic from the very ink of the pen, with no human king actually fitting the description.

Psalm 45 comes out of the world of ancient Israel's monarchy, most likely written for the wedding of a Davidic king — the superscription mentions "the sons of Korah," a guild of temple singers, so this was composed for public, liturgical performance, not private devotion. Scholars date it anywhere from the united monarchy of Solomon (10th century BC) to later kings of Judah, but nobody can pin it to one wedding with certainty — and that's part of the point. It reads like a piece written to be sung at any royal wedding, dressed up with poetry so grand it kept outrunning whatever king actually wore the crown that day.

Picture the occasion: a royal court, a bride arriving "in gold-woven garments" (45:13), a king praised for his splendor, his weapons, his justice. Anointing with oil was the coronation ritual of the ancient Israelite king — priests poured olive oil, often perfumed, over the head of the man being set apart to rule (see 1 Samuel 10:1, 1 Kings 1:39). Oil marked you as chosen, set apart, given the Spirit's enabling for the job. "Oil of joy" evokes the feasting and celebration of a wedding banquet, where guests were anointed with fragrant oil as a sign of festive honor Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

By the time the New Testament writers got hold of this psalm, Israel's kings were long gone — the monarchy had collapsed centuries earlier, first when Assyria crushed the northern kingdom in 722 BC, then when Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and ended Davidic rule in 586 BC. So when the author of Hebrews (writing to Jewish Christians tempted to drift back to old ways, likely sometime before AD 70) reached for a psalm to prove Jesus was greater than any angel, he picked this one and quoted it straight to Jesus ( Hebrews 1:9) — the long-awaited King this royal wedding song had been reaching for all along.

The verb pair here is doing heavy lifting. אָהַב (ʼâhab, H157) means to have real affection for something — the same word used for love between spouses, not just polite approval Strong's. Paired against it is שָׂנֵא (sânêʼ, H8130), "to hate personally" — not mild distaste but a gut-level rejection Strong's. Together they describe a king whose whole being is oriented: drawn toward צֶדֶק (tsedeq, H6664), rightness — moral, legal, the way things ought to be — and repelled by רֶשַׁע (reshaʻ, H7562), wrong, moral crookedness Strong's.

Then the pivot word: מָשַׁח (mâshach, H4886) — to rub with oil, to anoint, to consecrate Strong's. This is the verb root behind "Messiah" itself — mashiach, the anointed one. Every time you read "Messiah" or "Christ" (its Greek equivalent), you're hearing an echo of this verb: someone oil has been poured on to set them apart for God's work.

The oil itself, שֶׁמֶן (shemen, H8081), is described with שָׂשׂוֹן (sâsôwn, H8342), cheerfulness, festive welcome Strong's — this isn't the somber oil of a funeral, it's celebration oil, wedding-feast oil. And notice who he's anointed above: his חָבֵר (châbêr, H2270), his companions, associates, fellow office-holders Strong's — other kings, other anointed ones, but none like him.

And don't skip past אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430) — the word can mean God, gods, or (in rare, deferential uses) even human rulers acting with divine authority Strong's. Its double appearance here — "God, your God" — is precisely why this verse became a flashpoint for how Christians read Jesus' identity into the Hebrew Bible.

This is not a case where you have to squint to find Jesus — the New Testament does the work for you. The author of Hebrews quotes this exact verse word for word and applies it directly to Jesus, in the middle of an argument for why the Son is greater than any angel ( Hebrews 1:9). Right before it, Hebrews 1:8 quotes Psalm 45:6 — "Your throne, O God, is forever" — and applies that to Jesus too. So the New Testament reads this psalm the way the church has read it ever since: not primarily about David, not primarily about Solomon, but about the true King these earthly kings were only shadows of Matthew Henry.

Think about what's being said. Jesus is the one human being who ever loved righteousness perfectly and hated wickedness perfectly — no mixed motives, no compromise, no talking himself into the comfortable lie. Every other king in Israel's history, even the good ones, loved righteousness some days. Jesus loved it with his whole life, all the way to a cross, because loving righteousness there meant refusing to call down angels to save himself ( Matthew 26:53) and instead absorbing the wickedness of the world rather than joining it.

And "anointed above your companions" lands with startling weight on him. John tells us God gave him the Spirit "without limit" ( John 3:34) — not measured out like it was for prophets and priests before him, but given fully, because he is the Anointed One every partial anointing in Israel's history was pointing toward. The "oil of joy" becomes, in Acts 2:28 (quoting Psalm 16), the resurrection joy of being in God's presence forever — the wedding feast this psalm pictures finds its true guest of honor in the risen Christ, and in Ephesians 1:3, every blessing his people now have flows from being joined to him, the truly Anointed King.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts in front of you: do you actually love righteousness, or do you just prefer not to get caught in wickedness? Those are very different things. One is a moral safety habit. The other is falling in love with what is good the way you'd fall in love with a person — wanting it, missing it when it's absent, feeling its pull even when no one's watching.

You're not the King this psalm is about. You don't anoint yourself with perfect love for righteousness — you know your own mixed motives too well for that. But here's the good news buried in the "therefore": Jesus was anointed for you, not just instead of you. His perfect love of righteousness becomes the ground you stand on. And because you're joined to him, the same Spirit that was poured out on him without measure has been given to you too — not without measure, but really, truly given ( Ephesians 1:3, John 3:34).

So the cost this verse asks of you isn't earning an anointing you could never earn. It's letting go of the comfortable half-love you have for righteousness — the kind that says "I'm basically a good person" — and actually asking to be remade by someone who loved it enough to die for it. That will cost you your excuses. It will cost you the sins you've quietly made peace with, the wickedness you've stopped hating because you've gotten used to it. Ask him today: not "help me look righteous" but "give me your loves — make me hate what you hate and love what you love." That's a dangerous prayer. It's also the only one this verse leaves you room to pray.

• Thank you that you were anointed with the Spirit without limit, and that because I belong to you, that same Spirit has been given to me too.
• Teach me to actually hate the sin I've made peace with, instead of just managing it or hiding it.
• Give me the oil of joy you promise — not manufactured happiness, but the real gladness of being near you.
• Make me love what is right the way I love a person, not just avoid what is wrong the way I avoid a fine.
