It is probable that David penned this psalm when he was persecuted by Saul; some passages in it agree particularly to the narrow escapes he had, at Keilah (Sa1 23:13), then in the wilderness of Maon, when Saul marched on one side of the hill and he on the other, and, soon after, in the cave in the wilderness of En-gedi; but that it was penned upon any of those occasions we are not told. It is a mixture of prayers, and praises, and professions of confidence in God, all which do well together and are helpful to one another. I. David professes his cheerful confidence in God, and, in that confidence, prays for deliverance out of his present troubles (Psa 31:1-8). II. He complains of the very deplorable condition he was in, and, in the sense of his calamities, still prays that God would graciously appear for him against his persecutors (Psa 31:9-18). III. He concludes the psalm with praise and triumph, giving glory to God, and encouraging himself and others to trust in him (Psa 31:19-24). To the chief musician. A psalm of David.

Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.
When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You.
Therefore Jesus told them, “Although your time is always at hand, My time has not yet come.
Listen to my cry, for I am brought quite low. Rescue me from my pursuers, for they are too strong for me.
“Why does the Almighty not reserve times for judgment? Why may those who know Him never see His days?
For the enemy has pursued my soul, crushing my life to the ground, making me dwell in darkness like those long since dead.
Deliver me from my enemies, O LORD; I flee to You for refuge.
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
David added, “As surely as the LORD lives, the LORD Himself will strike him down; either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.
