Psalms 22:16

Look at the picture David paints: he's a hunted animal, and the hunters have closed in. "Dogs surround me" — not pets, but wild, scavenging street dogs that run in packs and go for the kill Tyndale. Then he sharpens the image: "a band of evil men encircles me" — this isn't random cruelty, it's an organized mob with a plan Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. And then the line that has caused more ink to be spilled than almost any other verse in the Psalms: "they have pierced my hands and feet."

Here's what's easy to miss if you're reading in English: the Hebrew behind "pierced" is genuinely difficult. The text that's come down to us in the standard Hebrew manuscripts (the Masoretic Text) has a word that looks like "like a lion" (ka'ari) rather than "they pierced" (karu) — same consonants, different vowels, and Hebrew was originally written without vowels Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. If it's "like a lion," the image is of lions mauling his hands and feet, tearing at him the way a predator disables its prey before the kill. If it's "pierced," the image is far more specific — something has gone through his hands and feet. The oldest Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint, made centuries before Jesus) and the Dead Sea Scrolls both support "pierced," which is why almost every English Bible you'll read, including the BSB, translates it that way.

This verse sits in the middle of the most gut-wrenching section of the psalm — David, hunted and humiliated, feels God has gone silent ( Psalm 22:1) while his enemies close in for the kill. Where Christians disagree: some scholars think David is using violent hyperbole about his own suffering with no forward-looking intent at all, while others — including virtually the whole historic Christian tradition — read this as prophetic speech that outstrips anything David himself experienced Matthew Henry.

This psalm is attributed to David, likely written sometime in the 10th century BC, during the long years when he was either fleeing King Saul's assassins in the wilderness of Judah or facing betrayal and rebellion later in his reign as king. We don't know the exact circumstance the psalm was born out of, and that's actually important — the language is stretched further than any single event in David's life can account for. No one ever executed David by piercing his hands and feet. Crucifixion, the Roman method of execution that did exactly that, wasn't even invented yet; Rome wouldn't exist as a power for another five hundred years, and crucifixion as a punishment wouldn't be perfected by the Persians and Romans for even longer than that.

So picture David: hunted like game, surrounded by men who want him dead, maybe hiding in a cave in the Judean wilderness with Saul's soldiers combing the hills, or later cornered by his own son Absalom's coup. He reaches for the most extreme, visceral language he has — wild dogs, lions, a mob closing in, his body wasted and pierced — to describe agony that feels like death itself. He's using poetry to describe the feeling of being torn apart, publicly humiliated, and abandoned by God.

What almost nobody in David's audience could have known is that a thousand years later, a descendant of David would be nailed to a Roman cross outside Jerusalem, his hands and feet actually pierced through, his executioners actually casting lots for his clothing (compare Psalm 22:18 with Matthew 27:35 and John 19:23–24). The psalm was read and sung in Israel's worship for centuries as raw, honest lament — a man crying out in his darkest hour — long before anyone read it as a window into the cross.

Three words carry the weight here. כֶּלֶב (keleb, H3611) means "dog," but not a golden retriever curled by the fire — this is a scavenging pack animal, associated even in its root meaning with attacking or yelping in pursuit Strong's. Calling someone a dog in this world was one of the sharpest insults available; it meant predatory, unclean, shameless.

עֵדָה (ʻêdâh, H5712) is usually a neutral word for "assembly" or "congregation" — it's the same word used for Israel gathered to worship. Here it's twisted: this is an assembled crowd, but gathered for evil, "a band of evil men" Strong's. The irony stings — the very word for God's covenant community becomes the word for a mob bent on murder.

נָקַף (nâqaph, H5362) means to encircle or surround, sometimes with the sense of striking violence as the circle closes Strong's — it's not passive surrounding, it's a noose tightening.

And then the disputed word: the consonants כארי can be read as אֲרִי (ʼărîy, H738), "lion," with a prefix meaning "like," or — following the ancient Greek translation and the Dead Sea Scrolls — as a form of כָּרָה (kârâh, H3738), a verb whose root sense is "to dig" or "bore open," which stretches naturally to "pierce" Strong's. Finally, יָד (yâd, H3027) "hand" and רֶגֶל (regel, H7272) "foot" Strong's are ordinary words — but put together with "pierced," they describe an execution method that didn't exist yet.

This is one of those places in Scripture where the connection to Jesus isn't a stretch — it's the reason serious readers have argued about a single Hebrew word for two thousand years. If the word really is "pierced," David wrote, under the inspiration of the Spirit, a description of an execution method that wouldn't exist for centuries, and it landed precisely on what would happen to great-great-(many times over)-grandson on a Roman cross outside Jerusalem Matthew Henry. The New Testament writers don't quote this exact clause directly, but they didn't need to — the whole psalm becomes the soundtrack of the crucifixion. Jesus himself opens his mouth on the cross and quotes verse 1 of this very psalm ("My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" — Matthew 27:46), which is like pulling a thread that unravels the whole garment: he's telling everyone standing there, this psalm is about me.

The soldiers casting lots for his clothing ( Matthew 27:35, Mark 15:24, John 19:23–24) fulfills verse 18 almost word for word. And when the soldier drives a spear into his side ( John 19:34), and when doubting Thomas demands to see and touch the actual nail marks in his hands ( John 20:25, 27), you're watching the "pierced" of Psalm 22:16 become literal, physical, historical fact.

Zechariah, writing centuries after David, picks up the same image — "they will look on Me, the one they have pierced" ( Zechariah 12:10) — and John quotes that very line as being fulfilled at the cross ( John 19:37). Isaiah adds the why: "he was pierced for our transgressions" ( Isaiah 53:5) — not an accident of Roman cruelty, but a substitution, him taking what our sin earned. Psalm 22:16 doesn't just predict a method of death. It points to a person who let himself be torn apart by dogs so you wouldn't have to be.

Sit with this for a second: the God you pray to knows what it feels like to be surrounded by people who want you gone. Not metaphorically — actually surrounded, actually mocked, actually pierced through. When you feel like your life has become a pack of dogs closing in — betrayal, diagnosis, the slow circling of some fear you can't shake — you're not praying to a distant deity who's never been in the room. You're praying to someone who wrote this psalm's ending from the inside.

But here's the cost this verse asks of you: don't rush past the horror to get to the resurrection. It's tempting to read "pierced" and immediately jump to Easter Sunday, skipping over the actual weight of what it cost. Sit in the dogs, the mob, the nails, for a minute. Let it be as ugly as it actually was. Because if you soften it, you'll never feel the size of what he was willing to walk into for you — and you'll never feel the size of what your sin actually required.

And then ask yourself honestly: when you're the one surrounded, do you talk to God the way David does here — raw, specific, unflinching — or do you keep your prayers polite and vague because you don't quite believe he can handle your real complaint? This psalm gives you permission to name the dogs. Name what's circling you. Say it plainly to God, the way David did, the way Jesus did with his own lips on the cross. He's not offended by your honesty. He's been there.

• Lord, when I feel surrounded — by people, by fear, by circumstances closing in — help me bring you the raw, specific truth of it instead of a tidy prayer.
• Jesus, thank you for letting yourself be pierced, mocked, and torn apart so that I would never be abandoned the way this psalm describes.
• Give me the courage to actually sit with the cost of the cross instead of rushing past it to the comfort of the resurrection.
• Where I've kept you at arm's length with polite prayers, teach me to pray like David — honest, unguarded, even angry if that's the truth.
• Thank you that you know exactly what it feels like to be hunted, betrayed, and alone — draw me closer to you in the middle of whatever is circling me right now.
