Psalms 145:18

Look at the shape of the sentence first: "The LORD is near." Not "the Lord is available" or "the Lord answers requests" — near, like someone standing close enough to touch. Then it tells you who gets that nearness: "all who call on Him." Not the impressive, not the theologically sophisticated, not people with the right resume — all who call. But then David narrows it with a second phrase that repeats and sharpens the first: "to all who call out to Him in truth." Same group, described twice, because the second half is qualifying the first. It's not just that you dial the number — it's how you dial it.

Easy to miss: this verse is sitting inside an alphabet. Psalm 145 is an acrostic — each verse starts with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet, A to Z, so to speak Matthew Henry. That's not decoration. It's David saying, "I want to praise God from A to Z, exhaustively, leaving no letter, no angle, unpraised." Verse 18 falls in the middle of that sweep, and it's doing something the whole psalm does: moving from grand cosmic claims about God's greatness (v.3, "His greatness no one can fathom") down into this intimate, personal promise that this same enormous God bends down close to ordinary people who call His name.

Where this sits in the bigger story: Psalm 145 is the last psalm attributed to David in the Psalter, and it functions almost like his closing statement — a full-throated hymn of praise capping off a life full of desperate prayers Matthew Henry. Verse 18 is the theological hinge of the whole song: God's transcendence (He rules over everything, v.13) doesn't make Him distant. Psalm 145 carries David's name in its heading, which places its writing somewhere in his reign as king over Israel, roughly 1000–970 BC. David wrote from a life that was anything but safe — hunted by King Saul for years, fighting wars on every border, watching his own family fall apart later in his reign. He knew what it was to call out to God from caves, from battlefields, from a palace rooftop after doing something terribly wrong. So when he writes "the LORD is near," it's not armchair theology. It's a man reporting what he found to be true after decades of testing it.

This psalm is also carefully built — it's an acrostic, meaning David composed it letter by letter through the Hebrew alphabet, a technique used elsewhere in the Psalms (like Psalm 34 and Psalm 119) Matthew Henry. Acrostics were partly a memory device — easier for people who couldn't read to memorize and recite — and partly an art form declaring completeness: praising God thoroughly, systematically, leaving nothing out.

By the time this psalm was collected into the final shape of the Psalter (likely finalized after the Babylonian exile, sometime after 538 BC, when the Jewish community had been scattered and returned), it sat at the close of the book almost as a summary statement. It's worth remembering that "calling on the name of the LORD" had a long history already by David's time — going back to Genesis 4:26, where people first began "calling on the name of the LORD" after Adam and Eve's grandchildren were born. David is standing in a very old tradition of ordinary people crying out to God and expecting to be heard, a confidence rooted in the belief — spelled out plainly in Deuteronomy 4:7 — that no other nation had a god as near to them as Israel's God was.

The name for God here is יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) Strong's — the personal, covenant name God gave Himself at the burning bush, tied to the idea of self-existence, the One who simply is. This isn't "a god" or "the divine" in the abstract. It's the specific name Israel was given permission to use, the name of the God who had bound Himself to them by promise.

The word for "near" is קָרוֹב (qârôwb, H7138) Strong's, which comes from a root meaning "to draw near" or "approach." It's used for physical proximity — a nearby city, a nearby relative — as much as it's used here for God. David isn't reaching for poetic vagueness; he's using the ordinary word you'd use to say your neighbor's house is close by. That's deliberate. The Eternal, self-existent God is described with the same word you'd use for the guy next door.

"Call on" or "call out to" translates קָרָא (qârâʼ, H7121) Strong's — literally "to call by name," the way you'd shout for someone across a room, addressing them directly, expecting them to turn and answer. It's relational and specific, not a vague wish sent up into the sky.

And then אֶמֶת (ʼemeth, H571) Strong's — "truth," but the root idea (from a word meaning "to be firm, to be established") is really about stability, reliability, trustworthiness — the same root that gives us "amen." So "calling in truth" isn't just "not lying while you pray." It's calling with a heart that's actually anchored, actually leaning its full weight on God, not performing or hedging bets with other gods on the side.

Here's the tension this verse sets up: God is near to those who call on Him in truth — but who actually does that? Scripture is honest that nobody calls with a perfectly stable, undivided heart. Even David, who wrote this, murdered a man to cover an affair. If nearness to God depended on our truth being flawless, this verse would be a locked door, not an open one.

This is exactly where the New Testament says Jesus steps in. John's Gospel takes the language of this verse and hangs it directly on Jesus: "God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth" ( John 4:24). Jesus is the one who told the woman at the well that a new kind of nearness to God was arriving — not tied to a mountain or a temple, but to Him. He is, as He says elsewhere, "the way and the truth and the life" ( John 14:6) — so calling on God "in truth" now means calling through Him, the one who is truth in person.

And then there's the staggering promise in John 14:23 — Jesus doesn't just say God will be near to those who love Him; He says "We will come to him and make Our home with him." The nearness David sang about becomes, in Christ, God actually moving in. Not visiting nearby — living inside.

The cross is where this gets its cost. Hebrews 4:16 tells believers to "approach the throne of grace with confidence" — a bold, close-up word, the same idea as "near" — because Jesus tore open the way by His own blood ( Hebrews 10:19-20). David could say God was near to the sincere. Jesus made a way for the insincere, the divided-hearted, the double-minded ( James 4:8) to become people whose hearts are made stable — made "true" — by what He did. The nearness isn't earned by our truthfulness; it's given through His.

Here's the question this verse actually puts to you, today, right now: when you call out to God, are you calling in truth, or are you performing?

It's an easy thing to fake. You can say the right words, use the right posture, even feel a little emotional — and still be holding something back, still be hedging, still keeping one hand on the wheel because you don't fully trust that He'll actually catch you. "In truth" means no hedging. It means the words matching the heart, the whole weight actually leaning on Him instead of just resting a fingertip there for show.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty — the specific, uncomfortable kind. Not polished prayer language. Not the version of yourself you'd want other Christians to overhear. The actual mess, spoken plainly, trusting that God being near doesn't depend on you cleaning up first. Look at who this promise is for: not the impressive, not the spiritually together, but "all who call" — as long as the calling is real.

And here's the mercy in it: this verse doesn't say God is near to those who've arrived, who've got it figured out, who pray beautifully. It says He's near to the ones who call — present tense, ongoing, in the middle of the mess, mid-sentence, mid-crisis, mid-doubt. If you've been keeping God at arm's length because you don't feel worthy of His nearness yet, this verse is telling you that's backward. The nearness isn't the reward for getting it together. It's the promise that meets you while you're still not there.

So don't pray your Sunday-best prayer today. Pray the true one.

• Lord, I don't want to fake my prayers to You anymore — teach me what it means to call on You in truth, with nothing held back.
• Thank You that Your nearness isn't reserved for people who have it together; draw near to me right where I actually am today.
• Show me the places where my heart is divided — where I'm calling on You with my mouth but trusting something else with my life.
• Because of Jesus, let me come near with confidence instead of shame or performance.
• When I'm desperate and don't have polished words, remind me that You're already close, listening.
