Psalms 138:8

Read this verse slowly, because it's doing two things at once. First half: a flat, confident statement. "The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me" — literally, will finish or complete what concerns me Strong's. Second half: a prayer, almost pleading. "Do not abandon the works of Your hands." That's strange, isn't it? If you're already sure God will finish the job, why beg Him not to quit? That tension is the whole verse. David isn't contradicting himself — he's doing what faith actually looks like: he believes God will finish, and he still asks Him to, because certainty about God's character doesn't erase the anxiety of living unfinished John Gill.

Notice the phrase "the works of Your hands." David isn't just talking about his circumstances — his kingdom, his safety. Where might Christians read this differently? Some traditions hear "fulfill His purpose for me" mainly about outward circumstances — vindication, deliverance, a settled life. Psalm 138 carries David's name in its heading, and while we can't pin down the exact day he wrote it, the content fits a man who has known both royal triumph and real danger — someone who has been hunted (like his years dodging Saul, roughly 1020–1010 BC, hiding in caves at Adullam and En-gedi) and someone who has also stood as king with real enemies still circling Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. The psalm as a whole thanks God "before the gods" (verse 1) — a jab at the idols of the nations around Israel, since kings in the ancient world were expected to credit their victories to their national deity, and David instead insists Israel's God alone deserves the praise.

By the time we reach verse 8, the tone has shifted from gratitude to something more vulnerable. Whatever specific crisis prompted this psalm, David is a man who knows firsthand that plans fall apart — promises get broken, kingdoms get threatened, sons rebel, armies gather. He's not writing from a place of naive optimism. He's writing as someone who has watched God rescue him before and is now staking his future on the same God doing it again.

This psalm was later sung by the whole worshiping community of Israel, not just kept as David's private journal. Long after David died, ordinary Israelites — farmers, priests, exiles rebuilding a shattered nation — sang these words as their own, asking God to finish what He'd started in them, not just in a king. That's part of why the psalm outlived its original moment: it names something true for anyone whose life still feels unfinished.

The key verb is גָּמַר (gamar, H1584) — "to end, complete, bring to full finish" Strong's. It's not "help me" or "improve my situation." It's the language of a project reaching its final form — the last brushstroke, the last stitch. David is trusting God to be the one who closes the loop on his life, not just patches the holes.

Then there's חֶסֶד (chesed, H2617) — "loving devotion," sometimes translated "steadfast love" or "mercy" Strong's. This word is loaded in Hebrew; it means covenant loyalty — the kind of love that keeps showing up because of a promise made, not because the other party earned it fresh each day. When David says God's chesed "endures forever" (עוֹלָם, olam, H5769 — a word for time so vast it fades out of sight, past or future Strong's), he's not describing a mood God is in. He's describing a covenant God cannot break.

And the plea itself: רָפָה (raphah, H7503) — "to slacken, let drop, abandon, let go limp" Strong's. David is picturing God's hand possibly going slack on him, the grip loosening. That's what he's begging won't happen — not that God stop loving him in theory, but that God not let go of him in practice.

Finally, מַעֲשֶׂה יָד (ma'aseh yad) — "the work of the hand" (H4639, H3027) Strong's — is craftsman language. David calls himself something made, still held by the Maker's open hand (yad specifically pictures the open hand of power and direction, not a closed fist).

This verse is one long echo that lands, unmistakably, in the mouth of Paul writing to the church at Philippi: "being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" ( Philippians 1:6). Paul is quoting David's confidence almost word for word — but now with a finish line named: "the day of Christ Jesus." David trusted God to finish the work without knowing exactly what the finish would look like or when it would come. You get to know both. The completion David hoped for finds its shape and its guarantee in Jesus — His death that pays for the unfinished parts of you, His resurrection that proves God really does finish what He starts, and His promised return that names the actual day the work gets done.

There's also a quieter thread here: David calls himself "the work of Your hands." Jesus is the one place in all of history where God's hand didn't just shape a life from a distance — He took on a body, took on hands Himself, and let them be nailed down so that His grip on you would never slacken. The hand that formed you is the same hand that bled for you.

And notice: 1 Thessalonians 5:24 makes the same move — "The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it" — pinned directly to God's calling through Christ. David's confidence wasn't wishful thinking; it was a preview of a promise that gets its full weight and certainty only once Jesus rises from the dead. Your unfinished life isn't an accident God might abandon. It's a project He's already proven, in Christ, that He completes.

Here's the honest question this verse puts to you: do you actually believe your life is a project God is still working on, or do you secretly believe you're finished — stuck, set, as good as you're going to get? Because David didn't write this from a place of having it together. He wrote it in the middle of danger, uncertainty, unfinished business — and he still called himself "the work of Your hands," present tense, still on the wheel.

That's a strange kind of comfort and a real cost, both. The comfort: you don't have to finish yourself. You don't have to have your character fixed, your faith solid, your life sorted before God will keep working on you. The cost: it means admitting you're not done — that the parts of you that are selfish, afraid, addicted, proud, or numb are not permanent fixtures but material God is still shaping. That's humbling. It means letting go of the exhausting project of finishing yourself, and it means staying under the hand, even when the hand is doing something that hurts — sanding, not just soothing.

And then there's David's prayer itself: "do not abandon." That's not a polished, confident prayer. That's the prayer of someone who knows, deep down, that he cannot guarantee his own outcome — who needs to ask, out loud, for God to stay. Have you prayed that lately? Not "help me," not "fix this," but "don't let go of me"? Try praying it today, specifically about the part of your life that feels most unfinished, most fragile, most likely to fall apart if God's hand slackened for even a day.

• Thank You that in Jesus, the work You begin You actually complete. Grow my confidence in that promise until the day it's fully true.

• Where in your life have you quietly decided you're "finished" — that this is just how you are and always will be? What would it mean to hand that specific area back to God as unfinished work?
