Psalms 118:6

Look at the sentence structure here — it's really three short bursts, almost like someone catching their breath. "The LORD is on my side." Pause. "I will not be afraid." Pause. "What can man do to me?" That's not a calm theological statement; it's a man talking himself off a ledge in real time.

The Hebrew behind "The LORD is on my side" is more literally "the LORD is for me" — with the Hebrew word for LORD here being the covenant name, Yahweh (יְהֹוָה), the name God gave when he bound himself to Israel by promise, not the generic word for a god Strong's. This isn't "a higher power is vaguely rooting for me." It's the specific God who cut a covenant with this specific person's people. That's the whole engine of the verse.

Notice too what the psalmist does with "man" — the Hebrew word is adam, humanity in general, any human being, mankind as a category Strong's. He's not just talking about one enemy. He's saying: line up every human being who could possibly threaten me, and set them against the LORD who is for me — that's not even a contest.

This verse sits inside a psalm of victory ( Psalm 118 as a whole) sung by someone who has just come through a crushing threat — most likely David near the end of his hard-won climb to the throne, looking back at years of being hunted Matthew Henry. Some scholars think it was written later, for pilgrims processing up to Jerusalem for festivals, which is worth knowing so you don't assume it's only ever a private, personal confession Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Either way, the "I" here was never meant to stay locked in one man's biography — it becomes something the whole worshiping community says together.

Psalm 118 is the last of what's called the Hallel psalms ( Psalms 113–118) — a set of songs Jewish households sang at Passover, and also at the festival of Tabernacles when pilgrims climbed the road up to Jerusalem. If David wrote it, picture it coming out of a life that included years of hiding in caves from King Saul, watching his own men debate stoning him ( 1 Samuel 30:6), losing children to war and betrayal, and finally sitting on a throne he'd been anointed for as a teenager but didn't actually receive for over a decade. Some commentators think this psalm, or at least its final form, comes from later — after the Babylonian exile, when Nebuchadnezzar's army had already leveled Jerusalem in 586 BC and the survivors had eventually returned to rebuild Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. If that's the setting, the "what can man do to me" isn't theoretical either — it's said by people who had watched their capital burned and their families marched off in chains, and who were still trying to rebuild a city surrounded by hostile neighbors who wanted the project to fail.

Either setting shares the same bones: real power, human power, arrayed against God's people, and a decision to trust that Yahweh's commitment outweighs it. This psalm eventually became so central to Jewish worship that it's almost certainly one of the psalms Jesus and his disciples sang together at the end of the Last Supper ( Matthew 26:30) — meaning the words "the LORD is on my side, I will not be afraid" may have been on Jesus' own lips hours before Gethsemane and the cross.

יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh), H3068 — this is the covenant name, sometimes rendered "Jehovah" or "Yahweh," rooted in the idea of self-existence — the One who simply is, who doesn't derive his being or his loyalty from anything outside himself Strong's. When the psalmist says "the LORD is for me," he's not invoking a generic deity for good luck. He's leaning his whole weight on the God who bound himself by promise to Israel and cannot be talked out of it.

יָרֵא (yârêʼ), H3372 — "to fear," but the range of this word runs from raw terror all the way to reverence and awe Strong's. That's worth sitting with: the same word that describes being afraid of an enemy is the word used for rightly fearing God. The psalmist is essentially saying his fear has found its proper object — and once it's aimed at God, it has nowhere left to go toward man.

אָדָם (ʼâdâm), H120 — "mankind," the same word used for humanity as a whole and for the first man, Adam Strong's. The psalmist isn't singling out one bully. He's naming the entire category of human threat — every scheme, every army, every rival — and setting it in the scale against Yahweh.

עָשָׂה (ʻâsâh), H6213 — "to do or make," a broad, ordinary verb for action Strong's. The question "what can man do to me" uses the most basic word for doing anything at all — which makes the question almost mocking in its plainness: strip away the threats and the noise, and what, concretely, is actually within human power here?

This whole psalm points to Jesus more directly than almost any other — it's the one that says "the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone" ( Psalm 118:22), which Jesus applies straight to himself ( Matthew 21:42) Matthew Henry. So when you read "the LORD is on my side, I will not be afraid" earlier in the same song, you're standing in the same psalm Jesus quoted about his own coming rejection and vindication.

Think about where Jesus actually said something like this. In Gethsemane, every human power that could possibly harm him — the temple guard, the Roman governor, the crowd, even his own exhaustion and dread — was closing in, and he still walked forward because the Father was for him, even though the cost was the cross itself. He didn't escape what man could do to him; he absorbed it, and three days later walked out of the grave having proven that no human power, not even death delivered by the state and the mob together, could actually finish him.

That's why the author of Hebrews takes this exact line — "the Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid, what can man do to me" — and hands it straight to suffering Christians ( Hebrews 13:6). It's not a promise that nothing bad will happen to you. David got chased through wilderness caves. Jesus got nailed to a cross. The promise is that man's worst move is never the last move, because the LORD who is for you has already proven, in Jesus, that he finishes what he starts ( Romans 8:31). The empty tomb is the final answer to "what can man do to me?" — their answer was death, and it wasn't enough.

Here's the honest question this verse puts to you: who or what actually has veto power over your peace right now? Name it. A boss who could fire you. A diagnosis. A person whose opinion of you feels like it could crush you if it turned. A financial cliff. This verse doesn't ask you to pretend those things aren't real or aren't scary. It asks you to weigh them against something bigger and decide, out loud, which one actually gets the final word.

That's the cost here — it's not comfortable. Saying "I will not be afraid" isn't a feeling you manufacture; it's a decision you make before the feeling catches up, sometimes while your hands are still shaking Tyndale. David didn't feel brave in the caves. He decided, again and again, to trust that God's commitment to him outweighed Saul's spear. That's not the absence of fear — that's fear meeting something bigger than itself and losing.

And notice the trap this verse quietly closes off: trusting in people instead of God. Your security has to be rooted somewhere that can't be threatened, fired, diagnosed, or bribed.

So today: name the specific fear. Then say the verse out loud, not as a slogan but as a decision. Let it cost you the comfort of your usual anxious grip on control.
