Psalms 113:3

Look at what this verse actually claims: not "the name of the Lord should be praised" or "will be praised someday" — it's a flat statement, "the name of the LORD is praised." Present tense. Picture the setting: ancient Israel lived surrounded by nations who worshipped the sun itself — Egypt had Ra, Babylon had Shamash, Canaanite religion was soaked in sun and storm gods. For an Israelite to sing "from where the sun rises to where it sets, the name of the LORD is praised" was a quiet act of defiance. The line is built on a merism — a Hebrew way of saying "everything" by naming the two extremes. Here it's מִזְרָח (mizrach, H4217), "sunrise, the east," paired with מָבוֹא (mabo, H3996), which literally means "entrance" or "going in," and by extension "sunset, the west" Strong's. Think of the sun as walking through a doorway at the end of the day — that's the picture buried in the word. East and west aren't just two directions; together they swallow up the whole horizon, everywhere the sun touches.

The verb is הָלַל (halal, H1984) — "to shine, to boast, to celebrate" Strong's. This is the root of "hallelujah." It's worth sitting with: the same word can mean "to shine" and "to praise" because in Hebrew thought, real praise isn't quiet, private appreciation — it's loud, visible, radiant, almost showing off. It's the word for a bride bragging about her groom in public. When the psalm says God's name is halal'd, it means people can't shut up about him.

And the object of all that noise is שֵׁם (shem, H8034), "name" — but in Hebrew, a name isn't just a label, it's a person's whole character, reputation, and authority packed into a word Strong's. To praise the name of יְהֹוָה (Yehovah, H3068) — the covenant name God gave himself, "the self-existent One" — isn't to praise a sound. It's to praise who he actually is: his faithfulness, his power, his character, on display for anyone paying attention.

This verse writes a check that the rest of the Bible spends its whole length cashing. In the psalmist's day, "from sunrise to sunset" was mostly aspiration — Israel worshipped the true God, but the nations around them mostly didn't. Malachi 1:11 picks up almost this exact phrase and turns it into a promise: "My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets." Something has to happen to close that gap between what's sung and what's true.

That something is Jesus. When he tells his disciples in Acts 1:8 that they'll be his witnesses "to the ends of the earth," and when Revelation pictures "every nation, tribe, people, and language" standing before the throne ( Revelation 7:9), you're watching Psalm 113:3 stop being poetry and start being history. And don't miss the shape of it: this psalm goes straight from "praised from sunrise to sunset" (v. 3) to "he lifts the needy from the ash heap" (v. 7). That's exactly the pattern of the incarnation — the God worthy of cosmic, universal praise is the same God who stooped low enough to be born in a feed trough and die on a Roman cross for people who couldn't lift themselves. The width of his praise and the depth of his humility are the same story, seen from two angles.

Here's the question this verse actually puts to you: if God's name is being praised from sunrise to sunset — everywhere, all the time — is your corner of the map included, or are you the gap in the map?

It's easy to read this verse as a nice fact about global Christianity and never let it touch your Tuesday. But the psalm isn't reporting statistics — it's an invitation, maybe even a rebuke. You live somewhere between one sunrise and one sunset every single day. The question isn't whether praise is theoretically happening on earth. It's whether it's happening in you, today, in the ordinary stretch of hours you're about to spend.

That costs something, because praise like this — the loud, unembarrassed, can't-shut-up-about-him kind that halal describes — doesn't fit well with the flat, managed, keep-your-head-down way most of us actually live. It means naming God out loud when it would be easier to stay quiet. It means your gratitude showing up on your face at work, not just in your journal. It means believing, on the days when your life feels small and unnoticed, that you're not outside the reach of this verse — you're one of the mouths it's talking about.

And if the God worth this kind of praise is the same God who stoops down for the poor and the barren (as this psalm goes on to say), then the honest move today isn't performance — it's honesty. Tell him where you actually are. Let today's sunrise-to-sunset be one more small, real place where his name gets said out loud, not because you've got it together, but because he's worth it either way.
