Psalms 111:10

Look at how this verse is built: it's the hinge of the whole psalm. Psalm 111 has been listing off everything God has done — his works, his covenant, his faithfulness, his redemption of his people — and now, at the very last verse, it turns and asks: so what do you do with all that? The answer isn't "figure it out" or "feel something." It's fear.

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." That word "beginning" (רֵאשִׁית, reshith) doesn't just mean step one in a sequence you can move past later — it means the root, the foundation, the place everything else grows out of Strong's. You don't graduate from fearing God once you get wise. Wisdom without that root isn't wisdom at all; it's just cleverness.

Notice the psalm doesn't stop at fear — it moves to doing: "all who follow His precepts gain rich understanding." In Hebrew thought, understanding isn't a prize you win by thinking hard; it's something you earn by obeying John Gill. You don't understand God by studying him from a safe distance — you understand him by doing what he says and finding out, from the inside, that he was right. That's an uncomfortable idea for anyone who thinks wisdom is mainly about IQ or information.

And then the last line swings back to where the psalm started: "His praise endures forever." This isn't really about you at all, in the end — the whole point of gaining wisdom is that it leads you back to praising him, forever. This psalm and the next one ( Psalm 112) are a matched pair — one about God's character, one about the person who fears him — and both are built as acrostics in Hebrew, each line starting with the next letter of the alphabet, like the psalmist is saying "from A to Z, this is the whole truth" Matthew Henry. Christians broadly agree on what this verse means; the friction, if there is any, is over whether "fear" here is mostly dread or mostly reverent love — and the psalm itself, drenched in praise and gratitude, tips the scale toward reverence, not terror.

Psalm 111 doesn't name its author or a specific crisis, which is part of the point — it was written for repeated, communal use, not for one moment in history. Jewish tradition tied it, along with Psalms 113–118, to the great festivals — Passover among them — where it would have been sung by a crowd, not read silently by an individual Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Picture a temple courtyard in Jerusalem, worshipers gathered for a pilgrim feast, voices going back and forth reciting this alphabet-song of praise, each line building the case for why God deserves it.

The acrostic form (each line beginning with the next Hebrew letter) tells you something about how ancient Israel thought about truth: it wasn't just to be believed, it was to be memorized, chanted, carried in the body and the mouth. A psalm like this functioned almost like a catechism you could sing — easy to remember, hard to shake loose once it was in you.

This verse's core line — "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom" — isn't unique to Psalm 111. It's nearly identical to Proverbs 9:10 and echoes Job 28:28 and Proverbs 1:7, which tells you this was a settled conviction across Israel's wisdom tradition, not one poet's private opinion. Whoever shaped Israel's worship believed this sentence belonged at the center of both their hymnbook (Psalms) and their wisdom literature (Proverbs, Job). That's worth noticing: the same truth shows up whether Israel is singing to God or teaching its children how to live. It wasn't abstract theology for scholars — it was meant to be the operating instruction for ordinary life: farming, raising kids, running a household, doing business honestly in a world that often didn't.

יִרְאָה (yirʼâh, H3374) — "fear." The root idea is reverence, not the terror you'd feel facing a threat, but the trembling respect you'd feel standing in front of someone so much bigger, holier, and more real than you that you finally see yourself accurately Strong's. It's the fear of someone you love and cannot manipulate.

רֵאשִׁית (rêʼshîyth, H7225) — "beginning," but with the sense of "first" or "chief" — it's the same word used for firstfruits, the first and best portion offered to God Strong's. That's a strong hint: fearing God isn't the entry fee to wisdom, it's the best and central part of it, not just its starting gate.

חׇכְמָה (chokmâh, H2451) — "wisdom." Not IQ or trivia, but the skill of living well — knowing how to actually navigate real life in line with how God built the world Strong's.

שֶׂכֶל (sekel, H7922) — translated "understanding" or "rich understanding." Interestingly, this word can also mean success Strong's — which is why John Gill notes some render it "good success," the practical payoff of a life aligned with God, not just abstract insight John Gill.

עָשָׂה (ʻâsâh, H6213) — "to do, to make." The verse doesn't say "all who believe his precepts" or "all who admire them" — it says all who do them Strong's. Understanding, in Hebrew, is downstream of obedience, not the other way around.

תְּהִלָּה (tᵉhillâh, H8416) — "praise," related to hallelujah itself Strong's — this is the sung, shouted kind of praise, and it "stands" (עָמַד, ʻamad) forever (עַד, ʻad) — permanently, without end Strong's.

This verse describes a life built on the fear of the Lord, worked out in obedience, ending in everlasting praise — and Jesus is the only person who ever lived that verse perfectly, from the inside, without a single crack. He is called, elsewhere, the one in whom "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" ( Colossians 2:3), and Paul says he "became to us wisdom from God" ( 1 Corinthians 1:30). If wisdom begins in the fear of the Lord, Jesus is wisdom itself standing in front of you.

But there's something even more striking here: Jesus didn't just teach the fear of the Lord, he lived it under pressure none of us will ever face — in Gethsemane, sweating blood, still praying "not my will, but yours be done" ( Luke 22:42). That's the fear of the Lord in its most costly form: reverence that holds even when obedience means the cross. Hebrews 5:7-9 says he "learned obedience through what he suffered" and was made perfect, becoming the source of salvation for all who obey him — an echo of exactly this psalm's pattern: fear leads to obedience, obedience leads to understanding, and understanding leads to glory.

And notice where the psalm ends — "His praise endures forever." That's not abstract. Revelation 5:12-13 shows the whole universe, every creature, praising the Lamb who was slain, forever. The fear-and-wisdom life this psalm describes has an actual destination, and it's a throne room where Jesus is praised without end. When Jesus tells his followers in John 13:17, "if you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them," he's speaking the same grammar as Psalm 111:10 — knowledge that doesn't turn into obedience isn't real wisdom yet. He is both the teacher of that truth and its living proof.

Here's the uncomfortable part: you probably think of yourself as someone who's figuring life out through information — reading the right books, getting the right advice, learning from your mistakes. This verse says something blunter: none of that becomes real wisdom until it's rooted in a trembling respect for God that actually changes what you do with your hands and your calendar.

Ask yourself honestly — do you fear God, or do you just believe things about him? Those aren't the same. You can hold a completely correct doctrine of God's holiness and still walk into your Tuesday untouched by it. Fear of the Lord, biblically, isn't a mood you work up. It's the quiet, constant awareness that you are not the center of the universe, that Someone infinitely more real than your anxieties, your ambitions, your reputation is actually watching, actually present, actually to be reckoned with.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: stop treating obedience as optional homework you'll get to once you feel more convinced. The verse says understanding comes after doing, not before. That means there are things God has already told you to do that you're waiting to feel ready for — and you'll never feel ready, because readiness isn't the prerequisite. Obedience is. Maybe it's forgiving someone you've been quietly keeping score against. Maybe it's telling the truth in a conversation where a small lie would be so much easier. Maybe it's simply stopping and being still long enough to remember whose world this actually is.

You were made to end in praise that never runs out. That's not a threat — that's an invitation into something bigger than your current, cramped little life.

• Give me a heart that trembles rightly at your holiness, not out of dread, but out of love that takes you seriously.
• Let my life build toward praise that never ends — remind me today that this isn't the whole story, just the beginning of it.
• Where I've settled for cleverness instead of wisdom, root me again in you.

• Is there a command of God you understand perfectly well but have simply decided not to obey yet? Why?
