Psalms 10:17

Look at the tense shift first — that's the whole engine of this verse. "You have heard" is past. "You will strengthen... You will incline" is future. David is standing in the middle, looking backward at a prayer already answered and forward to what that answer guarantees. He's not waiting to see if God will listen. Notice what God hears: not eloquence, not a polished argument, but "the desire" — the raw want, the ache, of "the humble." That Hebrew word for humble carries the sense of someone pressed down, low, needy — not primarily someone with a nice attitude, but someone who has run out of leverage Strong's. This is a person with nothing to bargain with. And that's exactly who God bends toward.

Then comes the part easy to skip past: "You will strengthen their hearts." God doesn't just hear the prayer and grant the request — he first does something inside the person praying. He steadies them, fixes them, gives their inner life some backbone before he even answers. Then, only after that inward work, "You will incline your ear" — God tilts his head down toward the ground to catch what's being whispered.

This verse sits at the very end of Psalm 10, a psalm that spends sixteen verses complaining that the wicked seem to run wild while God "hides" ( Psalm 10:1). David has just been staring at injustice and asking why God looks absent. Verse 17 is the turn — the moment confidence breaks through the complaint Matthew Henry. Commentators differ mainly on whose desire this is (some read it messianically, about longing for God's kingdom to come John Gill), but most read it simply and personally: the cry of anyone crushed and helpless before God.

Psalm 10 is attributed to David, likely composed sometime in the 10th century BC, though the psalm itself gives no title or historical heading in Hebrew — unusual for this section of the Psalter, which has led many readers (including the ancient Greek translators who made this psalm) to treat Psalm 9 and 10 as one continuous poem split into two Matthew Henry. Whether or not that's original, the content of Psalm 10 makes sense read that way: it completes a single acrostic pattern, moving letter by letter through the Hebrew alphabet the way an anxious mind moves through every angle of a problem.

The world behind this psalm is not abstract theology — it's a village world where the powerful literally get away with murder. Verses earlier in this psalm (10:2, 10:8-10) describe a predator: a man who "lurks in ambush," who "murders the innocent," who is arrogant because he's decided "God has forgotten" (10:11). This is the world of the ancient Near East where a king or wealthy landowner could seize a widow's field, crush a poor farmer's family, and face no court, no police, no accountability — because he was the law in his region. The poor had no lawyer, no appeal, nothing but a cry lifted toward heaven.

That's the audience this verse was written for and by: people who watched injustice succeed, verse after verse, and had nowhere else to take their fury and grief but prayer. Verse 17 isn't written from comfort. It's written from someone who has just spent sixteen verses staring at unpunished cruelty and chooses, at the end, to trust that the God who seems silent is actually keeping score and already listening.

The word for humble is עָנָו (ʻânâv, H6035) — someone bowed down, pressed low, whether by poverty, oppression, or crushed circumstances Strong's. It's not a compliment about someone's personality; it's a description of position — flat on the ground with nothing left to stand on but God.

Desire is תַּאֲוָה (taʼăvâh, H8378) — a longing, a craving, something you ache for Strong's. This isn't a formal petition read off a list. It's the kind of want that keeps you up at night.

The verb translated "strengthen" is כּוּן (kûwn, H3559), whose root idea is to make something stand upright, firm, established — like setting a post so it won't wobble Strong's. God doesn't just comfort the humble person's feelings; he sets their heart — לֵב (lêb, H3820), the Hebrew word for the whole inner self, will and mind and feeling together — on solid footing Strong's.

And "incline your ear" comes from קָשַׁב (qâshab, H7181), which literally means to prick up the ears, to stiffen them toward a sound — the picture of an animal going alert at the faintest noise Strong's. Paired with אֹזֶן (ʼôzen, H241, "ear"), the image is vivid: the LORD (יְהֹוָה, H3068) isn't distracted. He's leaning in.

This verse describes exactly the kind of person Jesus said was blessed: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" ( Matthew 5:3). The ʻânâv of Psalm 10 — the crushed, the low, the ones who've run out of leverage — is the same person Jesus points to at the start of the Sermon on the Mount and says: you're the one heaven belongs to.

But go further. In Jesus, this pattern isn't just described — it's embodied. Philippians 2:8 says he "humbled himself" all the way to death on a cross. He didn't just teach about the humble; he became one of them, entered their position, took their crushing onto himself. And Hebrews 5:7 tells us that during his life he "offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears... and he was heard because of his reverent submission." The Son himself prayed as one of the humble, and the Father heard him — the same pattern this psalm promises, now lived out at the deepest level by God himself in flesh.

And there's a straight line to 1 Peter 3:12, quoting Psalm 34:15 almost word for word: "the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are inclined to their prayer." Peter is writing to Christians under real pressure, telling them the same thing David told himself: God is not deaf, not absent, not indifferent — he's leaning in.

James 4:6 draws the final thread tight: "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." That's the whole logic of Psalm 10:17 compressed into one line, and it's a logic that runs straight through the gospel — the proud, self-sufficient, and powerful get resisted; the low, needy, and desperate get grace. Jesus is where that logic becomes a person you can actually go to.

Here's the cost this verse asks of you: admit you're low. Not humble in the sense of being modest and polite — low in the sense of having nothing left to negotiate with. This verse isn't for the person who has it together and is asking God to bless their plans. It's for the person who has been ground down — by injustice, by grief, by their own failure, by a world that doesn't seem to notice or care — and has nothing left but a raw, wordless ache.

That's uncomfortable, because most of us would rather present God with a slightly improved version of ourselves. We edit the prayer. We clean it up. But David isn't editing anything in Psalm 10. He spent sixteen verses furious and afraid, watching cruelty win, wondering if God had checked out. And that's the prayer God heard — not a tidy one, a desperate one.

So ask yourself where you're pretending you're not desperate. Where have you decided God's too busy, or your need is too small, or too embarrassing, or too far gone to bring to him straight? This verse says God doesn't just tolerate that kind of prayer — he leans his ear toward it. He tilts his head down to catch the whisper of someone who has nothing left but longing.

And here's the harder part: he doesn't promise to fix your circumstances first. He promises to steady your heart first — to make you stand firm before he changes anything around you. That might mean the answer to your prayer today isn't the crisis lifting, but your inner life getting a spine it didn't have yesterday. Can you trust that order? Can you let God fix you before he fixes your situation?

• Teach me to trust the order you work in — steadying my heart first, even when I want the outward rescue first.

• Who in your life is currently in the position of "the humble" — crushed, without leverage — and what would it cost you to become the answer to their prayer?
