Psalms 100:3

Read it slow: "Know that the LORD is God." Not "feel," not "hope," not "guess" — know. This is a command, and it's aimed at your mind before it ever touches your feelings. Then comes the reason: "It is He who made us, and we are His." Notice the order — God's ownership of you isn't a conclusion you reach after you've proven your worth to him. It's flat-out fact, rooted in the simple truth that he made you. You didn't make yourself. Nobody does.

Then the psalm shifts pictures: "we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture." Two images stacked on top of each other — a nation under a king, and a flock under a shepherd. Both say the same thing from different angles: you belong to someone, and that someone is responsible for you. Sheep don't feed themselves, don't protect themselves, don't find their own way home. Here's what's easy to miss: this isn't a private devotional thought. Psalm 100 opens with "Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth" — this is a summons to worship, meant to be sung out loud by a crowd walking into the Temple gates. The "know" isn't quiet contemplation; it's a truth the whole congregation declares together before they even get to praising. You can't skip past verse 3 to get to verse 4's thanksgiving. The joy is built on the knowing.

There's a small textual note worth naming honestly: some ancient Hebrew manuscripts read "and not we ourselves" instead of "and we are His" — same sound in Hebrew, different meaning. Both readings say something true (we didn't make ourselves; we belong to him), and most modern translations, including this one, follow "we are His" John Gill. This psalm sits near the end of a whole run of "enthronement" psalms (93–100) celebrating God as king over all the earth, not just Israel — which is why it opens with "all the earth," a detail that matters more than it might seem.

We don't know exactly who wrote Psalm 100 or when — it has no author listed in the Hebrew text, unlike many psalms attributed to David. What we do know is its job: it's a "psalm of thanksgiving," almost certainly written for use in the Temple in Jerusalem, meant to be sung by worshippers as they physically walked through the gates into the courts where sacrifices were offered. Picture it like the entrance hymn at the start of a service — except here the whole point of the song is to remind the crowd, out loud, who they're walking in to meet.

This psalm belongs to a cluster of psalms (93 through 100) that all celebrate God as king over the whole earth, not just over Israel. That's significant. Israel's neighbors — Egypt, Babylon, the Canaanite city-states — each had their own tribal gods, deities who supposedly ruled one patch of land or one people group and no further. Israel's claim was different and, in the ancient world, radical: their God wasn't a local deity competing with other gods for territory. He was the God, full stop, the maker of everyone, and every nation on earth owed him worship whether they knew it or not. That's why the psalm opens by calling "all the earth," not just Israel, to shout for joy.

The line "we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture" would have landed with particular weight for a people whose national story was full of literal shepherding — their ancestors were herdsmen, David himself was a shepherd before he was king, and kings throughout the ancient Near East were commonly described as shepherds of their people. So when the psalm says God is the shepherd, it's making a political claim as much as a tender one: whatever human king sits on Israel's throne, the real King, the real Shepherd, is the LORD himself. If you were an Israelite worshipper singing this while walking into the Temple, you were rehearsing, out loud, exactly whose kingdom you actually lived in.

The verse opens with יָדַע (yâdaʻ, H3045) — "know." This isn't just head-knowledge in Hebrew; the word carries the sense of knowing by experience, by seeing, by close relationship — the same word used for a husband and wife "knowing" each other Strong's. So the command isn't "believe a fact about God" so much as "recognize him for who he actually is, the way you'd recognize someone you've come face to face with."

Then יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) — the LORD, God's personal covenant name, rooted in the idea of the self-existent, eternal One Strong's. This is paired with אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430), the general word for God, often used as a kind of superlative — the God above all so-called gods Strong's. Putting the two together — "the LORD [Yahweh], he is God [Elohim]" — is a deliberate collision of Israel's personal covenant name for God with the universal word for deity. It's saying: the God who has a name and a relationship with you is also the one true supreme God over everything.

The verb עָשָׂה (ʻâsâh, H6213), "he made us," is the ordinary Hebrew word for making or doing — broad and unadorned, but here it's doing heavy lifting: your existence is his handiwork, plain and simple Strong's.

Finally, צֹאן (tsôʼn, H6629), flock, and מִרְעִית (mirʻîyth, H4830), pasturage or the flock being fed Strong's — together painting the picture not of sheep left to wander, but sheep being actively fed, tended, kept.

This verse asks you to know that the LORD is God — and John's Gospel takes that exact word "know" and drops Jesus right into the middle of it: "this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent" ( John 17:3). The knowing this psalm demands isn't finished until it lands on the face of Christ. First John goes even further, calling Jesus himself "the true God and eternal life" ( 1 John 5:20) — the very language of Psalm 100:3 wrapped around a person.

Then there's the shepherd picture. "We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture" isn't a throwaway metaphor in Scripture — it's a thread that runs the whole way through, and Jesus picks it up and claims it for himself: "I am the good shepherd" ( John 10:11). Where Psalm 100 says God made his people and tends them like a flock, Jesus says he lays down his life for the sheep — the shepherding isn't just feeding and guiding anymore, it's dying to save. That's a depth of care the psalmist couldn't have fully imagined, though he was pointing right at it.

And the making — "It is He who made us" — finds its New Testament echo in Ephesians 2:10: "we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works." You were made once by God's hand at creation; if you belong to Christ, you're remade — his workmanship a second time, formed for a purpose. The psalm's confession that you don't make yourself, you don't own yourself, becomes in the New Testament the confession that you were bought at a price ( 1 Corinthians 6:20) — the same truth, but now it costs God something specific: the cross. Psalm 100:3 is a quiet echo here more than a direct prophecy, but it's an echo that gets louder and louder the closer you get to Jesus.

Here's the cost this verse asks of you: it wants you to stop pretending you're self-made. Every instinct in you — especially if you live somewhere that prizes independence, hustle, "I built this" — pushes back against the idea that you are, at bottom, someone else's. But that's exactly what the psalm makes you say out loud: He made me. I am His. I am a sheep.

Sheep is not a flattering word. Sheep are not clever. They wander into danger, they can't find water on their own, they panic and scatter, they need someone else watching over them or they die. If that stings a little, good — it's supposed to. The psalm isn't insulting you; it's diagnosing you. And then it hands you the cure in the same breath: you belong to a shepherd who made you and feeds you.

So ask yourself honestly today: where in your life are you living like you're self-owned? Where have you quietly decided that your time, your body, your money, your choices are yours to do with as you please, answerable to no one? This verse says otherwise, and it says it as fact, not opinion. The knowing it demands isn't abstract theology — it's the kind of knowing that changes how you spend your Tuesday. If you're truly his sheep, tended and fed, then the anxious grasping — for control, for security, for proving yourself — can actually loosen. You don't have to be your own shepherd. You were never meant to be. Let that be relief, not just correction.
