Job 5:12

Read this verse slowly, and notice who's talking. This isn't God speaking — it's Eliphaz, the first of Job's three friends, in the middle of his opening speech to Job. He's just spent several verses insisting that God is the one who does great, unsearchable things ( Job 5:9), gives rain to the earth ( Job 5:10), and lifts up the lowly ( Job 5:11). Verse 12 continues that list: God is the one who takes clever people's schemes and makes them fall apart in their hands. The picture is almost comic — a "crafty" person (the word carries a whiff of slyness, like a fox) works out an elaborate plan, and it just... doesn't work. Their hands, full of tools and plots, come up empty Strong's.

On its own, this is a true and beautiful statement about God — you'll see it echoed almost word for word in Psalm 33:10 and Isaiah 8:10. The trouble is where Eliphaz is going with it. He's building a theology of retribution: good things happen to good people, bad things happen to bad people, and God personally sabotages every scheming, wicked person's plans. He's laying groundwork to eventually accuse Job — a man who's lost everything — of having secretly been one of the "crafty" ones whose plans God has now demolished. That's the tension running through the whole book of Job: true statements about God, wielded like a knife against a suffering man who doesn't deserve it.

So here's the disagreement worth naming: some readers treat every word from Job's friends as inspired truth because it's in the Bible. But at the end of the book ( Job 42:7), God tells Eliphaz directly that he has not spoken the truth about God. The words can be right and the use of them can still be wrong Matthew Henry.

Job is one of the hardest books in the Bible to pin to a calendar. There's no mention of Israel, the Law, the Temple, or any king by name — the story is set in the land of Uz, likely somewhere east of Israel, possibly near Edom, and it reads like it's describing patriarchal times, similar to Abraham's era, roughly the early second millennium BC. But most scholars think the book was written down later — some point to the time of Solomon (10th century BC), others to the period during or after the Babylonian exile (6th century BC), when Israel itself was suffering catastrophically and needed exactly this kind of unflinching conversation about why the righteous suffer.

Whenever it was written, the world it reflects is one where wisdom literature — collections of proverbs, arguments, and speeches about how life actually works — was a shared currency across the ancient Near East. Eliphaz speaks like a seasoned wisdom teacher, quoting what sounds like inherited proverbial material ( Job 5:12-16 reads almost like block of memorized sayings). His argument would have sounded utterly reasonable to his culture and to ours: the moral universe is orderly, God rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked, cause leads to effect. That's not a fringe idea — it's common sense in almost every culture, ancient or modern.

What makes Job's situation so explosive is that he doesn't fit the formula. He was righteous ( Job 1:1 says so explicitly, and God himself confirms it) and he is suffering catastrophically anyway. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar spend thirty-some chapters trying to force Job's situation back into their tidy formula rather than letting the formula crack. Verse 12 is one small brick in that wall they're building.

The verb at the heart of this verse is פָּרַר (pârar, H6565) — "to break up, frustrate, violate." It's a vivid, almost violent word: picture snapping a stick or breaking a covenant. God doesn't gently redirect the schemer's plans; he breaks them Strong's.

What gets broken is מַחֲשָׁבָה (machăshâbâh, H4284) — "a plan, contrivance, intention." The word can mean a plot for evil or a plan for good; here, paired with "crafty," it clearly leans toward scheming Strong's. The schemer himself is עָרוּם (ʻârûwm, H6175) — "cunning," almost always with a negative edge in the Old Testament. It's the same root used to describe the serpent in Genesis 3:1 as "more crafty than any other beast." That's not a coincidence worth ignoring — craftiness in the Bible often has a snakelike quality to it.

And then there's the phrase "their hands find no success" — literally their יָד (yâd, H3027), "hand," fails to accomplish (עָשָׂה, ʻâsâh, H6213, "to do or make") anything of תּוּשִׁיָּה (tûwshîyâh, H8454). This last word is fascinating and hard to translate — it means something like "substance," "real, lasting accomplishment," as opposed to something that just looks impressive but evaporates Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. So the point isn't just that the schemer fails to get what he wanted — it's that nothing real comes of all his cleverness. He built on sand.

Here's where this gets sharp rather than soft. The greatest "scheme of the crafty" in the whole Bible is the plot to kill Jesus — chief priests and elders "plotted together to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him" ( Matthew 26:4). It was crafty. It used betrayal, bribery, false testimony, a rigged trial, political pressure. By every human measure, it worked — Jesus died.

And that's exactly where Job 5:12 gets turned inside out and then right-side up again. The scheme wasn't ultimately frustrated by being stopped — it was frustrated by being swallowed. Paul says it plainly in 1 Corinthians 2:8 — if the rulers of this age had understood what they were doing, "they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." Their cunning plan to erase Jesus became the very means God used to save the world. Their hands accomplished something, all right — just not what they thought. The resurrection is God's ultimate "their hands find no success" — three days after the tomb was sealed and guarded by the cleverest security measure Rome could arrange, the whole plot collapsed into an empty grave.

You see this pattern earlier too — Herod's scheme to kill Peter in Acts 12:11 gets undone by an angel in the night, and Peter says almost exactly what Eliphaz says here: "the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me... from everything the Jewish people were anticipating." That's not a coincidence; it's the same God, still doing the same thing.

So this verse is true — truer than Eliphaz even knew, because he was thinking about people like Job's supposed hidden sins, and God had something far bigger in mind: the day the most successful-looking scheme in human history would become the hinge on which the world turned toward salvation instead of ruin.

Here's the uncomfortable part: this verse is true, and it is also being weaponized in the very chapter you're reading. Eliphaz isn't wrong about God's character — he's wrong about who gets to stand where. He assumes that if you're the one suffering, you must be one of the "crafty" ones whose plans God is dismantling. Before you nod along with verse 12 too quickly, ask whether you've ever done what Eliphaz did — looked at someone in pain and quietly built a theory about what they must have done to deserve it. That's a cheap way to protect yourself from the terrifying truth that suffering sometimes falls on the innocent, for reasons you can't audit.

But don't throw the verse out because Eliphaz misused it. There is real comfort here, if you let it be comfort and not a weapon. If you are scheming — cutting corners, manipulating someone, building your security on a lie, or angling for advantage at someone else's expense — this verse is a warning worth taking personally. God is not impressed by cunning. He has a long history of letting clever plans fall apart in the schemer's own hands, and that includes yours and mine when we get crafty instead of honest.

And if you're on the other end — if someone else's scheming has hurt you, if you're the "needy" this chapter later says God rescues ( Job 5:15-16) — this verse asks you to actually believe, not just recite, that no plot against you outlasts God. That's costly faith. It means waiting instead of scheming back. It means trusting God's timing over your own countermove. Which is harder for you today: giving up a scheme, or trusting God to undo one against you?

• Teach me to trust your timing instead of building my own countermove when I feel threatened or wronged.
• Thank you that the greatest scheme in history — the plot to kill your Son — became the doorway to my rescue.
