Esther 10:3

This is the last verse of the whole book, and it reads almost like a closing credit — but pay attention to what it chooses to highlight. Mordecai is "second only to King Xerxes." That phrase (mishneh, meaning a duplicate or second-in-rank) is the exact same kind of language used for Joseph in Egypt ( Genesis 41:40) and Daniel in Babylon ( Daniel 5:29) — a foreigner, an exile, a member of a conquered people, standing at the right hand of the most powerful man on earth. That's not an accident; it's a pattern you're meant to notice.

But look closer at how the verse measures Mordecai's greatness. It doesn't say he was great because of his wealth, his palace, or his power to crush enemies. It says he was "preeminent among the Jews," "highly favored by his many kinsmen," and — this is the real payoff — he spent his position "seeking the good of his people and speaking peace to all his countrymen." Three different Hebrew verbs and nouns pile up here to describe a man who used power for others, not for himself Tyndale. Compare this to Haman, just a few chapters earlier, who used his exact same rank to build a gallows for his personal enemy ( Esther 3:2, Esther 5:11-12). Same office. Opposite heart.

Where this sits in the story: the whole book of Esther has been building toward this — a hidden, exiled, threatened people who get an unlikely rescuer in an unlikely place, and the book ends not with vengeance but with a man devoted to his people's welfare and peace. One thing worth naming honestly: Christian traditions disagree on how much of the Esther story is even "complete" as it stands — Catholic and Orthodox Bibles include several additional chapters (the "Greek additions") that explicitly mention God and prayer, which are absent from the Hebrew text and from most Protestant Bibles Adam ClarkeMatthew Henry. That's a real difference in canon, not just translation.

The book of Esther is set in the Persian Empire during the reign of Xerxes I (called Ahasuerus in Hebrew), who ruled from 486 to 465 BC — so this is roughly a century after the Babylonians had destroyed Jerusalem and dragged the Jewish people off into exile, and decades after Cyrus the Persian had allowed some of them to go home and rebuild. Not everyone went back. Huge numbers of Jews stayed scattered across the Persian Empire, from India to Ethiopia ( Esther 1:1), living as a minority under a foreign king. Esther and Mordecai are part of that diaspora community — Jews who never returned to the land, who built lives in the empire that had swallowed their nation.

The book itself was almost certainly written sometime after these events, likely in the late Persian period, for Jewish readers living under foreign rule who needed to know: even when God's name is never once mentioned in the story (and it isn't — Esther is famous for this), he is still working underneath the surface of pagan politics, court intrigue, and palace gossip to protect his people.

By chapter 10, the crisis is over. Haman, the king's second-in-command, had engineered a plot to exterminate every Jew in the empire ( Esther 3:8-13); Esther risked her life to expose him; Haman was executed on his own gallows; and Mordecai was elevated to the very position Haman had vacated. This closing verse is the empire's official record, so to speak — the kind of thing you'd find in the Persian court chronicles (the verse even gestures at this, mentioning that Mordecai's greatness is written in "the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia," v. 2). It's a quiet, administrative-sounding sentence doing enormous theological work: a people marked for genocide now has a friend in the highest seat in the land.

The key phrase is mishneh la-melek — Mordecai was מִשְׁנֶה (mishneh, H4932) to מֶלֶךְ (melek, H4428) Xerxes. Mishneh literally means a "duplicate" or "copy" — the same word used for a second copy of a document — and by extension it came to mean the second-in-command, the man whose authority mirrors the king's own Strong's. It's the identical structural idea behind Joseph's rise in Egypt and Daniel's "third highest ruler" title in Babylon ( Daniel 5:29) — a repeated biblical shape, not a one-off.

Then there's דָּרַשׁ (dârash, H1875), translated "seeking" — Mordecai "sought" the good of his people. This verb's root sense is to tread a path, to pursue something relentlessly, even to worship. It's active, not passive; Mordecai isn't accidentally beneficial, he's chasing his people's welfare on purpose Strong's.

And טוֹב (ṭôwb, H2896), "good," paired with שָׁלוֹם (shâlôwm, H7965), "peace" — that rich word meaning wholeness, safety, health, prosperity, not just an absence of conflict. Mordecai "speaks shalom" to his kinsmen (אָח, ʼâch, H251, "brother" — used for the widest sense of kinship). He isn't just tolerating his people; he's declaring their flourishing, using his position to pronounce blessing over the very community that was almost wiped out three chapters earlier. Even his name, מׇרְדְּכַי (Mordᵉkay, H4782), is of foreign origin — a small reminder that God's man here carries a Babylonian-sounding name inside a Persian court, fully embedded in exile, and still fully devoted to his own people Strong's.

Mordecai standing "second only to the king," using that borrowed authority not for himself but "seeking the good of his people," is one of those quiet echoes the Old Testament keeps handing you — not a direct prophecy, but a shape that gets filled in fully later. You've seen this shape before: Joseph, second to Pharaoh, using his power to save the very brothers who sold him into slavery ( Genesis 41:40); Daniel, third in Babylon, faithful in a foreign court. Each one is a man exalted to the right hand of an earthly throne who then spends that position rescuing and blessing people who did nothing to deserve it.

Jesus is where that pattern finally stops being an echo and becomes the thing itself. Philippians 2:9-11 says God exalted him and gave him the name above every name — not second to any king, but seated "at the right hand" of the Father himself ( Hebrews 1:3), the position Mordecai's office only gestures toward. And what does Jesus do with that supreme authority? Exactly what Mordecai did in miniature: he seeks the good of his people and speaks peace over them. Ephesians 2:14-17 says Christ himself is our peace, and that he came and "preached peace" to those who were far off and those who were near — the same word-pair, seeking good and speaking peace, now spoken not by a Persian vizier but by the risen Lord to people who, like the exiled Jews under Haman's decree, were once condemned and without hope.

The difference is that Mordecai's rescue was for one nation in one empire for one generation. Jesus' peace-speaking reaches every tribe and tongue, and it isn't limited by politics or palace favor — it's guaranteed by his own blood ( Colossians 1:20). Where Mordecai used influence, Jesus used his life. That's not a small upgrade; it's the whole difference between a picture and the reality it was pointing to.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts in front of you: what do you do when you finally get some power? Maybe not "second to the king" power — but a promotion, a platform, a little influence over other people's lives, a seat at a table you used to only clean. Mordecai had every reason to spend his new authority settling scores. Haman was dead, but Haman's sons and allies were still around. Instead, the record says he spent his position doing two things: seeking good for people who couldn't repay him, and speaking peace over people who were still afraid.

That's the cost this verse asks of you. Not "be nice." Be deliberate about using whatever leverage you have — your job title, your reputation, your money, your voice in a room — for somebody else's flourishing rather than your own comfort or your own scores to settle. It's so much easier to use power the way Haman did: build the gallows, protect the ego, secure the win. Mordecai's greatness wasn't that he got the job. It's what he did once he had it.

And notice this verse doesn't say Mordecai was loved by everyone in the empire — it says he was loved by "his many kinsmen." He never stopped identifying with the vulnerable people he came from, even after he'd been dressed in royal robes. Ask yourself honestly: when you rise, do you remember where you came from, or do you quietly start distancing yourself from the people who need you? Real power, the kind this book is commending, doesn't forget its own people on the way up.

• Lord, wherever you've given me even a small measure of influence — at work, at home, in my community — show me if I'm using it to protect myself or to serve others.
• Father, I confess the times I've used my position the way Haman did, not the way Mordecai did. Forgive me and change my instincts.
• Thank you for Jesus, seated at your right hand, who uses his supreme power not to condemn me but to speak peace over me. Let that peace actually sink in today.
• Give me the same relentless, active pursuit of others' good that Mordecai had — not passive kindness, but real, deliberate seeking.
• Keep me from forgetting the people and the place I came from as you give me more.

• Think of the last time you had leverage over someone — a decision, a recommendation, a bit of authority. Did you use it for them or for you?
• Who are "your kinsmen" — the people you belong to, came from, or are responsible for — that you've quietly stopped looking out for since things got easier for you?
• Mordecai "sought" peace; it didn't just happen to him. What would it look like to actively pursue someone's good this week rather than just wishing them well?
• Where in your life is there a Haman — someone whose power you resent — and are you tempted to become just like them the moment the tables turn?
• Does the idea of Jesus using his total authority to speak peace over you feel real, or does it still feel like something you have to earn?
