Ezra 7:10

Look at the order of the three verbs in this verse, because the order is the whole sermon: Ezra set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, to practice it, and to teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel. Study, then obey, then teach. Not study-then-teach with obedience skipped. Not teaching first because he's smart and wants an audience. The sequence matters — you don't get to hand people truth you haven't let touch your own life first Tyndale.

Notice too what's easy to miss: it says he "set his heart." This isn't a job he fell into or a talent he happened to have. It's a decision, made deliberately, aimed like an arrow. The Hebrew picture behind "set" is something like fixing a pole upright so it stands firm and doesn't wobble Strong's — this was Ezra's fixed orientation, not a passing mood.

This verse sits at a hinge point in the story of Ezra-Nehemiah. The exiles have already returned from Babylon and rebuilt the Temple (that happened chapters earlier, under Zerubbabel and Jeshua), but now, decades later, a second wave is coming home under Persian King Artaxerxes, and Ezra is the man leading it. Verse 10 is essentially his biographical thesis statement — the narrator pausing to tell you why this priest-scribe matters before describing what he'll do with his royal commission in the rest of the chapter Matthew Henry.

Where might Christians read this differently? Some traditions emphasize Ezra primarily as a picture of pastoral or priestly vocation — a model for clergy specifically. Others read it as a template for every believer's discipleship, not just religious professionals. Both readings are defensible; the text itself doesn't restrict "study, obey, teach" to an ordained class — but Ezra himself was a priest, so the vocational reading has real footing too John Gill.

The book of Ezra covers roughly 538–458 BC, and this particular verse belongs to the second half of the story, around 458 BC, during the reign of the Persian king Artaxerxes I. Here's the backdrop: about a century earlier, the Babylonian empire had crushed Jerusalem, torn down Solomon's Temple, and dragged the Jewish population off into exile. Then Persia conquered Babylon, and Persian policy — unlike Babylon's — allowed conquered peoples to return home and rebuild their temples, partly as a strategy to keep subject nations loyal and stable. A first wave of Jewish exiles went back under Zerubbabel decades before Ezra and rebuilt the Temple, but the community in Jerusalem was struggling — spiritually thin, intermarried with pagan neighbors, without solid teaching in God's law.

Ezra was a priest living comfortably in Babylon, part of the Jewish community that had stayed behind after the first return. He wasn't just any priest — he was a "scribe," meaning he'd made himself an expert copyist and interpreter of the Torah, the first five books of Moses Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. When King Artaxerxes granted him an extraordinary royal commission — funding, authority, and permission to appoint judges — Ezra used it to lead a second group of exiles back to Jerusalem, carrying gold and silver for the Temple and, more importantly, carrying the law itself back into a community that had largely lost touch with it.

Picture the practical need: a people scattered for generations, raised under foreign rule, whose grandparents had spoken a different language and worshiped surrounded by other gods. Someone had to know the Torah well enough to read it, explain it, and apply it to real disputes — property, marriage, worship, justice. That's the vacuum Ezra was stepping into. He wasn't writing academic commentary; he was rebuilding the moral and spiritual infrastructure of a nation from scratch.

The verb behind "set his heart" is כּוּן (kûwn, H3559) — its root idea is to make something stand upright, fixed, established, not wobbling Strong's. Paired with לֵבָב (lêbâb, H3824), "heart" — the innermost self, not just emotion but will and mind together — you get a picture of Ezra deliberately planting his whole inner life in one direction, like driving a post into the ground so it can't be knocked over.

The word for "study" is דָּרַשׁ (dârash, H1875), which literally means to tread a path repeatedly, to search something out relentlessly — it's used elsewhere for seeking God himself Strong's. This isn't casual reading; it's the same intensity you'd use hunting for something you desperately need to find.

תּוֹרָה (tôwrâh, H8451), "law," comes from a root meaning "to teach" or "to point the way" — it's instruction, direction, not merely legal code Strong's. And the pairing at the end, חֹק (chôq, H2706, "statute" — a fixed decree) and מִשְׁפָּט (mishpâṭ, H4941, "ordinance" — a judicial ruling, a verdict) Strong's, shows Ezra teaching both God's unchanging commands and how they play out in real, messy human cases.

Finally, notice עָשָׂה (ʻâsâh, H6213), "to do" or "to practice" — the most ordinary Hebrew verb for "make" or "do" Strong's. There's nothing exotic about it; that's the point. Obedience isn't mystical, it's just doing the plain thing the text says.

Ezra gives you a portrait of what it looks like to love God's word with your whole self — but he's also, quietly, a shadow of someone greater. Deuteronomy 33:10 says a priest's job is to teach God's ordinances to Jacob; Malachi 2:7 says the same — a priest's lips should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth. Ezra fulfills that priestly calling about as well as anyone in the Old Testament does. And yet even Ezra is a servant of a law he didn't write, teaching statutes he didn't originate, always one step removed from the source.

Jesus is different. When he opens his mouth in the Sermon on the Mount, he doesn't say "thus says the LORD, study, obey, and teach this" — he says "You have heard it said... but I say to you" ( Matthew 5:21-22 and following). He isn't a scribe expounding someone else's law; he is, John tells us, the Word itself become flesh ( John 1:14). Ezra set his heart to study the Torah; Jesus is what the Torah was pointing to the whole time.

And where Ezra's sequence was study-then-obey-then-teach, Jesus lived it perfectly and without gap — he is the only teacher in Scripture whose life never once needed to catch up to his teaching. Matthew 7:24 — the one who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man building on rock — that's Jesus applying Ezra's own pattern to himself as the ultimate authority behind it. When Jesus commissions Paul, and Paul later charges Timothy to "preach the word... reprove, rebuke, encourage" ( 2 Timothy 4:2), that whole chain of teachers stretching back through Ezra to Moses finds its center and its power source in Christ, who doesn't just hand down the law but writes it on hearts by his Spirit (see Jeremiah 31:33, which the New Testament applies to what Jesus accomplishes). Ezra prepared his heart to seek God's law; Jesus is the one who makes that kind of heart possible for the rest of us.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: which comes first in your life, knowing or doing? Most of us secretly want the order reversed from Ezra's — we want to teach and be known as wise before we've actually let the thing change us. Or we want to study endlessly, collect insight, feel spiritually literate, and quietly skip the "practice it" step because that's the part that costs something Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Ezra didn't leave a comfortable, established Jewish community in Babylon and cross a dangerous desert with a royal commission and a bunch of vulnerable pilgrims because he liked studying scrolls. He did it because the study had already turned into obedience, and the obedience had turned into a burden for other people who didn't know what he knew. That's the pattern: real study leads to real obedience, and real obedience makes you unable to keep your mouth shut around people who need what you've found.

So ask yourself honestly: is there a gap in your life between what you know about God and what you actually do? Not what you feel about him, not what you believe intellectually — what you do, this week, with your time, your money, your anger, your habits. That gap is the target of this verse. The cost this verse asks of you isn't dramatic — it's daily. It's choosing to actually read the thing before you post an opinion about it. It's obeying the verse you already understand instead of hunting for a new one to admire. And then, once it's cost you something real, being willing to say what you've learned out loud to someone who needs it.

• Give me the same order: let me study your word, obey it first in secret, and only then trust me to speak it to anyone else.
• Show me one specific place this week where I know your instruction but haven't practiced it, and give me courage to close that gap.
• Raise up in me a genuine hunger — not obligation — to search your word the way Ezra searched it, relentlessly, like something I actually need to find.
