II Chronicles 15:7

Look at where this sentence sits: a prophet named Azariah has just walked out to meet King Asa and his army as they come home from battle, arms full of plunder, hearts probably a little puffed up with victory. Azariah tells them God has been with them because they sought him — and then, before anyone can relax, he pivots: "But as for you, be strong." That "but" matters. Winning one battle doesn't finish the job. Asa had already torn down some idols in Judah, but the reform was half-done — there were still idols in people's houses, still high places where folks quietly worshiped other gods alongside the Lord Matthew Henry. Azariah is saying: don't coast on this win. The real work — cleaning house, spiritually — is still ahead of you, and it's going to be harder than the battle you just fought.

Notice the shape of the sentence: strength commanded, discouragement forbidden, reward promised. It's not "try hard and maybe it'll work out." It's a flat guarantee — your labor will not evaporate into nothing. The word translated "discouraged" literally pictures hands going slack, dropping the tool, giving up mid-swing Strong's. Azariah is picturing a man in the middle of demolition work whose arms just want to quit.

This verse sits at a hinge in 2 Chronicles: it's the moment that pushes Asa from a partial, cautious reform into a full national covenant to seek the Lord (you'll see that happen just a few verses later, in 2 Chronicles 15:12-15). There's no major doctrinal argument between traditions here — everyone reads this as straightforward covenant encouragement. The real question every reader has to sit with is a practical one: what, exactly, is the "reward," and is it guaranteed in this life or beyond it? Keep that question — we'll come back to it.

Second Chronicles was written after the Babylonian exile — after Nebuchadnezzar's armies had flattened Jerusalem in 586 BC and hauled the survivors off to Babylon — probably sometime in the 400s or 300s BC, likely by the same circle of scribes responsible for Ezra-Nehemiah. The people reading this book had returned home to a ruined city and a shattered sense of identity. They needed to know: did God's promises to David's royal line still mean anything? Chronicles answers by retelling the story of the kings of Judah with an eye toward exactly this kind of moment — a king who seeks God faithfully and sees God show up.

The scene itself is set roughly around 910-895 BC, in the reign of Asa, king of Judah, a few generations after the kingdom of Israel split into two (Israel in the north, Judah in the south) following Solomon's death. Asa has just come back from crushing a massive invasion by Zerah the Cushite — a foreign army from the south. The prophet Azariah son of Oded meets him with a message that's really a warning wrapped in encouragement: Israel to the north, he says, has gone through long stretches "without the true God, without a priest to teach, and without law" ( 2 Chronicles 15:3) — spiritual chaos and civil unrest followed. The implicit threat is clear: Judah could go the same way if reform stalls out now.

Asa's fight wasn't just political. Judah at this time was dotted with local shrines, household idols, and "high places" — hilltop worship sites that blended Canaanite religious practice with the worship of Yahweh. Removing them meant confronting his own grandmother, tearing down altars neighbors had used for generations, and picking a fight with the spiritual habits of an entire nation. Azariah's word comes right when Asa needs the nerve to keep going.

The command "be strong" is חָזַק (châzaq, H2388) — a word that originally pictures grabbing hold of something and refusing to let go; it's used for fastening a hand onto a weapon, or for a nation "seizing" a city Strong's. It's not a pep talk about feelings — it's a command to grip the work and hold on.

"Do not be discouraged" translates רָפָה (râphâh, H7503), which literally means to go slack, like a bowstring losing its tension or a hand relaxing its grip Strong's. Put the two together and you get a vivid picture: God is saying, don't let go of what you've grabbed. The word for "hand," יָד (yâd, H3027), sits right underneath this idea in Hebrew idiom — "weak hands" is the standard phrase for a discouraged, quitting posture.

"Your work" is פְּעֻלָּה (pᵉʻullâh, H6468) — not a vague reference to effort, but a noun built from the verb "to labor, to do" — real, concrete output, the demolished altars and torn-down idols, the covenant-making that's about to happen Strong's.

And "reward" is שָׂכָר (sâkâr, H7939) — this is a wage word, the term you'd use for a hired worker's pay Strong's. It's the same root idea behind the word "hire" in everyday commerce. Azariah isn't promising a vague spiritual glow; he's telling Asa that God settles accounts like an employer who actually pays what's owed — a picture that echoes all the way to Hebrews 6:10, where God is described as too just to forget what you've done for him.

This exact phrase — "be strong, do not be afraid/discouraged" — isn't unique to Asa. God says nearly the same words to Joshua as he's about to lead Israel into a land full of giants and fortified cities ( Joshua 1:7, 1:9), and David says them to Solomon as he hands him the impossible job of building the temple ( 1 Chronicles 28:20) Tyndale. It's a pattern God uses on people right before he asks them to do something that will cost them everything they've got: conquer a land, build a temple, tear down idols. Every time, the promise underneath the command is the same — God himself is present, and the labor is not wasted.

Jesus is where that pattern finally lands on solid ground instead of a shaky promise to a flawed king. Asa's obedience was real but partial — later in his own story he'll fail to trust God fully ( 2 Chronicles 16), which is the sober truth about every human "be strong" moment: the courage runs out eventually. But Jesus is the one who held on with a grip that never went slack, all the way to a cross, and whose Father did in fact reward the work — raising him, seating him at his own right hand. When Paul tells the Corinthians "your labor in the Lord is not in vain" ( 1 Corinthians 15:58), he's not inventing a new idea; he's handing Asa's promise forward, now anchored in the resurrection instead of just a king's battlefield. And when Colossians 3:24 tells slaves and servants they'll receive "an inheritance from the Lord as your reward," it says plainly what Chronicles only hinted at: the wage isn't just peace in your lifetime, it's an inheritance that outlasts your lifetime, paid out by "the Lord Christ" himself. Whatever Asa was promised in shadow, you're promised in full daylight, because the one paying the wage has already proven, in his own body, that he pays.

Here's the uncomfortable part: Asa had already won. He'd just crushed an invading army. He could have gone home, thrown a party, and called it a life's work. Instead, God sends a prophet to meet him at the door and say, essentially, "Good — now do the harder thing." The battle was the easy part. Tearing idols out of your own house, confronting your own grandmother's religion, is the part that actually costs you.

You know this pattern in your own life. You've had a spiritual win — a hard conversation you finally had, a habit you finally broke, a season of prayer that felt alive — and right behind it comes the temptation to coast. Your hands start to go slack exactly at the moment the real work is still in front of you: the relationship you haven't actually reconciled, the resentment you've managed but not surrendered, the idol you've moved to a back room instead of smashing.

Azariah doesn't say "feel strong." He says "be strong" — grip it, whether you feel like it or not John Gill. And he doesn't leave you white-knuckling it alone; he attaches a promise to the command. God is not a distant employer who might forget your paycheck. Hebrews 6:10 says flatly he's too just to forget the love you've shown him.

So ask yourself honestly today: where have your hands gone slack? What's the unfinished demolition project in your own life — the thing you started tearing down for God and then quietly left half-standing because it got uncomfortable? That's exactly where this verse is aimed at you. Not at your next big battle. At the boring, costly, unglamorous follow-through you'd rather skip.
