I Chronicles 7:9

On the surface, this is just a list — nine names you'll never use, attached to a guy named Becher, capped with a number: 20,200 fighting men. Your eye slides right off it. But slow down. This verse sits in the middle of a long stretch of family trees that opens the whole book of Chronicles — chapters of nothing but names, from Adam all the way down. To you it reads like a phone book. To the people who first received it, it read like a deed to a house. Every name here is a claim: we belong, we're counted, we're still here.

Notice the phrase "mighty men of valor." That's not decoration. The Chronicler keeps tying these family names to military strength — these aren't just sons, they're soldiers, a clan ready to defend its land. Becher is one of Benjamin's sons (you can see Benjamin's line being traced here), and Benjamin is the small tribe that nearly got wiped out earlier in Israel's story. So when you read "20,200 mighty men," there's quiet good news buried in the arithmetic: the tribe that almost died survived and multiplied.

Here's what's easy to miss. The book of Chronicles was written for people coming home from exile — people who'd lost almost everything and were asking, Are we still God's people? Did the promises die when Jerusalem fell? This list is the answer. God kept the books. He didn't lose track of a single family. That's the whole point of the dull names: a God who remembers is the opposite of a God who abandons.

Chronicles was written late — probably around 400 BC, give or take a few decades, well after the Jews had come back from being hauled off to Babylon. Picture the situation: about seventy years earlier, Babylon had burned Jerusalem to the ground, torn down the temple, and dragged the leading families into exile a thousand miles away. Now a remnant has trickled back to a small, poor, half-rebuilt city. They're surrounded by people who don't want them there. The empire that rules them now is Persia. The glory days of King David feel like a fairy tale somebody's grandmother told.

Into that fragile, doubting community comes the Chronicler with these genealogies. And here's the thing about ancient family lists — they weren't trivia. They were how you proved you had a right to land, a right to serve in the temple, a right to be called an Israelite at all. If your name wasn't in the records, you were nobody. Later in this same era, men who couldn't prove their lineage got barred from the priesthood (you can read about it in Ezra and Nehemiah). So a list like this one was load-bearing. It told a battered people: here is your pedigree, here is proof you are who you say you are.

The military count matters too. A returning community living among hostile neighbors needed to know it had men who could fight. Remembering that Becher's clan once fielded 20,200 warriors wasn't nostalgia — it was a reminder that this tribe had backbone, that God had grown them strong before and could again.

Two phrases carry the weight here. The first is גִּבּוֹרֵי חָיִל (gibborei chayil), translated "mighty men of valor." Gibbor means a strong man, a warrior, a champion — it's the same word used for David's elite bodyguards and even, elsewhere, for God himself as a warrior. Chayil is a fat, generous word: it means strength, but also wealth, army, capability, worth. (It's the very word used of the "woman of valor" in Proverbs 31.) So this clan isn't just muscular — they're substantial, they carry weight, they're the kind of people you'd want on your side.

The second is הִתְיַחְשָׂם (hityachsam), "their genealogies were recorded." The root yachas means to register, to enroll, to be entered in an official list. It's a bookkeeping word — paperwork, records, an archive. Chronicles uses it again and again, almost lovingly. Why does that matter? Because it tells you somebody was keeping count. These families weren't a blur. Each one was written down, on purpose, by name. When you read a tedious list and feel like a number, hityachsam whispers the opposite: to be enrolled in God's records is to be known, not lost in the crowd.

Let's be honest — you skimmed this verse, didn't you? Names you can't pronounce, a number that means nothing to you. And that reaction is exactly the place God wants to meet you.

Because here's the quiet, almost unbearable kindness of a verse like this: God wrote down Elioenai and Anathoth and Alemeth. Men whose only memorial in all of human history is that the Lord made sure their names got recorded. They did nothing famous. They left no monuments. And God said: count them, write them down, every one.

You live in a world that measures you by output — your follower count, your salary, your highlight reel. A world where the people who don't trend simply vanish. And then you open the Bible and find God spending entire chapters on people who never trended, because to him they were never forgettable. That's not a footnote about ancient Israel. That's a window into how God sees you.

So here's the cost this verse asks of you: stop believing the lie that you only matter when you're visible. Stop performing for a crowd that will forget you anyway. The God who kept the books on a soldier named Omri three thousand years ago has your name written down too — and not in a ledger of accomplishments, but, if you belong to Christ, in the Book of Life. Let that reorder what you're chasing this week. You don't have to make a name for yourself. You already have one. He wrote it down.

• Father, I confess I keep trying to make myself visible, to be counted by people who will forget me anyway. Free me from performing for a crowd.
• You called these men 'mighty men of valor' — give me that kind of substance, the strength and worth that comes from belonging to you, not from being seen.
• Lord, you preserved Benjamin when that tribe was nearly wiped out. Remind me that you keep your promises across generations, even when everything looks lost.

• Where are you measuring your worth by how visible you are, instead of by the fact that God already knows you by name?
