Look at what this verse actually names, one item at a time, because the writer isn't summarizing — he's making you look at specifics. "They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire." Not "they were idolatrous" in some vague sense — they took their own children and burned them as offerings, most likely to Molech, the god whose worship promised protection or fertility in exchange for a child's life. Then: "practiced divination and soothsaying" — they turned to fortune-tellers and omen-readers to find out the future instead of asking God. And then the summary line that ties it together: "they devoted themselves to doing evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger." The word "devoted" is important — this wasn't a lapse, it was a lifestyle. The Hebrew behind it (more on that below) has the flavor of selling yourself into something Strong's.

What's easy to miss is the escalation. Child sacrifice isn't listed first because it's the mildest offense that then gets worse — it's listed first because it's the worst, and everything else in the verse cascades from a heart that had already crossed that line. If you'll burn your own child, divination is nothing. This verse sits right in the middle of the historian's explanation for why the northern kingdom of Israel fell to Assyria in 722 BC ( 2 Kings 17:6) — it's not just politics, it's the theological verdict Matthew Henry. The whole chapter is a courtroom summary: here is the evidence, here is why the judgment was just.

Where Christians sometimes disagree is on how literally "passing through the fire" should be read — some older interpreters wondered if it meant a fire-walking ritual of dedication rather than literal killing. But the parallel language in 2 Kings 21:6 and Ezekiel 23:37 makes clear actual child sacrifice is meant, and Leviticus 18:21 forbids exactly this practice by name.

This verse comes from 2 Kings, written by an unknown editor (likely working during or shortly after the Babylonian exile, so sometime around 560–540 BC) who compiled royal records to explain to a defeated, displaced people why their national story ended in disaster. But the events described happened much earlier — in the final years of the northern kingdom of Israel, right before it fell to the Assyrian Empire in 722 BC under King Shalmaneser and then Sargon II.

Picture the political situation: Israel, the ten northern tribes, had split off from Judah two centuries earlier and set up its own kings, its own worship centers, its own everything. By the time of Hoshea, its last king, the nation was a vassal squeezed between Assyria to the east and Egypt to the south, playing dangerous games of shifting alliances that finally got it crushed. But the historian isn't interested in giving you a geopolitics lecture — he wants you to see that behind the Assyrian siege engines was something worse: two hundred years of a nation systematically trading the God who rescued them from Egyptian slavery for the gods of the very Canaanite nations they were supposed to have replaced.

Child sacrifice to Molech (or Baal) wasn't some fringe practice — it was mainstream Canaanite religion, tied to fertility and crisis-worship: you give the god your most precious thing to guarantee his favor. Kings did it too — King Ahaz of Judah is recorded doing the same thing in 2 Kings 16:3 and 2 Chronicles 28:3, and later King Manasseh in 2 Kings 21:6, which tells you this wasn't confined to Israel in the north; Judah caught the same disease. Divination and soothsaying were the everyday spiritual technology of the ancient world — you paid someone to read entrails, cast lots, or whisper incantations to learn what the gods wanted or what was coming. Israel had been given prophets who spoke for the living God plainly; instead they paid strangers to guess.

The phrase "sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire" uses בֵּן (bên, H1121) and בַּת (bath, H1323) — the ordinary, tender words for "son" and "daughter" Strong's. The text doesn't reach for a distancing, clinical term. It wants you to feel the weight of "son," "daughter" sitting right next to "fire" (אֵשׁ, ʼêsh, H784).

The two occult practices are קֶסֶם (qeçem, H7081), divination — related to the verb קָסַם (qâçam, H7080), meaning to determine something by lot or magic, essentially outsourcing your future to a paid guesser instead of God Strong's — and נָחַשׁ (nâchash, H5172), which literally carries the sense of hissing or whispering a spell, the picture of someone muttering incantations under their breath to conjure knowledge Strong's.

But the phrase that really carries the moral verdict of the verse is built from מָכַר (mâkar, H4376), "to sell" — the same word used for selling a slave or a daughter into marriage — combined with עָשָׂה רַע (ʻâsâh raʻ), "to do evil" Strong's. Some translations, like the ESV, render this as "sold themselves to do evil," which is the vivid image: they didn't stumble into sin, they signed a contract with it, the way Ahab did in 1 Kings 21:20 and 21:25. This is happening "in the eyes of the LORD" (עַיִן, ʻayin, "eye," H5869, paired with יְהֹוָה, H3068), which isn't decoration — it means nothing was hidden. And the result is כַּעַס (kaʻaç, H3707) — not mild displeasure, but grief that boils into indignation. God isn't a distant judge checking boxes; he's a father watching his children destroy themselves and burning with anger and sorrow at once.

Here's the gut-punch: the very thing Israel did to try to manipulate their gods — sacrifice a son to secure favor — is the exact inversion of what the true God actually does for his people. They burned their sons to their gods, hoping to buy protection. God gave his Son, at cost to himself, to actually provide it ( John 3:16, Romans 8:32). Israel thought the sacrifice had to come from them, extracted from their own flesh and blood, offered upward to appease an angry deity. The gospel reverses the direction completely — the sacrifice comes down from God, offered by him, at his own expense, because no sacrifice we could make would ever be enough.

There's also a quieter echo worth sitting with: Abraham was told to take his son up a mountain and offer him ( Genesis 22), and God stopped his hand and provided a ram instead — a deliberate, permanent line drawn against child sacrifice, showing Israel from the very beginning of their story that this is not who their God is or what he wants. Centuries later, Israel forgot that lesson so completely they were doing to their children exactly what Abraham was told never to do. Jesus is the ram caught in the thicket finally made real — the substitute God himself provides, once and for all ( Hebrews 10:10), so that no father, no mother, no child ever has to be offered up to satisfy a hungry god again.

And where Israel "sold themselves to do evil," Scripture says of Christ that though he was rich, he sold himself, so to speak, into poverty and death for us ( 2 Corinthians 8:9, Philippians 2:6-8) — not enslaved to evil, but freely giving himself to rescue people who were.

You probably haven't burned a child on an altar or paid a fortune-teller this week. It would be easy to read this verse, feel appropriately horrified, and close the book feeling superior. Don't. The pattern underneath the horror is what should actually stop you: people so hungry for control, security, or answers that they will sacrifice what's most precious to them and consult anyone but God to get it.

Ask yourself honestly what you've laid on an altar to buy some sense of safety or success — your marriage, your integrity, your kid's childhood, your Sundays, your conscience — traded away because some other god (career, approval, control, comfort) promised it would pay off. And ask where you go for answers when you're anxious about the future. Divination looks different now — it's the horoscope app, the compulsive polling of Google, the psychic hotline, or just refusing to pray because you'd rather manage the outcome yourself than hand it to God and wait.

The word "devoted" should needle you. This wasn't Israel having a bad week; it was a settled direction of life. That's the real question this verse puts to you: not "have you sinned" (of course you have) but "what have you devoted yourself to?" What gets your first instinct, your money, your fear-response, your hope? The cost this verse asks of you is to stop calling small, respectable idolatries by nicer names, and to bring the actual thing — the specific sacrifice you've been making to something other than God — into the light and put it down. That's not a comfortable prayer. It's the only honest one.
