Read this slowly and you can feel the walls closing in. One king of Israel — Pekah — sitting on a throne he took by murder, and into his reign walks Tiglath-pileser, king of the Assyrian empire, the biggest, most ruthless military machine of the ancient world. He doesn't just raid; he takes territory: Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, the whole region of Gilead east of the Jordan, and Galilee — "all the land of Naphtali." Then he does the thing Assyria was infamous for: he deports the population. Not just conquest, but forced relocation, "as captives to Assyria."

What's easy to miss on a first read is how much land this actually is. This isn't a border skirmish. Naphtali, Gilead, Galilee — this is the entire northern and eastern frontier of the kingdom of Israel, gone in one campaign. What's left after this verse is basically just the hill country around Samaria, the capital. This is the beginning of the end. The full destruction of the northern kingdom is still about ten years away ( II Kings 17:6), but this verse is the first bite taken out of the body.

Where does this sit in the bigger story? II Kings has been chronicling king after king of Israel, almost all of them assassinated by their successors Matthew Henry, and the moral thread running underneath all of it is that these kings kept worshiping false gods and playing power politics instead of trusting the Lord. Pekah's specific sin, which the text doesn't spell out here but which the wider record makes clear, was throwing Israel into a suicidal military alliance against Assyria — and Assyria answered Tyndale. There's no real theological disagreement among Christian traditions on this verse itself; it's straight historical narrative. The interpretive question that does come up (largely settled by archaeology) is simply confirming which Assyrian king this is, since he appears under different names in different records Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

This is around 732 BC. The books of Kings were compiled later, likely during or after the Babylonian exile (some time after 586 BC), by writers looking back at centuries of history and asking: how did we end up here? But the events themselves are happening in real time, in the mid-700s BC, and we actually have outside confirmation — Tiglath-pileser III left his own inscriptions bragging about this very campaign, found in the ruins of Nimrud in what's now Iraq Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Here's the political mess behind the verse. Pekah, king of the northern kingdom of Israel, had teamed up with Rezin, king of the Arameans (based in Damascus), to form an alliance against the rising Assyrian empire. They tried to pressure Judah's king Ahaz into joining them, and when he refused, they attacked Judah instead. Ahaz panicked and did something catastrophic: he sent a message to Tiglath-pileser himself, essentially saying "I'm your servant, come save me from these two kings" ( II Kings 16:7). That's an invitation for the biggest predator in the region to come feast — and he did, first on Aram and Israel's rebel coalition, then, later, on Judah too. Tiglath-pileser's answer to Ahaz's plea was this invasion.

Assyria's strategy, standard practice for them, was to smash any resistance and then physically remove the population — scatter conquered peoples across the empire so they'd lose their identity, their land claims, their ability to organize a rebellion. That's exactly what happens to the tribes east of the Jordan (Reuben, Gad, half of Manasseh) according to I Chronicles 5:26, and it's what happens here to Naphtali and Galilee. These people never come back. This is the beginning of what later Jewish tradition would call "the ten lost tribes" — swallowed into an empire and never heard from again in any organized way. The towns named here — Hazor, Kedesh, Ijon — had a long history; some had even been fought over a century earlier when Ben-hadad of Aram took them from Israel ( I Kings 15:20). Now Assyria takes far more than land; it takes people.

The verb doing the heavy lifting here is לָקַח (lâqach, H3947) — "to take," in the broadest possible sense Strong's. It's used earlier in the sentence for capturing the cities, and then again for taking the people captive. The repetition matters: the same word covers "he took the town" and "he took the people" — as if, to the empire, there's no real difference. Land and human beings are both just inventory to be seized.

Notice too the name תִּגְלַת פִּלְאֶסֶר (Tiglath Pilʼeçer, H8407), flagged in Strong's as "of foreign derivation" Strong's — meaning the Hebrew writer isn't even trying to translate it, he's just transliterating a foreign king's foreign name into Hebrew letters. Small detail, but it tells you something: Israel is now living inside someone else's vocabulary, someone else's empire.

And look at פֶּקַח (Peqach, H6492), Pekah's own name, which comes from a root meaning "watch" or "open (the eyes)" Strong's. There's a bitter irony buried there — a king named "Watchman" or "the one who sees," and yet he's the one who didn't see this coming, who gambled his whole northern frontier on an alliance that blew up in his face.

Finally, בּוֹא (bôwʼ, H935), "to come," is deceptively plain — it's the ordinary verb for someone walking into a room Strong's. But here the "coming" is an empire's army marching over your border. Hebrew often lets the plainest verbs carry the heaviest weight; the horror is in what follows the verb, not the verb itself.

This verse names Galilee — "all the land of Naphtali" — as the very first territory to fall, the first place where God's people are torn out of their land and marched off into a foreign empire. Seven hundred years later, that same region, Galilee of the Gentiles, is where Matthew tells us the light first dawns again: "the people living in darkness have seen a great light" ( Matthew 4:15-16, quoting Isaiah 9:1-2 — the same Isaiah passage that names this very Assyrian crisis). Jesus doesn't begin his ministry in Jerusalem, the center of religious respectability. He begins in Naphtali. He begins exactly where the darkness started.

That's not a coincidence buried in geography trivia — it's the pattern of the whole Bible. The place of judgment becomes the place of first mercy. The land that was emptied by deportation becomes the land where God himself shows up in flesh to gather people back. Where Tiglath-pileser took captives away, Jesus walks in and starts calling people to himself — fishermen, tax collectors, the overlooked edges of a broken kingdom.

There's a deeper thread too. Pekah and the northern kingdom kept trying to save themselves through political alliances — lean on Aram, provoke Assyria, gamble with armies — and it cost them everything. Ahaz did the same thing from the other side, begging Assyria for rescue instead of trusting God, and Isaiah warned him plainly not to ( Isaiah 7:1-9). Jesus is the answer to that entire failed strategy: the true King who doesn't save his people through military alliance or foreign power, but by laying down his own life. Where these kings brought exile on their people trying to preserve their thrones, Jesus goes willingly into exile — even death — to bring his people home for good.

It's easy to read a verse like this as ancient real estate news — cities and borders you've never heard of, changing hands three thousand years ago. But sit with what actually happened to real families here. People who had lived in Hazor and Kedesh for generations, whose grandparents were buried there, were marched out at spearpoint and scattered into an empire that didn't care what happened to them. And the text doesn't soften it or explain it away. It just states it, flat: he took them.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what alliances are you trusting instead of God right now? Pekah trusted a coalition. Ahaz trusted Assyria itself. Both men were trying to secure their own safety through arrangements that felt smart in the moment and turned out to be the very thing that destroyed them. You probably aren't managing a kingdom, but you are managing a life — and you have your own version of "let's ally with Assyria": the job, the relationship, the bank account, the reputation you're quietly counting on to keep you safe, instead of God.

This verse doesn't ask you to feel bad about ancient geopolitics. It asks you to notice that the people who trust in something other than God for their security tend to lose exactly the thing they were trying to protect. The cost this verse asks of you is specific: name, out loud, to God, what you're actually leaning on right now instead of him. Not in general — specifically. And then let him be the one you actually trust, even when it feels less controllable than your own arrangements.

• Teach me to read the warnings in Israel's history not as someone else's failure, but as a mirror for my own heart.
