I Kings 2:2

This is an old man's last words to his son, and David doesn't dress it up. "I am about to go the way of all the earth" is his way of saying, plainly, I am dying. No euphemism about "passing on to a better place," no avoidance — just the flat, universal fact: everyone who has ever stood on dirt goes back into it Adam Clarke. Kings, peasants, prophets, nobodies — one road, one destination. David isn't the first to say it this way; Joshua said almost the identical thing at the end of his life ( Joshua 23:14), and it seems David is deliberately echoing him John Gill.

Then comes the pivot: "So be strong and prove yourself a man." Notice what David does not say. He doesn't say "be strong" in some vague, motivational-poster sense. In the very next verses ( 1 Kings 2:3-4) he ties that strength directly to keeping God's charge — walking in his ways, keeping his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies as written in the Law of Moses. The courage David is calling for isn't military swagger or political cunning (though Solomon will need both); it's the courage to actually obey God when it's inconvenient, when no one's watching, when you're the most powerful man in the kingdom and answer to nobody but God.

It's easy to miss that this phrase — "be strong and show yourself a man" — isn't new. God said something almost identical to Joshua as he took over from Moses ( Deuteronomy 31:23), and Joshua said it to the nation, and David himself will say a version of it to Solomon again later regarding the temple ( 1 Chronicles 28:20). This is a passed-down charge, generation to generation, at every moment of leadership transition. In the bigger story of 1 Kings, this moment is the hinge: the united kingdom's greatest king is dying, and everything about whether Israel thrives now depends on whether this young son will actually obey. Spoiler — Solomon starts well and ends badly ( 1 Kings 11), which makes David's charge here almost painfully poignant in hindsight.

First Kings opens sometime around 970 BC, at the very end of David's forty-year reign over Israel. David is old — bedridden, in fact ( 1 Kings 1:1) — and the kingdom is not exactly calm. His son Adonijah has just tried to seize the throne in a near-coup while David was still breathing ( 1 Kings 1:5-10), and it took Bathsheba and the prophet Nathan intervening to get David to publicly name Solomon as king instead. So when David speaks these words, he's not delivering a peaceful retirement speech — he's handing off a kingdom that has just barely avoided a civil war, to a young man (Solomon is likely a teenager or young adult, inexperienced) who will need to deal immediately with rivals like Adonijah, the general Joab, and the priest Abiathar, all of whom backed the wrong horse.

This book, 1 Kings, was almost certainly compiled by an editor working with royal records sometime later — many scholars point to the period during or after the Babylonian exile (the 500s BC, when Jerusalem had already fallen and the nation was trying to make sense of how it all went wrong). That matters here: the original readers already knew how Solomon's story ends — the glory, and then the slide into idolatry that helped set the kingdom on the road to eventual ruin. So David's charge to "keep God's commandments" lands on those readers with real weight and real irony. They're reading this looking backward, thinking: if only he had actually listened.

The phrase "way of all the earth" wasn't unique to David — it's the kind of resigned, dignified language ancient Israelites used for death, treating it as the common inheritance of every human being rather than something to be dressed up or denied.

The Hebrew behind "I go" is הָלַךְ (hâlak, H1980) — a common verb for walking, but used here in a way that pictures death not as a stopping but as a continued going Strong's. David isn't describing an end; he's describing a road he's still walking. Combine that with דֶּרֶךְ (derek, H1870) — "way" or "road," but also used figuratively for a whole course of life or way of acting Strong's — and you get the picture: death isn't a wall, it's a path everyone eventually walks, David included.

Then there's אֶרֶץ (ʼerets, H776), "earth" or "land" — rooted, some think, in a word meaning "to be firm." Ironic, given the context: the "firm ground" is exactly where every living thing ends up returning to Strong's.

But the word doing the heaviest lifting is חָזַק (châzaq, H2388) — "be strong." Its root sense is to fasten upon, seize, grip tight — this isn't a passive feeling of courage, it's an active clenching-down, a refusal to let go Strong's. It's the same verb God uses when commissioning Joshua ( Deuteronomy 31:23) and that David uses again later charging Solomon about the temple ( 1 Chronicles 28:20). Paired with it is אִישׁ (ʼîysh, H376) — "man," a male individual, often used almost as an intensifier of maturity or full personhood rather than just gender Strong's. "Show yourself a man" isn't about proving toughness — it's about stepping fully into the weight of responsibility God has laid on you, gripping it, and not letting go.

David is the ancestor through whom God promised an eternal throne ( 2 Samuel 7:12-16), and this moment — an aging king passing that promise to his son, conditioned on faithful obedience — is the first test case of a pattern that runs all through the Old Testament: a Davidic king rises, and the whole covenant hinges on whether he'll actually keep God's law Tyndale. Solomon starts strong and ends badly. So does nearly every king after him. The pattern keeps failing — which is exactly why Israel kept longing for a better son of David, one whose strength wouldn't crack under the weight of the crown.

Jesus is that son ( Matthew 1:1, Romans 1:3-4). Where Solomon's obedience to God's charge lasted for a season and then buckled under wealth, power, and foreign wives ( 1 Kings 11:1-8), Jesus obeyed his Father's will perfectly, all the way to the point where obedience cost him everything — his life. And notice: David says "I am about to go the way of all the earth" as a simple, unavoidable fact of being human. Jesus walked that same road — real death, real burial — but he walked out of it. Hebrews 9:27 says it's appointed for man to die once and then face judgment; Jesus faced both death and judgment on our behalf and rose to prove it was finished.

There's also a quieter echo here worth naming honestly: the charge "be strong" that gets passed from Moses to Joshua, Joshua to Israel, David to Solomon, keeps getting handed down because no human recipient of it ever finishes the job completely. Paul picks up the exact language in 1 Corinthians 16:13 and Ephesians 6:10, but notice he changes the source of the strength — "be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power." The line finally lands not on a better human king gripping down harder, but on Christ's power gripping us.

You're going to die. So am I. David says it without flinching — "I am about to go the way of all the earth" — and there's something almost freeing about that bluntness. Most of us spend enormous energy pretending otherwise, distracting ourselves, building things that feel permanent. David, on his deathbed, wastes no time on denial. He uses his last words on something that actually matters.

And what he says next is the real gut-punch: strength, for David, isn't about feelings of confidence or having your life together. It's about obedience — specifically, obeying God when the crown is on your head and no one can stop you if you don't. That's the cost this verse asks of you: not bravado, but the harder thing — gripping tight to God's commands precisely in the moments when you have the most freedom to ignore them. Solomon had every excuse to think he'd earned the right to write his own rules once he was king. So do you, in your own smaller kingdom — your career, your home, your reputation, the places where nobody's checking your work.

Here's the honest question this verse puts to you: where in your life have you quietly decided you're now strong enough, secure enough, successful enough, that God's commands are more like suggestions? David didn't tell Solomon "be strong" so he could rule harder. He told him to be strong so he could obey better. Your life is also, someday soon in the scale of eternity, going to end. What will your last charge to the people you love actually be about — and more urgently, what does today's obedience, while you still have breath, actually cost you?

• Lord, I don't like thinking about my own death — teach me to face it as honestly as David did, without pretending I have forever.
• Give me the kind of strength David meant: not bravado, but the grip to hold onto your commands even when no one is watching and I could get away with less.
• Show me the places in my life where I've quietly decided I'm too secure or too successful to need your obedience anymore.
• Thank you that Jesus, the true and better son of David, obeyed you perfectly where every human king before him failed — let his strength be the strength I actually lean on.
• As I hand things down to the people who come after me — children, friends, coworkers — help my legacy be faithfulness to you, not just success.
