Zu der Zeit schwur Josua und sprach: Verflucht sei der Mann vor dem HERRN, welcher sich aufmachen und diese Stadt Jericho bauen wird; wenn er ihren Grund legt, koste es ihn seinen erstgeborenen Sohn, und wenn er ihre Tore setzt, koste es ihn seinen jüngsten Sohn!

Joshua opened the campaign with the siege of Jericho, a city which could not trust so much to the courage of its people as to act offensively, and to send out its forces to oppose Israel's landing and encamping, but trusted so much to the strength of its walls as to stand upon its defence, and not to surrender, or desire conditions of peace. Now here we have the story of the taking of it, I. The directions and assurances which the captain of the Lord's host gave concerning it (Jos 6:1-5). II. The trial of the people's patient obedience in walking round the city six days (Jos 6:6-14). III. The wonderful delivery of it into their hands the seventh day, with a solemn charge to them to use it as a devoted thing (Jos 6:15-21 and Jos 6:24). IV. The preservation of Rahab and her relations (Jos 6:22, Jos 6:23, Jos 6:25). V. A curse pronounced upon the man that should dare to rebuild this city (Jos 6:26, Jos 6:27). An abstract of this story we find among the trophies of faith, Heb 11:30. "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days."
Quelle öffnen ↗6:26 Joshua placed a curse upon the site because Jericho was the first Canaanite town to resist God’s purposes in bringing Israel into the land. Jericho was also the first town to experience God’s judgment upon Canaan’s great wickedness. As the firstfruits of Israel’s conquest of Canaan, it belonged to God (Exod 13:2; 23:19). God executed Joshua’s curse on the first man to defy it (1 Kgs 16:34; cp. Josh 7).

Zu derselben Zeit baute Hiel von Bethel Jericho wieder auf. Es kostete ihn seinen erstgeborenen Sohn Abiram, als er ihren Grund legte, und seinen jüngsten Sohn Segub, als er ihre Tore setzte, nach dem Worte des HERRN, welches er durch Josua, den Sohn Nuns, geredet hatte.
Es unterwanden sich aber etliche der herumziehenden jüdischen Beschwörer, über denen, welche böse Geister hatten, den Namen des Herrn Jesus zu nennen, indem sie sagten: Ich beschwöre euch bei dem Jesus, welchen Paulus predigt!
Jesus aber schwieg. Und der Hohepriester sprach zu ihm: Ich beschwöre dich bei dem lebendigen Gott, daß du uns sagest, ob du der Christus, der Sohn Gottes bist!
Wenn aber Edom spräche: »Wir sind zwar zerstört, wir wollen aber die Trümmer wieder aufbauen«, so sagt der HERR der Heerscharen: Sie mögen bauen, ich aber will niederreißen; und man wird sie nennen: »Land der Gottlosigkeit« und »das Volk, über das der HERR ewiglich zürnt«.
Der König sprach abermal zu ihm: Wie oft muß ich dich beschwören, daß du mir nichts anderes als die Wahrheit sagest im Namen des HERRN?
