The words correspond to Rev 17:3, to heighten the contrast of the bride and harlot. mountain--Compare Eze 40:2, where a similar vision is given from a high mountain. that great--omitted in A, B, Vulgate, Syriac, Coptic, and CYPRIAN. Translate then, "the holy city Jerusalem." descending--Even in the millennium the earth will not be a suitable abode for transfigured saints, who therefore shall then reign in heaven over the earth. But after the renewal of the earth at the close of the millennium and judgment, they shall descend from heaven to dwell on an earth assimilated to heaven itself. "From God" implies that "we (the city) are God's workmanship."
Quelle öffnen ↗Hitherto the prophecy of this book has presented to us a very remarkable mixture of light and shade, prosperity and adversity, mercy and judgment, in the conduct of divine Providence towards the church in the world: now, at the close of all, the day breaks, and the shadows flee away; a new world now appears, the former having passed away. Some are willing to understand all that is said in these last two chapters of the state of the church even here on earth, in the glory of the latter days; but others, more probably, take it as a representation of the perfect and triumphant state of the church in heaven. Und es streckte etwas wie eine Hand aus und ergriff mich bei den Locken meines Hauptes, und der Geist hob mich empor zwischen Himmel und Erde und brachte mich in Gesichten Gottes nach Jerusalem, an den Eingang des innern Tors, das gegen Mitternacht schaut, woselbst ein Bild der Eifersucht, das den Eifer Gottes erregt, seinen Standort hatte.
Und alsbald war ich im Geist; und siehe, ein Thron stand im Himmel, und auf dem Thron saß einer.
Als mich nun der Geist erhob und wegnahm, ging ich erbittert in grimmigem Zorn, und die Hand des Herrn lag fest auf mir.
Wenn ich nun von dir ginge, so würde dich der Geist des HERRN hinwegnehmen, ich weiß nicht wohin; und wenn ich dann käme und es Ahab sagte, und er fände dich nicht, so würde er mich töten; und doch fürchtet dein Knecht den HERRN von Jugend auf!
