And this they did, not as we hoped--Translate, "And not as we hoped (that is, far beyond our hopes), but their own selves gave they first to the Lord." "First," not indicating priority of time, but first of all, above all in importance. The giving of themselves takes precedency of their other gifts, as being the motive which led them to the latter (Rom 15:16). by the will of God--not "according to the will of God," but "moved by the will of God, who made them willing" (Phi 2:13). It is therefore called (Co2 8:1), "the grace of God."
Quelle öffnen ↗In this and the following chapter Paul is exhorting and directing the Corinthians about a particular work of charity - to relieve the necessities of the poor saints at Jerusalem and in Judea, according to the good example of the churches in Macedonia, Rom 15:26. The Christians at Jerusalem, through war, famine, and persecution, had become poor, many of them had fallen into decay, and perhaps most of them were but poor when they first embraced Christianity; for Christ said, "The poor receive the gospel." Now Paul, though he was the apostle of the Gentiles, had a fonder regard, and kind concern, for those among the Jews who were converted to the Christian faith; and, though many of them had not so much affection to the Gentile converts as they ought to have had, yet the apostle would have the Gentiles to be kind to them, and stirred them up to contribute liberally for their relief. Upon this subject he is very copious, and writes very affectingly. In this eighth chapter he acquaints the Corinthians with, and commends, the good example of the Macedonians in this work of charity, and that Titus was sent to Corinth to collect their bounty (Co2 8:1-6). He the proceeds to urge this duty with several cogent arguments (Co2 8:7-15), and commends the persons who were employed in this affair (Co2 8:16-24).

Und David ging zu ihnen hinaus und sprach: Seid ihr in friedlicher Absicht zu mir gekommen, um mir zu helfen, so soll mein Herz mit euch einig sein; wenn aber, um mich meinen Feinden zu verraten, da doch kein Frevel in meinen Händen ist, so sehe der Gott unsrer Väter darein und strafe es!
So seid nun nicht halsstarrig wie eure Väter, sondern reichet dem HERRN die Hand und kommt zu seinem Heiligtum, welches er auf ewig geheiligt hat, und dienet dem HERRN, eurem Gott, so wird sich die Glut seines Zorns von euch wenden.
Sondern das ist der Bund, den ich mit dem Hause Israel nach jenen Tagen schließen will, spricht der HERR: Ich will mein Gesetz in ihr Herz geben und es in ihren Sinn schreiben und will ihr Gott sein, und sie sollen mein Volk sein;
Denn wir predigen nicht uns selbst, sondern Jesus Christus, daß er der Herr sei, wir aber eure Knechte um Jesu willen.
Aber dieses letzte Drittel will ich ins Feuer bringen und es läutern, wie man Silber läutert, und will es prüfen, wie man Gold prüft. Es wird meinen Namen anrufen, und ich will ihm antworten; ich will sagen: »Das ist mein Volk!« und es wird sagen: »Der HERR ist mein Gott!«
