Judgment had hitherto triumphed, but in these verses mercy rejoices against judgment. A sad end is made of this provoking people, but not a full end. The ruin seems to be universal, and yet will I leave a remnant, a little remnant, distinguished from the body of the people, a few of many, such as are left when the rest perish; and it is God that leaves them. This intimates that they deserved to be cut off with the rest, and would have been cut off if God had not left them. See Isa 1:9. It is a preserved remnant, saved from the ruin which the body of the nation is involved in (Eze 6:8): That you may have some who shall escape the sword. God said (Eze 5:12) that he would draw a sword after those who were scattered, that destruction should pursue them in their dispersion; but here is mercy remembered in the midst of that wrath, and a promise that some of the Jews of the dispersion, as they were afterwards called, should escape the sword. None of those who were to fall by the sword about Jerusalem shall escape; for they trust to Jerusalem's walls for security, and shall be made ashamed of that vain confidence. but some of them shall escape the sword among the nations, where, being deprived of all other stays, they stay themselves upon God only. They are said to have those who shall escape; for they shall be the seed of another generation, out of which Jerusalem shall flourish again. II. It is a penitent remnant (Eze 6:9): Those who escape of you shall remember me. Note, To those whom god designs for life he will give repentance unto life. They would recognize the reality of their own unfaithful hearts and hate themselves for all their detestable sins, and they will know that God’s threat of calamity on covenant breakers was absolutely serious. Some of those who know that I alone am the Lord might even experience the other side of God’s faithfulness: his swiftness to forgive those who repent. In the book of Exodus, Israel came to know that God is the Lord through his mighty acts of rescue (see Exod 6:7). Unfortunately, Israel’s behavior throughout their history showed that they had forgotten. They would come again to that knowledge through God’s acts of judgment.

Und ich will von ihnen einige Männer übriglassen vom Schwerte, vom Hunger und von der Pest, damit sie unter den Heiden, unter welche sie kommen, alle ihre Greuel erzählen und erfahren, daß ich der HERR bin.
Denn ich bin bei dir, spricht der HERR, dich zu erretten; denn ich will allen Nationen, dahin ich dich zerstreut habe, den Garaus machen; nur dir will ich nicht den Garaus machen; aber züchtigen werde ich dich nach dem Recht und kann dich nicht ungestraft lassen.
Es werden zwar einige wenige Leute, die dem Schwerte entrinnen, aus dem Lande Ägypten ins Land Juda zurückkehren; aber der ganze Überrest der Juden, die ins Land Ägypten gekommen sind, um sich daselbst aufzuhalten, sollen erfahren, wessen Wort besteht, das meinige oder das ihrige!
Welche von ihnen aber entrinnen, die werden auf den Bergen sein wie die Tauben in den Schluchten. Sie werden alle seufzen, ein jeder um seiner Missetat willen.
Fürchte du dich nicht, mein Knecht Jakob, spricht der HERR; denn ich bin mit dir; denn ich will allen Völkern, unter welche ich dich verstoßen habe, den Garaus machen; dir aber will ich nicht den Garaus machen, sondern züchtigen will ich dich nach dem Recht und dich nicht ungestraft lassen.
Ein Drittel von dir soll an der Pest sterben und in deiner Mitte durch Hunger aufgerieben werden; ein Drittel soll durch das Schwert fallen rings um dich her; das letzte Drittel aber will ich in alle Winde zerstreuen und das Schwert hinter ihnen her zücken.
Ein Drittel verbrenne im Feuer, mitten in der Stadt, wenn die Tage der Belagerung vollendet sind; ein Drittel nimm und zerhaue es mit dem Schwert rings um sie her; ein Drittel aber zerstreue in den Wind; denn ich will das Schwert zücken hinter ihnen her.
