فَهذَا أَيُّهَا الإِخْوَةُ حَوَّلْتُهُ تَشْبِيهًا إِلَى نَفْسِي وَإِلَى أَبُلُّوسَ مِنْ أَجْلِكُمْ، لِكَيْ تَتَعَلَّمُوا فِينَا:«أَنْ لاَ تَفْتَكِرُوا فَوْقَ مَا هُوَ مَكْتُوبٌ»، كَيْ لاَ يَنْتَفِخَ أَحَدٌ لأَجْلِ الْوَاحِدِ عَلَى الآخَرِ.

And--"Now," marking transition. in a figure transferred to myself--that is, I have represented under the persons of Apollos and myself what really holds good of all teachers, making us two a figure or type of all the others. I have mentioned us two, whose names have been used as a party cry; but under our names I mean others to be understood, whom I do not name, in order not to shame you [ESTIUS]. not to think, &c.--The best manuscripts omit "think." Translate, "That in us (as your example) ye might learn (this), not (to go) beyond what is written." Revere the silence of Holy Writ, as much as its declarations: so you will less dogmatize on what is not expressly revealed (Deu 29:29). puffed up for one--namely, "for one (favorite minister) against another." The Greek indicative implies, "That ye be not puffed up as ye are."

Directs them how to account of him and his fellow-ministers, and therein, tacitly at least, reproves them for their unworthy carriage towards him (Co1 4:1-6). II. He cautions them against pride and self-elation, and hints at the many temptations they had to conceive too highly of themselves, and despise him and other apostles, because of the great diversity in their circumstances and condition (Co1 4:7-13). III. He challenges their regard to him as their father in Christ (Co1 4:14-16). IV. He tells them of his having sent Timothy to them, and of his own purpose to come to them shortly, however some among them had pleased themselves, and grown vain, upon the quite contrary expectation (Co1 4:17 to the end).

فَإِنِّي إِنْ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَفْتَخِرَ لاَ أَكُونُ غَبِيًّا، لأَنِّي أَقُولُ الْحَقَّ. وَلكِنِّي أَتَحَاشَى لِئَلاَّ يَظُنَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْ جِهَتِي فَوْقَ مَا يَرَانِي أَوْ يَسْمَعُ مِنِّي.
لاَ يُخَسِّرْكُمْ أَحَدٌ الْجِعَالَةَ، رَاغِبًا فِي التَّوَاضُعِ وَعِبَادَةِ الْمَلاَئِكَةِ، مُتَدَاخِلاً فِي مَا لَمْ يَنْظُرْهُ، مُنْتَفِخًا بَاطِلاً مِنْ قِبَلِ ذِهْنِهِ الْجَسَدِيِّ،
فَإِنِّي أَقُولُ بِالنِّعْمَةِ الْمُعْطَاةِ لِي، لِكُلِّ مَنْ هُوَ بَيْنَكُمْ: أَنْ لاَ يَرْتَئِيَ فَوْقَ مَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَرْتَئِيَ، بَلْ يَرْتَئِيَ إِلَى التَّعَقُّلِ، كَمَا قَسَمَ اللهُ لِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِقْدَارًا مِنَ الإِيمَانِ.
أَنَّ إِنْجِيلَنَا لَمْ يَصِرْ لَكُمْ بِالْكَلاَمِ فَقَطْ، بَلْ بِالْقُوَّةِ أَيْضًا، وَبِالرُّوحِ الْقُدُسِ، وَبِيَقِينٍ شَدِيدٍ، كَمَا تَعْرِفُونَ أَيَّ رِجَال كُنَّا بَيْنَكُمْ مِنْ أَجْلِكُمْ.
وَأَمَّا مِنْ جِهَةِ مَا ذُبحَ لِلأَوْثَانِ: فَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ لِجَمِيعِنَا عِلْمًا. الْعِلْمُ يَنْفُخُ، وَلكِنَّ الْمَحَبَّةَ تَبْنِي.
لَيْسَ افْتِخَارُكُمْ حَسَنًا. أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ خَمِيرَةً صَغِيرَةً تُخَمِّرُ الْعَجِينَ كُلَّهُ؟
فَمَنْ هُوَ الإِنْسَانُ حَتَّى تَذكُرَهُ؟ وَابْنُ آدَمَ حَتَّى تَفْتَقِدَهُ؟
لأَنَّ جَمِيعَ الأَشْيَاءِ هِيَ مِنْ أَجْلِكُمْ، لِكَيْ تَكُونَ النِّعْمَةُ وَهِيَ قَدْ كَثُرَتْ بِالأَكْثَرِينَ، تَزِيدُ الشُّكْرَ لِمَجْدِ اللهِ.
