فَقَاَلَ وَهُوَ مُرْتَعِدٌ وَمُتَحَيِّرٌ:«يَارَبُّ، مَاذَا تُرِيدُ أَنْ أَفْعَلَ؟»فَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّبُّ:«قُمْ وَادْخُلِ الْمَدِينَةَ فَيُقَالَ لَكَ مَاذَا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ تَفْعَلَ».

And he, trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said--(The most ancient manuscripts and versions of the New Testament lack all these words here [including the last clause of Act 9:5]; but they occur in Act 26:14 and Act 22:10, from which they appear to have been inserted here). The question, "What shall I do, Lord?" or, "Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?" indicates a state of mind singularly interesting (see on Act 2:37). Its elements seem to be these: (1) Resistless conviction that "Jesus whom he persecuted," now speaking to him, was "Christ the Lord." (See on Gal 1:15-16). (2) As a consequence of this, that not only all his religious views, but his whole religious character, had been an entire mistake; that he was up to that moment fundamentally and wholly wrong. (3) That though his whole future was now a blank, he had absolute confidence in Him who had so tenderly arrested him in his blind career, and was ready both to take in all His teaching and to carry out all His directions. افتح المصدر ↗In this chapter we have, I. The famous story of St. Paul's conversion from being an outrageous persecutor of the gospel of Christ to be an illustrious professor and preacher of it. I. How he was first awakened and wrought upon by an appearance of Christ himself to him as he was going upon an errand of persecution to Damascus: and what a condition he was in while he lay under the power of those convictions and terrors (Act 9:1-9). 2. How he was baptized by Ananias, by immediate directions from heaven (Act 9:10-19). 3. How he immediately commenced doctor, and preached the faith of Christ, and proved what he preached (Act 9:20-22). 4. How he was persecuted, and narrowly escaped with his life (Act 9:23-25). 5. How he was admitted among the brethren at Jerusalem: how he preached, and was persecuted there (Act 9:26-30). 6. The rest and quietness which the churches enjoyed for some time after this (Act 9:31). II. The cure wrought by Peter on Eneas, who had long been laid up with a palsy (Act 9:32-35). III. The raising of Tabitha from death to life, at the prayer of Peter (Act 9:36-43).

لأَنَّهُمْ إِذْ كَانُوا يَجْهَلُونَ بِرَّ اللهِ، وَيَطْلُبُونَ أَنْ يُثْبِتُوا بِرَّ أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَمْ يُخْضَعُوا لِبِرِّ اللهِ.
أَمَّا أَنَا فَكُنْتُ بِدُونِ النَّامُوسِ عَائِشًا قَبْلاً. وَلكِنْ لَمَّا جَاءَتِ الْوَصِيَّةُ عَاشَتِ الْخَطِيَّةُ، فَمُتُّ أَنَا،
فَقَالُوا:«إِنَّ كَرْنِيلِيُوسَ قَائِدَ مِئَةٍ، رَجُلاً بَارًّا وَخَائِفَ اللهِ وَمَشْهُودًا لَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةِ الْيَهُودِ، أُوحِيَ إِلَيْهِ بِمَلاَكٍ مُقَدَّسٍ أَنْ يَسْتَدْعِيَكَ إِلَى بَيْتِهِ وَيَسْمَعَ مِنْكَ كَلاَمًا».
إِذًا يَا أَحِبَّائِي، كَمَا أَطَعْتُمْ كُلَّ حِينٍ، لَيْسَ كَمَا فِي حُضُورِي فَقَطْ، بَلِ الآنَ بِالأَوْلَى جِدًّا فِي غِيَابِي، تَمِّمُوا خَلاَصَكُمْ بِخَوْفٍ وَرِعْدَةٍ،
وَأَمَّا النَّامُوسُ فَدَخَلَ لِكَيْ تَكْثُرَ الْخَطِيَّةُ. وَلكِنْ حَيْثُ كَثُرَتِ الْخَطِيَّةُ ازْدَادَتِ النِّعْمَةُ جِدًّا.
فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَى يَافَا وَاسْتَدْعِ سِمْعَانَ الْمُلَقَّبَ بُطْرُسَ. إِنَّهُ نَازِلٌ فِي بَيْتِ سِمْعَانَ رَجُل دَبَّاغٍ عِنْدَ الْبَحْرِ. فَهُوَ مَتَى جَاءَ يُكَلِّمُكَ.
ثُمَّ إِشَعْيَاءُ يَتَجَاسَرُ وَيَقُولُ:«وُجِدْتُ مِنَ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَطْلُبُونِي، وَصِرْتُ ظَاهِرًا لِلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَسْأَلُوا عَنِّي».
وَلكِنْ كَثِيرُونَ أَوَّلُونَ يَكُونُونَ آخِرِينَ، وَآخِرُونَ أَوَّلِينَ.
