What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?--Though the act and the words of Christ, taken together, were sign enough, they were unconvinced: yet they were awed, and though at His very next appearance at Jerusalem they "sought to kill Him" for speaking of "His Father" just as He did now (Joh 5:18), they, at this early stage, only ask a sign.
افتح المصدر ↗In the close of the foregoing chapter we had an account of the first disciples whom Jesus called, Andrew and Peter, Philip and Nathanael. These were the first-fruits to God and to the Lamb, Rev 14:4. Now, in this chapter, we have, I. The account of the first miracle which Jesus wrought - turning water into wine, at Cana of Galilee (Joh 2:1-11), and his appearing at Capernaum (Joh 2:12). II. The account of the first passover he kept at Jerusalem after he began his public ministry; his driving the buyers and sellers out of the temple (Joh 2:13-17); and the sign he gave to those who quarrelled with him for it (Joh 2:18-22), with an account of some almost believers, that followed him, thereupon, for some time (Joh 2:23-25), but he knew them too well to put any confidence in them.

وَفِيمَا كَانَ الْجُمُوعُ مُزْدَحِمِينَ، ابْتَدَأَ يَقُولُ:«هذَا الْجِيلُ شِرِّيرٌ. يَطْلُبُ آيَةً، وَلاَ تُعْطَى لَهُ آيَةٌ إِلاَّ آيَةُ يُونَانَ النَّبِيِّ.
فَقَالُوا لَهُ:«فَأَيَّةَ آيَةٍ تَصْنَعُ لِنَرَى وَنُؤْمِنَ بِكَ؟ مَاذَا تَعْمَلُ؟
وَلَمَّا جَاءَ إِلَى الْهَيْكَلِ تَقَدَّمَ إِلَيْهِ رُؤَسَاءُ الْكَهَنَةِ وَشُيُوخُ الشَّعْب وَهُوَ يُعَلِّمُ، قَائِلِينَ:«بِأَيِّ سُلْطَانٍ تَفْعَلُ هذَا؟ وَمَنْ أَعْطَاكَ هذَا السُّلْطَانَ؟»
فَخَرَجَ الْفَرِّيسِيُّونَ وَابْتَدَأُوا يُحَاوِرُونَهُ طَالِبِينَ مِنْهُ آيَةً مِنَ السَّمَاءِ، لِكَيْ يُجَرِّبُوهُ.
فَسَأَلُوهُ وَقَالُوا لَهُ:«فَمَا بَالُكَ تُعَمِّدُ إِنْ كُنْتَ لَسْتَ الْمَسِيحَ، وَلاَ إِيلِيَّا، وَلاَ النَّبِيَّ؟»
قِائِلاً:«أَمَا أَوْصَيْنَاكُمْ وَصِيَّةً أَنْ لاَ تُعَلِّمُوا بِهذَا الاسْمِ؟ وَهَا أَنْتُمْ قَدْ مَلأْتُمْ أُورُشَلِيمَ بِتَعْلِيمِكُمْ، وَتُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَجْلِبُوا عَلَيْنَا دَمَ هذَا الإِنْسَانِ».
وَلَمَّا أَقَامُوهُمَا فِي الْوَسْطِ، جَعَلُوا يَسْأَلُونَهُمَا:«بِأَيَّةِ قُوَّةٍ وَبِأَيِّ اسْمٍ صَنَعْتُمَا أَنْتُمَا هذَا؟»
