أَجَابَ يَسُوعُ وَقَالَ لَهُ:«لَسْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنْتَ الآنَ مَا أَنَا أَصْنَعُ، وَلكِنَّكَ سَتَفْهَمُ فِيمَا بَعْدُ».

Jesus answered and said . . . What I do thou knowest not now--that is, Such condescension does need explanation; it is fitted to astonish. but thou shall know hereafter--afterwards, meaning presently; though viewed as a general maxim, applicable to all dark sayings in God's Word, and dark doings in God's providence, these words are full of consolation.

Henceforward we have an account of what passed between him and his disciples, who were to be entrusted with the affairs of his household, when he was gone into a far country; the necessary instructions and comforts he furnished them with. His hour being at hand, he applies himself to set his house in order. In this chapter I. He washes his disciples' feet (v. 1-17). II. He foretels who should betray him (Joh 13:18-30). III. He instructs them in the great doctrine of his own death, and the great duty of brotherly love (Joh 13:31-35). IV. He foretels Peter's denying him (Joh 13:36-38).

وَأَنَا سَمِعْتُ وَمَا فَهِمْتُ. فَقُلْتُ: «يَا سَيِّدِي، مَا هِيَ آخِرُ هذِهِ؟»
وَهذِهِ الأُمُورُ لَمْ يَفْهَمْهَا تَلاَمِيذُهُ أَوَّلاً، وَلكِنْ لَمَّا تَمَجَّدَ يَسُوعُ، حِينَئِذٍ تَذَكَّرُوا أَنَّ هذِهِ كَانَتْ مَكْتُوبَةً عَنْهُ، وَأَنَّهُمْ صَنَعُوا هذِهِ لَهُ.
وَأَمَّا الْمُعَزِّي، الرُّوحُ الْقُدُسُ، الَّذِي سَيُرْسِلُهُ الآبُ بِاسْمِي، فَهُوَ يُعَلِّمُكُمْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ، وَيُذَكِّرُكُمْ بِكُلِّ مَا قُلْتُهُ لَكُمْ.
قَالَ لَهُ سِمْعَانُ بُطْرُسُ:«يَا سَيِّدُ، إِلَى أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ؟» أَجَابَهُ يَسُوعُ:«حَيْثُ أَذْهَبُ لاَ تَقْدِرُ الآنَ أَنْ تَتْبَعَنِي، وَلكِنَّكَ سَتَتْبَعُنِي أَخِيرًا».
طُوبَى لِمَنْ يَنْتَظِرُ وَيَبْلُغُ إِلَى الأَلْفِ وَالثَّلاَثِ مِئَةٍ وَالْخَمْسَةِ وَالثَّلاَثِينَ يَوْمًا.
فَتُشْتَرَى الْحُقُولُ فِي هذِهِ الأَرْضِ الَّتِي تَقُولُونَ إِنَّهَا خَرِبَةٌ بِلاَ إِنْسَانٍ وَبِلاَ حَيَوَانٍ، وَقَدْ دُفِعَتْ لِيَدِ الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ.
