وَأَمَّا هِيرُودُسُ فَلَمَّا رَأَى يَسُوعَ فَرِحَ جِدًّا، لأَنَّهُ كَانَ يُرِيدُ مِنْ زَمَانٍ طَوِيل أَنْ يَرَاهُ، لِسَمَاعِهِ عَنْهُ أَشْيَاءَ كَثِيرَةً، وَتَرَجَّى أَنْ يَرَي آيَةً تُصْنَعُ مِنْهُ.

فَسَمِعَ هِيرُودُسُ الْمَلِكُ، لأَنَّ اسْمَهُ صَارَ مَشْهُورًا. وَقَالَ:«إِنَّ يُوحَنَّا الْمَعْمَدَانَ قَامَ مِنَ الأَمْوَاتِ وَلِذلِكَ تُعْمَلُ بِهِ الْقُوَّاتُ».
فِي ذلِكَ الْوَقْتِ سَمِعَ هِيرُودُسُ رَئِيسُ الرُّبْعِ خَبَرَ يَسُوعَ،
قَائِلاً:«أَعْطِيَانِي أَنَا أَيْضًا هذَا السُّلْطَانَ، حَتَّى أَيُّ مَنْ وَضَعْتُ عَلَيْهِ يَدَيَّ يَقْبَلُ الرُّوحَ الْقُدُسَ».
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ:«عَلَى كُلِّ حَال تَقُولُونَ لِي هذَا الْمَثَلَ: أَيُّهَا الطَّبِيبُ اشْفِ نَفْسَكَ! كَمْ سَمِعْنَا أَنَّهُ جَرَى فِي كَفْرِنَاحُومَ، فَافْعَلْ ذلِكَ هُنَا أَيْضًا فِي وَطَنِكَ»
فَغَضِبَ نُعْمَانُ وَمَضَى وَقَالَ: «هُوَذَا قُلْتُ إِنَّهُ يَخْرُجُ إِلَيَّ، وَيَقِفُ وَيَدْعُو بِاسْمِ الرَّبِّ إِلهِهِ، وَيُرَدِّدُ يَدَهُ فَوْقَ الْمَوْضِعِ فَيَشْفِي الأَبْرَصَ.
