The law for the sabbatical and jubilee years brings to a close the laws given to Moses by Jehovah upon Mount Sinai. This is shown by the words of the heading (Lev 25:1), which point back to Exo 34:32, and bind together into an inward unity the whole round of laws that Moses received from God upon the mountain, and then gradually announced to the people. The same words are repeated, not only in Lev 7:38 at the close of the laws of sacrifice, but also at Lev 26:46, at the close of the promises and threats which follow the law for the sabbatical and jubilee years, and lastly, at Lev 27:34, after the supplementary law concerning vows. The institution of the jubilee years corresponds to the institution of the day of atonement (ch. 16). Just as all the sins and uncleannesses of the whole congregation, which had remained unatoned for and uncleansed in the course of the year, were to be wiped away by the all-embracing expiation of the yearly recurring day of atonement, and an undisturbed relation to be restored between Jehovah and His people; so, by the appointment of the year of jubilee, the disturbance and confusion of the divinely appointed relations, which had been introduced in the course of time through the inconstancy of all human or earthly things, were to be removed by the appointment of the year of jubilee, and the kingdom of Israel to be brought back to its original condition. The next chapter (ch. 26) bears the same relation to the giving of the law upon Sinai as Exo 23:20-33 to the covenant rights in Ex 20:22-23:19.
افتح المصدر ↗We have here the laws concerning servitude, designed to preserve the honour of the Jewish nation as a free people, and rescued by a divine power out of the house of bondage, into the glorious liberty of God's sons, his first-born. Now the law is, I. That a native Israelite should never be made a bondman for perpetuity. If he was sold for debt, or for a crime, by the house of judgment, he was to serve but six years, and to go out the seventh; this was appointed, Exo 21:2. But if he sold himself through extreme poverty, having nothing at all left him to preserve his life, and if it was to one of his own nation that he sold himself, in such a case it is here provided, 1. That he should not serve as a bond-servant (Lev 25:39), nor be sold with the sale of a bondman (Lev 25:42); that is, "it must not be looked upon that his master that bought him had as absolute a property in him as in a captive taken in war, that might be used, sold, and bequeathed, at pleasure, as much as a man's cattle; no, he shall serve thee as a hired servant, whom the master has the use of only, but not a despotic power over." And the reason is, They are my servants, Lev 25:42. God does not make his servants slaves, and therefore their brethren must not. God had redeemed them out of Egypt, and therefore they must never be exposed to sale as bondmen. The apostle applies this spiritually (Co1 7:23), You are bought with a price, be not the servants of men, that is, "of the lusts of men, no, nor of your own lusts;" for, having become the servants of God, we must not let sin reign in our mortal bodies, Rom 6:12, Rom 6:22. 2. إِذَا اشْتَرَيْتَ عَبْدًا عِبْرَانِيًّا، فَسِتَّ سِنِينَ يَخْدِمُ، وَفِي السَّابِعَةِ يَخْرُجُ حُرًّا مَجَّانًا.
وَأَمَّا بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ فَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ سُلَيْمَانُ مِنْهُمْ عَبِيدًا لأَنَّهُمْ رِجَالُ الْقِتَالِ وَخُدَّامُهُ وَأُمَرَاؤُهُ وَثَوَالِثُهُ وَرُؤَسَاءُ مَرْكَبَاتِهِ وَفُرْسَانُهُ.
وَالآنَ لَحْمُنَا كَلَحْمِ إِخْوَتِنَا وَبَنُونَا كَبَنِيهِمْ، وَهَا نَحْنُ نُخْضِعُ بَنِينَا وَبَنَاتِنَا عَبِيدًا، وَيُوجَدُ مِنْ بَنَاتِنَا مُسْتَعْبَدَاتٌ، وَلَيْسَ شَيْءٌ فِي طَاقَةِ يَدِنَا، وَحُقُولُنَا وَكُرُومُنَا لِلآخَرِينَ».
وَصَرَخَتْ إِلَى أَلِيشَعَ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ نِسَاءِ بَنِي الأَنْبِيَاءِ قَائِلَةً: «إِنَّ عَبْدَكَ زَوْجِي قَدْ مَاتَ، وَأَنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ عَبْدَكَ كَانَ يَخَافُ الرَّبَّ. فَأَتَى الْمُرَابِي لِيَأْخُذَ وَلَدَيَّ لَهُ عَبْدَيْنِ».
وَتَسْتَمْلِكُونَهُمْ لأَبْنَائِكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِكُمْ مِيرَاثَ مُلْكٍ. تَسْتَعْبِدُونَهُمْ إِلَى الدَّهْرِ. وَأَمَّا إِخْوَتُكُمْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ فَلاَ يَتَسَلَّطْ إِنْسَانٌ عَلَى أَخِيهِ بِعُنْفٍ.
وَيَكُونُ فِي ذلِكَ الْيَوْمِ، يَقُولُ رَبُّ الْجُنُودِ، أَنِّي أَكْسِرُ نِيرَهُ عَنْ عُنُقِكَ، وَأَقْطَعُ رُبُطَكَ، وَلاَ يَسْتَعْبِدُهُ بَعْدُ الْغُرَبَاءُ،
وَمَرَّرُوا حَيَاتَهُمْ بِعُبُودِيَّةٍ قَاسِيَةٍ فِي الطِّينِ وَاللِّبْنِ وَفِي كُلِّ عَمَل فِي الْحَقْلِ. كُلِّ عَمَلِهِمِ الَّذِي عَمِلُوهُ بِوَاسِطَتِهِمْ عُنْفًا.
لأَنَّهُ قَدِ اسْتَعْبَدَهُمْ أَيْضًا أُمَمٌ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمُلُوكٌ عِظَامٌ، فَأُجَازِيهِمْ حَسَبَ أَعْمَالِهِمْ وَحَسَبَ عَمَلِ أَيَادِيهِمْ».
فِي نِهَايَةِ سَبْعِ سِنِينَ تُطْلِقُونَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ أَخَاهُ الْعِبْرَانِيَّ الَّذِي بِيعَ لَكَ وَخَدَمَكَ سِتَّ سِنِينَ، فَتُطْلِقُهُ حُرًّا مِنْ عِنْدِكَ. وَلكِنْ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ آبَاؤُكُمْ لِي وَلاَ أَمَالُوا أُذُنَهُمْ.
فَتَخْدِمُهُ كُلُّ الشُّعُوبِ، وَابْنَهُ وَابْنَ ابْنِهِ، حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ وَقْتُ أَرْضِهِ أَيْضًا، فَتَسْتَخْدِمُهُ شُعُوبٌ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمُلُوكٌ عِظَامٌ.
