Babylon shall by no means escape punishment. Even though it mounted up to heaven (cf. Job 20:6; there may, at the same time, be an allusion to Isa 14:12, and possibly also to the tower at Babylon), and תּבצּר, "cut off (i.e., made inaccessible) the height of its strength," i.e., the height in which its strength consists, its lofty wall of defence (probably an allusion to the lofty walls of Babylon; see on Jer 51:58), yet destroyers are to come against it from Jahveh.

He is very copious and lively in describing the foresight God had given him of it, for the encouragement of the pious captives, whose deliverance depended upon it and was to be the result of it. Here is, I. The record of Babylon's doom, with the particulars of it, intermixed with the grounds of God's controversy with her, many aggravations of her fall, and great encouragements given thence to the Israel of God, that suffered such hard things by her (v. 1-58). II. The representation and ratification of this by the throwing of a copy of this prophecy into the river Euphrates (Jer 51:59-64).

هأَنَذَا عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا الْجَبَلُ الْمُهْلِكُ، يَقُولُ الرَّبُّ، الْمُهْلِكُ كُلَّ الأَرْضِ، فَأَمُدُّ يَدِي عَلَيْكَ وَأُدَحْرِجُكَ عَنِ الصُّخُورِ، وَأَجْعَلُكَ جَبَلاً مُحْرَقًا،
وَأَجَابَ الْمَلِكُ فَقَالَ: «أَلَيْسَتْ هذِهِ بَابِلَ الْعَظِيمَةَ الَّتِي بَنَيْتُهَا لِبَيْتِ الْمُلْكِ بِقُوَّةِ اقْتِدَارِي، وَلِجَلاَلِ مَجْدِي؟»
سُنُّوا السِّهَامَ. أَعِدُّوا الأَتْرَاسَ. قَدْ أَيْقَظَ الرَّبُّ رُوحَ مُلُوكِ مَادِي، لأَنَّ قَصْدَهُ عَلَى بَابِلَ أَنْ يُهْلِكَهَا. لأَنَّهُ نَقْمَةُ الرَّبِّ، نَقْمَةُ هَيْكَلِهِ.
لِذلِكَ اسْمَعُوا مَشُورَةَ الرَّبِّ الَّتِي قَضَى بِهَا عَلَى بَابِلَ، وَأَفْكَارَهُ الَّتِي افْتَكَرَ بِهَا عَلَى أَرْضِ الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ: إِنَّ صِغَارَ الْغَنَمِ تَسْحَبُهُمْ. إِنَّهُ يَخْرِبُ مَسْكَنَهُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ.
«قَدْ أَنْهَضْتُهُ مِنَ الشَّمَالِ فَأَتَى. مِنْ مَشْرِقِ الشَّمْسِ يَدْعُو بِاسْمِي. يَأْتِي عَلَى الْوُلاَةِ كَمَا عَلَى الْمِلاَطِ، وَكَخَزَّافٍ يَدُوسُ الطِّينَ.
فَتَحَ الرَّبُّ خِزَانَتَهُ، وَأَخْرَجَ آلاَتِ رِجْزِهِ، لأَنَّ لِلسَّيِّدِ رَبِّ الْجُنُودِ عَمَلاً فِي أَرْضِ الْكَلْدَانِيِّينَ.
هأَنَذَا أُهَيِّجُ عَلَيْهِمِ الْمَادِيِّينَ الَّذِينَ لاَ يَعْتَدُّونَ بِالْفِضَّةِ، وَلاَ يُسَرُّونَ بِالذَّهَبِ،
«اِصْعَدْ عَلَى أَرْضِ مِرَاثَايِمَ. عَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى سُكَّانِ فَقُودَ. اخْرِبْ وَحَرِّمْ وَرَاءَهُمْ، يَقُولُ الرَّبُّ، وَافْعَلْ حَسَبَ كُلِّ مَا أَمَرْتُكَ بِهِ.
