وَظَهَرَ الرَّبُّ لأَبْرَامَ وَقَالَ: «لِنَسْلِكَ أُعْطِي هذِهِ الأَرْضَ». فَبَنَى هُنَاكَ مَذْبَحًا لِلرَّبِّ الَّذِي ظَهَرَ لَهُ.

Here in Sichem Jehovah appeared to him, and assured him of the possession of the land of Canaan for his descendants. The assurance was made by means of an appearance of Jehovah, as a sign that this land was henceforth to be the scene of the manifestation of Jehovah. Abram understood this, "and there builded he an altar to Jehovah, who appeared to him," to make the soil which was hallowed by the appearance of God a place for the worship of the God who appeared to him.

وَأُعْطِي لَكَ وَلِنَسْلِكَ مِنْ بَعْدِكَ أَرْضَ غُرْبَتِكَ، كُلَّ أَرْضِ كَنْعَانَ مُلْكًا أَبَدِيًّا. وَأَكُونُ إِلهَهُمْ».
وَلَمَّا كَانَ أَبْرَامُ ابْنَ تِسْعٍ وَتِسْعِينَ سَنَةً ظَهَرَ الرَّبُّ لأَبْرَامَ وَقَالَ لَهُ: «أَنَا اللهُ الْقَدِيرُ. سِرْ أَمَامِي وَكُنْ كَامِلاً،
لأَنَّ جَمِيعَ الأَرْضِ الَّتِي أَنْتَ تَرَى لَكَ أُعْطِيهَا وَلِنَسْلِكَ إِلَى الأَبَدِ.
وَظَهَرَ لَهُ الرَّبُّ عِنْدَ بَلُّوطَاتِ مَمْرَا وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي بَابِ الْخَيْمَةِ وَقْتَ حَرِّ النَّهَارِ،
وَأَمَّا الْمَوَاعِيدُ فَقِيلَتْ فِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَفِي نَسْلِهِ. لاَ يَقُولُ:«وَفِي الأَنْسَالِ» كَأَنَّهُ عَنْ كَثِيرِينَ، بَلْ كَأَنَّهُ عَنْ وَاحِدٍ:«وَفِي نَسْلِكَ» الَّذِي هُوَ الْمَسِيحُ.
إِلَى مَكَانِ الْمَذْبَحِ الَّذِي عَمِلَهُ هُنَاكَ أَوَّلاً. وَدَعَا هُنَاكَ أَبْرَامُ بِاسْمِ الرَّبِّ.
فَنَقَلَ أَبْرَامُ خِيَامَهُ وَأَتَى وَأَقَامَ عِنْدَ بَلُّوطَاتِ مَمْرَا الَّتِي فِي حَبْرُونَ، وَبَنَى هُنَاكَ مَذْبَحًا لِلرَّبِّ.
فَبَنَى هُنَاكَ مَذْبَحًا وَدَعَا بِاسْمِ الرَّبِّ. وَنَصَبَ هُنَاكَ خَيْمَتَهُ، وَحَفَرَ هُنَاكَ عَبِيدُ إِسْحَاقَ بِئْرًا.
وَقَالَ الرَّبُّ لِمُوسَى: «اذْهَبِ اصْعَدْ مِنْ هُنَا أَنْتَ وَالشَّعْبُ الَّذِي أَصْعَدْتَهُ مِنْ أَرْضِ مِصْرَ إِلَى الأَرْضِ الَّتِي حَلَفْتُ لإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ قَائِلاً: لِنَسْلِكَ أُعْطِيهَا.
فَدَعَا يَعْقُوبُ اسْمَ الْمَكَانِ «فَنِيئِيلَ» قَائِلاً: «لأَنِّي نَظَرْتُ اللهَ وَجْهًا لِوَجْهٍ، وَنُجِّيَتْ نَفْسِي».
