وَلَمَّا انْتَهَوْا مِنْ تَقْرِيبِ الْمُحْرَقَةِ قَالَ يَاهُو لِلسُّعَاةِ وَالثَّوَالِثِ: «ادْخُلُوا اضْرِبُوهُمْ. لاَ يَخْرُجْ أَحَدٌ». فَضَرَبُوهُمْ بِحَدِّ السَّيْفِ، وَطَرَحَهُمُ السُّعَاةُ وَالثَّوَالِثُ. وَسَارُوا إِلَى مَدِينَةِ بَيْتِ الْبَعْلِ،

כּכלּתו: when he (the sacrificing priest, not Jehu) had finished the burnt-offering (the singular suffix ו may also be taken as indefinite, when one had finished, vid., Ewald, 294, b.), Jehu commanded the runners and aides-de-camp: Come and smite them (the worshippers of Baal), without one coming out (escaping); whereupon they smote them with the edge of the sword, i.e., slew them unsparingly. ויּשׁליכוּ: and the runners and aides-de-camp threw (those who had been slain) away, and went into the citadel of the temple of Baal. בּית־הבּעל עיר cannot be the city of the temple of Baal, i.e., that part of the city in which the temple of Baal stood, for the runners were already in the court of the temple of Baal; but it is no doubt the temple-citadel, the true temple-house (עיר from עוּר, locus circumseptus) - templum Baalis magnifice exstructum instar arcis alicujus (Seb. Schm.).

Ahab's idolatry: his zeal against this he took Jonadab to be witness to (Kg2 10:15, Kg2 10:16), summoned all the worshippers of Baal to attend (Kg2 10:18-23) and slew them all (Kg2 10:24, Kg2 10:25), and then abolished that idolatry (Kg2 10:26-28). II. A short account of the administration of his government. 1. The old idolatry of Israel, the worship of the calves, was retained (Kg2 10:29-31). 2. This brought God's judgments upon them by Hazael, with which his reign concludes (Kg2 10:32-36).

The temple of Baal in Samaria contained a sacred altar to Baal and an Asherah pole that Jehu’s men destroyed. Josiah’s later purge of Baal worship in Judah similarly involved burning and demolishing the Asherah pole in the Temple in Jerusalem (23:6).
