Before the servant had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.

What it means

Look at the very first phrase: "Before the servant had finished praying..." The prayer is still on his lips. He hasn't said "amen" yet. And there she is — Rebekah, walking out with her water jar. That timing is the whole point of the verse. Moses (the traditional author) wants you to feel how fast heaven answered.

Back up one verse and you'll see the servant — Abraham's senior household manager, sent on a mission to find a wife for Isaac — had just laid out a very specific test: the girl who offers water both to me and to my camels, she's the one (Genesis 24:14). Before he can even finish asking, the answer walks up.

Then the verse slows down to give you her family tree, and it matters: daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor. In one line you're told she is Abraham's great-niece. She's inside the family God has been working with. Not a Canaanite (which Abraham had forbidden in verse 3), but kin. The genealogy isn't filler — it's the servant (and you) checking the box: this one belongs to the covenant family.

Notice what's not said: she's not described as beautiful yet (that comes in verse 16), and nobody has spoken to her. The narrator is letting providence do its work quietly before anyone realizes what's happening.

Christians don't really split over the meaning of this verse, but they do split over what it teaches about guidance. Some traditions (more Reformed) read this as a one-off, special-revelation moment for the covenant line — don't expect God to answer your prayers like a vending machine. Others (more charismatic) read it as a pattern: God still answers specific prayers with specific signs. Both sides agree on the basic point: God was listening the whole time.

Historical Context

The events here happen somewhere around 2000–1900 BC, in the world of the early patriarchs — Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. The story was written down later (traditionally by Moses around 1400 BC; many modern scholars push it to the time of Israel's monarchy or after). Either way, the original audience was Israelites who needed to know how their family began.

Picture the scene: Abraham is living in Canaan (modern-day Israel/Palestine), but he sends his servant about 500 miles northeast, to the region of Aram-Naharaim — what we'd now call northern Syria/southeastern Turkey, near the city of Haran. That's where Abraham's brother Nahor had settled. So this is a long, dangerous, expensive trip — camels, gold, an armed retinue. You don't send your top servant that far for nothing.

Why not just find Isaac a local girl? Because the local girls were Canaanite. Abraham had seen Canaanite religion up close — it involved fertility cults, child sacrifice to gods like Molech, sacred prostitution. Marrying into that world meant absorbing it. The covenant family had to stay distinct.

About wells: in this culture, a well outside town was the social hub. Women came out at evening with jars on their shoulders (not their heads — the shoulder-carry is a Mesopotamian detail) to draw water for the household. It was also, frankly, where you went to meet a future spouse — Jacob meets Rachel at a well (Genesis 29:9-10), Moses meets Zipporah at a well (Exodus 2:15-17). The original readers would have smiled knowingly: of course it happens at a well.

And the camels matter. A thirsty camel drinks 20-30 gallons. Watering ten of them is hours of brutal labor. The servant's test wasn't asking for politeness — it was asking for extraordinary, sacrificial kindness.

Original Language

וַֽיְהִי־הוּא טֶרֶם כִּלָּה לְדַבֵּר (vayhi-hu terem killah ledabber) — "And it happened, before he had finished speaking." The little word טֶרֶם (terem), "not yet / before," is doing heavy lifting. It's the Hebrew way of saying: the prayer wasn't even out of his mouth. This same word shows up in Isaiah 65:24 — "Before they call, I will answer" — and it's hard not to hear the echo.

הִנֵּה (hinneh) — usually translated "behold." Modern English Bibles often drop it or soften it to "look." But hinneh is a finger pointing at the page: Look! Right here! Watch this! The narrator is grabbing your sleeve.

יֹצֵאת (yotse't) — "coming out," a participle. It's not past tense, it's ongoing — she is in the very act of walking out as he is in the very act of praying. The two actions overlap. Hebrew grammar is showing you the timing.

כַּדָּהּ עַל־שִׁכְמָהּ (kaddah ʿal-shikhmah) — "her jar on her shoulder." A kad was a clay water jar, heavy when full. The phrase paints an ordinary working girl, not a princess in a palace. Providence walks in dusty sandals carrying a clay pot.

Application

Stop and let this sink in: before he had finished praying. While he was still mid-sentence, God's answer was already walking down the path with a water jar.

You probably pray as if God is far away — as if your prayers have to travel up through layers of atmosphere, get processed, queued, considered. This verse says something else. The answer was already in motion before the request was finished. Rebekah didn't get up that evening because the servant prayed; she got up because that was her evening chore. God had been weaving her steps and his steps together for years to bring them to that well at that hour.

Here's the uncomfortable part. If you really believed God was working ahead of your prayers like that, your prayer life would not look the way it does. You wouldn't pray as a last resort. You wouldn't pray vaguely. You wouldn't pray and then immediately start scrambling to fix things yourself as if heaven were running behind.

The servant prayed something specific and risky: let it be the one who waters my camels. He named the test. He put his neck out. That's the cost this verse asks of you: stop praying foggy, deniable prayers — "Lord, bless my day," "Lord, be with so-and-so." Pray something you'd be embarrassed to be wrong about. Pray something where, if God doesn't show up, you'll have to admit it.

And then watch. Because the God of Genesis 24 is still the God who answers before you finish asking. Rebekah is already walking. You just haven't looked up yet.
